i'm thankful my kids weren't here. news 4 today starts now. good morning, everybody. it is 6 a.m. i'm aaron gilchrist. >> i'm erika gonzalez in for eun yang. we have team coverage on the devastating tornadoes in indiana. >> the storms wiped out homes and businesses in a neighborhood that was severe damage by a twister just two years ago. >> we begin with kristin wright at the live desk. >> not a good morning in indiana today. the video we have coming in here to the newsroom, you must see. there was a starbucks in kokomo that was absolutely just leveled. take a look here. never seen a starbucks quite like this. we know everyone inside this coffee shop was able to get out safely. this is about 40 miles or so from indianapolis. byme

confirmed. at least three touching down. fast-moving storms here. middle of the afternoon. roofs just ripped off homes and buildings. governor pence who is also the gop vice-presidential nominee is expected to survey the damage there today and incredibly nobody was hurt. welcome news. we had unofficial reports, winds as much as 160 miles per hour on the border. here's radar from the time of the storm yesterday. here's indianapolis just south of here. 40 mile north, that's where kokomo, indiana is. a lot of dramatic video coming in this morning. these storms progressed farther off to the east and eventually brought a little severe weather to western parts of ohio yesterday, late last night.

for us, today, we had a clear sky out there. it's a mild and dry start to the day today. the severe weather is going to stay well to our north. we won't worry about that. however, there will be a chance for a shower or thunderstorm primarily north and west of the metro area for today. of course, haguerstown, martinsburg, that's where the rain chances are for today. staying dry for this evening. good weather for the nationals game. plus the redskins forecast coming up in a few more minutes. turning now into a busy morning with first 4 traffic. chopper 4 just got over this scene in rockville, darnstown road at key west avenue. part of that intersection is blocked here this morning. a warning for you if you are headed through 28 this morning. big problem here, 66 inbound at 29 centerville. you can see we have two lanes blocked h

four-mile backup because of that crash this morning. beltway looking quite good. nice and green. no problems on the inner or outer loop. the metro delays on the orange, blew, and silver lines at eastern market. travel times are coming up in a few minutes. drama for metro continues today as the transit agency's board prepares to meet. federal authorities are calling for more training and oversight after finding that train cars could easily roll away. megan mcgrath is live with more on the investigation and what's next, megan? >> reporter: more questions today about metro's culture of safety. the federal transportation administration releasing a report that says metro workers are not doing simple thing to prevent trains from rolling away after they are parked at the rail yards. the i

widespread failure to secure both rail cars and maintenance vehicles in those yards. there are three roll away incidents in two years. one of those incidents, there was some damage but no injuries. now, the problem, workers are not putting on hand brakes when storing trains and other vehicles in those rail yards. i spoke to one rider this morning. he says that metro has a ways to go to improve safety but he does think things are getting better. there's always room for improvement. you can definitely tell. i've been riding metro for two years, you can definitely see an improvement since i first started. >> reporter: another rider, though, says he does not feel safe. in fact, he says that he believes metro should pay him to ride the rails every day. now, this all comes as metro's board is getting ready to gather later this morning for a special meeting. they are going to get an update on the latest on the investigation into last month's derailment. that meeting scheduled

back to you all in the studio. >> megan, thank you. today, we expect a court appearance that could reveal new details about a death investigation in burtonsville, they are looking for suspects in the murder of syed ha soon. these two are facing charges and they will be in court this morning facing drug charges qeked to this case. an attempted sex assault investigation is under way in loudoun county. this happened on the washington and old dominion trail. the victim says she was walking on the trail around 8:30 last wednesday night when two men approached her. they pulled at her and her clothing before physically assaulting her. we told the suspects left after a bicyclist rode by. anyone who knows anything is asked to call the allow down's -- loudoun county sheriffs offices. what would happen if a

helicopter crashed at the pentagon? it's a scary thought. there is a drill happening on the north side of the pentagon grounds. just know it is a drill. it should be rapid up by mid afternoon news 4 has learn d.c.'s fire chief is about to announce a major shake-up in command. that includes some of the highest-ranking department officials. sources tell us that chief gregory dean will reassign two of his deputy chiefs, moving them away from day-to-day operations and replacing them. the head of the d.c. firefighters union and ed smith will be promoted to battalion chief. chief dean and the mayor have been looking to improve the image of the department. the changes are expected to be announced early next month. theth

after we found out about that huge earthquake in italy. 247 people have died and the damage is just incredible. three towns, accumoli, arquata del tronto are in rubble right now. many more are missing. at this hour, recovery crews are using dogs to try and find any other bodies. people across that country also dealing with the aftershocks. another big story developing overseas. the american university of afghanistan is closed until further notice after an attack. two men opened fire on the campus in kabul yesterday. we learned this morning both gunmen were killed. we also found out 13 other people died, including 7 students and three police officers.

county. news 4 learned of past investigations that found issues with the program. a 2013 letter listed several nonkplienses. and inaccurately files were kept on personnel. >> you are not allowed to have any deficiencies. last week, the federal government strip the county of its head start grant money. five board members of the board of education are calling for the board chair and vice chair to step down. nearly 6,400 students in prince george's county are missing out on the first week of school. that is because they are students that have not been immunized or haven't proven that they have been vaccinated. according to policy, they have to stay home from school until they get that done and the deadline was the first day of school which was tuesday. >> there are about 6,300, that does not mea

>> reporter: 911, the fire truck disappeared. sebastian weaver is sad. he has fond memories of playing here. >> the fire truck was like a unique thing to kids. i would play on it with friends. play random games. pretend the fire truck was another vehicle. it was so much fun. >> reporter: and now it's gone? >> gone. >> reporter: this is walter pierce park it's like a disney world for kids in adam morgan. the big attraction, this kid friendly fire engine. a few days ago that fire truck disappeared. somebody even put a picture of it on a milk container. it led to an official police investigation of what they described as a first degree theft. now, neighbors say the fire truck had a hole in it and tape around it to keep kids away.

rain chances are highest through future weather as we get into the late morning, we could have a few stray showers along i-85 from winchester to martinsburg to hagerstown there. with time as those showers come farther and farther to the east, they should be drying up with time. rain chances in and around the city today are under 20%. so just know that there's a little chance but you probably could get away without the umbrella. eyes on the tropics still, hurricane gaston here in the open olympic should weaken back to tropical storm and this area of disturbed weather here, should it take on a name, it would be named hermine, we will be watching it carefully because it's proximity to south florida and gulf of mexico next week. temperatures 90 or higher tomorrow and into the weekend. i'll be back in a few more minutes to help you plan out the next ten days. breaking news still on the road this morning. eastbound 66 at 29. a five-mile backup as you are

so much to do for those who are able to carve out a little bit of time to come out here. look behind me here, now that the sun is up. you can see they are starting to get things in place for a week long event. there are events over the next seven days. this morning from 7:00 to 8:00, you can have lattes with lincoln north of the memorial on henry bacon drive. several events planned for the kids, including a scavenger hunt. tonight, 5:00, live music, a comedy show and a beer garden but one of the biggest events kicks off in a few hours at 8:00. the park service says they will assemble over a thousand people on the mall to create a living version of the iconic emblem, the arrowhead. >> we ve

hundreds of people here we understand with all of the damage and all of the power outages. there is a dire need for a safe place to be. this is video we have coming in of all the damage there. just look at that. homes, roofs blown off homes. trees down. this is central indiana, the city of kokomo, about 40 miles or so from indianapolis. by some accounts, eight tornadoes confirmed. at least three touching down. fast-moving storms. we're talking about in the middle of the afternoon. we want you to listen here to some of the folks staying at that shelter. they are quite emotional. >> the police came to our property and told us we had to leave. everybody had to leave. >> all we have is all our clothes and we've been out in the soaking rain all day, i want them to know their dad is okay. >> that's the thing. people may have lost material things, but as far as we know, no one seriously hurt by

the earthquake struck in central italy middle of the night. magnitude 6.2. the death toll right now, 247 people. but there are others who are still missing. how many, we just don't know. it is hard to say. three towns less than 100 miles from rome reduced to basically nothing p. and then the aftershocks. so now the race to find survivors. thank you so very much. louisiana governor john bell edwards says residents trying to recover from those devastating floods will be able to get those grants to make their homes habitable. they will allow people to live inside while making repairs. people's whose homes have more extensive damage, mobile homes are available and the registration for those programs start monday. officials say it is an

tornado that tore through cokoko yesterday. >> winds reached up to 160 miles per hour. carrie cline has more from the sight of a starbucks that was leveled. >> reporter: certainly a very devastating here in parts kokomo. we have power out to thousands of people. we have people who have lost their homes and businesses completely leveled. this is one of those businesses. i'm going to step out of the way so you can see it. right here, what you are looking at is a story of survival and her rowism. when that tornado touched down here in kokomo yesterday, it knocked this building down within seconds and unbelievably there were customers and employees inside who all walked out alive. as you see here, it's starting to rain. the wind is starting to blow again, which is really adding insult to injury for those trying to clean up. but if you look in the back part

of the starbucks here. you see where the building is still standing, that is where those inside were quickly ushered. it's really a right case place at the right time. they rode out the storm and able to survive. also a tale of her rowism a couple of construction workers saw the whole thing happen. they were able to run over after the tornado blew through when these employees and customers were trapped inside the bathroom, they were able to literally dig them out and bring them out to safety. it's going to be a day of clean-up as many people are trying to put the pieces of their lives back together again. >> carrie cline for us in indiana. montgomery county police are still looking for suspects in the death of syed hassan, he was shot in side a
