people use it early in the morning or in the evening and unfortunately at those times the w and od can get a little isolated. there have been two attempted attack along this trail in the last week, and the most recent incident involved an off duty sheriffs deputy. take a look at this man, this composite sketch. police say that the sheriffs deputy was taking her daily run yesterday around 6:30 in the morning when this man approached her with a box cutter. she recognized the weapon and was able to turn around and run away, and that happened in the leesburg area. wednesday, a woman was walking a trail in the sterling area when two men came out of the woods and grabbed at her clothing. suspects ran away when a cyclist rode by. residents are going to continue to use the trail but they are going to take some precautions.

a woman was stranded in new zealand. the 20 mile hike was only supposed to take three days. they became lost because trail markers were buried in the slow. her partner fell down a steep slope and died. she spent several days in the cold and found an abandoned hut and broke inside. >> i was walking in snow, because of marks were correct. >> now, when she was found, she was suffering from frostbite, hypothermia and a few other minor injuries. even with the excitement of back-to-school, there are a lot of things to think about and one of those is the possibility of your student getting scammed. news 4 consumer reporter susan hogan explains what to watch out for. >> you've heard of irs scams.

this latest scam though targets students about bogus federal student tax. there's no such thing, but scammers imperson nating the irs or someone from the state revenue department try to convince students otherwise. the scam demands the student wire money immediately. if the victim hesitates, the scammer threatens to report to police, revoke the victim's driver license. it's important the irs will never call and demand immediate payment over the phone. the irs will make you a -- mail you a bill. it will never threaten to immediately bring in police or have you arrested. it will never require you to use a specific payment method to pay for taxes and it will never ask for credit or debit card information over the phone. you can report these scams, open up nbc washington app and search student tax scam to find the link. montgomery county students also head back to class o

we've got some breaking news overnight out of italy. another 60 aftershocks struck the country, including one this morning that measured 4.8 on the richter scale. the quakes are just adding to the devastation that started days ago. nbc's bill nealey is in the town of amatrice with the latest numbers including new death toll. >> good morning. it's day three and really desperate efforts here to find survivors. it is still officially a mission to rescue rather than recover bodies, but it is a race against time. the temperatures here around 100 degrees and anyone still trapped in the rubble would have real problems especially with dehydration but they are still desperately digging, still calling for silence. listening in the rubble for any signs of life, but it is around 36 hours now since the last survivor was pulled out. the death

climbing. it's now 267. 200 from this small town of amatrice alone. around 400 people still injured in hospital and many, many people are still missing. people here are sleeping outside overnight. there is a camp with tents. the main one can hold around 300 people, but there are houses homeless here. thousands of people who will not be able to move back into some of the buildings. this is actually an elementary school. if the earthquake had struck when children were in here, i mean, dozens if not hundreds would have died. it happened, of course, at 20 to 4 in the morning. today, there is officially a state of emergency in italy declared in this area, declared by the italian prime minister. tomorrow, there will be a state funeral. the first of the funerals and it will be held in a couple
