days, a pedestrian has been struck on richmond highway. but in the springfield area, something new aimed at helping pedestrians get safely across the street. bureau chief julie carey is here at the high-tech crosswalk. >> reporter: we've seen these crosswalks before but this is the very first one to be installed in fairfax county. those who pushed hard for it are hoping that it will bring new safety, especially for the parents and the kids who live in the apartments because for the first time they'll have a safe way to get across roads to the elementary on the other side. with the flip of a switch, this new electronic crossing was ready for a test walk. the

six branchs of the usda that were closed down after the fda received anonymous threats. this includes the research center in beltsville as well as in colorado, north carolina and two branches in west virginia. the usda received messages last night and raised concerns about the safety of usda personnel and facilities in a letter to staff today officials told employees to report anything suspicious. the fbi is investigating to see if the threats are credible. a day after dozens of people at virginia tech received threatening e-mails, police did not elaborate but say they contained what they called a threat to campus safety. classes still went on yesterday as planned. today, someone at william and mary received a threat. in 2007, a

this is the one that may be a problem. this is tropical depression number nine to the west of the florida peninsula here and it has winds about 35 miles per hour. there's the center of circulation but it looks like it will become a tropical storm and may become hermine by tomorrow morning or tomorrow midday and this is the latest track by thursday, 1:00 a.m., still well off the coast. this is thursday by 2:00 p.m., the latest track has it just south of the florida panhandle. it's good that they are getting the skins game in a day early in tampa because it's going to be staying well to the west of there during the game on wednesday. but then it tracks along the coast. this is the latest track as a tropical storm and then stays right along the coast just off the outer banks and curves off to sea. there is an indication that it could be close to our atlantic beaches over the holiday weekend to keep a chance of maybe some showers on saturday and sunday. mainly south and east of the metro area. the good news is, lower
