the sound of summer at fisherman's crab deck, just over the bay bridge. come this weekend, labor day crowds will pack every table in this charming eastern shore eatery. to get here, they'll navigate bumper-to-bumper traffic on route 50 and equally clogged back roads. >> i go to the grocery store and it takes me about 45 minutes to get home. i live right here in chester, maryland and it's pretty harsh. >> reporter: the governor cited studies that claim 14-mile backups could become a regular occurrence within two decades. >> nobody else has ever done it, and people have been drying out for it and we're making the process to get started. >> reporter: the bay bridge changed life when it opened in 1952 and began carrying an endless stream of cars headed

the maryland and delaware beaches. some hope the new bridge might be placed a little further away. >> my question was, is that going to cut down on ocean city traffic? because coming through here, i live here, and ocean city traffic is backed up on the back roads. >> reporter: others are concerned about the cost. >> figuring out ho pay for it is a big thing going forward. it would certainly help a lot here. >> reporter: no word on where the new bridge would be built. jackie bensen, news4. back to you. >> jackie, thank you. so just how bad is traffic on the bay bridge? the transportation authority tells us almost 26 million drivers crossed it in fiscal year terrorist. that's 1500 vehicles per lane every hour. the east bound span of the bridge was built first. it opened in 1952 and took 2 1/2 years to build. the west bound span opened i

1973 after four years of construction. there is no timetable for a new bridge. the study governor hogan announced today, just the study, will take four years to complete. this could affect your holiday beach weekend plans. hurricane season in full swing and forecasters have their eyes on three storms. in hawaii, the big island has canceled all schools tomorrow and thursday, as it braces for hurricane madelyne. florida and north carolina could both get a brush of wild weather. gabe gutierrez reports tonight. >> reporter: tonight, the view from the international space station is stunning. massive hurricanes swirling across the globe. hurricane madelyne in the pacific threatening hawaii, followed by hurricane lester and hurricane gaston. now florida and the carolina coast are bracing. >> this storm is an uncertainty. >> reporter: in florida,

forecast to turn towards the gulf coast, bringing rain and isolated tornadoes over the next few days. >> everybody has to be careful. we don't want anybody to be injured or any loss of life. >> reporter: tropical depression 8 is grazing north carolina's outer banks where a tropical storm warning is in effect. the concern here, rip currents, water that moves away from shore and swimmers are pulled out to sea. >> rip currents are dangerous. they've taken three lives just this past summer. there's a high threat of them right now. >> reporter: payton waller got caught up in one but escaped. >> it was really rough. >> reporter: other tourists are taking the offshore storm in stride. >> i mean, one to three inches. back home this is what you call a thunderstorm. >> reporter: though neither of the storms closest to the u.s. are expected to strengthen into a major hurricane, it's become a busy season in the

strength or the category, because the water hazards might be the most dangerous. >> let's get the latest track on those atlantic storms from chief meteorologist doug. >> doug, the newest information comes out at 11:00. >> we just got the update. both systems are still tropical depressions. kind of surprised, because tropical depression number 9 that will affect our region or just off the coast, really starting to look like a tropical storm. i would not be surprised if this was a tropical storm by the time you wake up tomorrow. here's tropical depression number 8 just off the coast of the carolinas. this one is moving out to sea. no problem there. the one we're looking at is tropical depression number 9. here's miami and jacksonville. 35-mile-an-hour winds it's just meandering down here. wind speed, up to 70 miles per hour, just shy of a ic

started as a heartbreaking cross country move. the skelly family moved to arlington from seattle. along the way, they lost their 14-year-old cat in michigan. new tonight, shomari stone explains how the cat got to its new home. >> it's miracle. >> reporter: 8-year-old conrad and his brother thank god that their cat is back home. milky ran away when he was traveling across country last sunday. they were driving in a moving truck from seattle, washington to arlington. they took a break in new buffalo, michigan, when milky ran into the woods after a dog scared him. what's going through your mind, milky runs away? >> oh, my gosh, it is so heartbreaking. >> reporter: they searched for two hours and didn't find him.

we've got a repeat tomorrow, almost exactly. a high of 91 degrees today in d.c. 91 out towards dulles, 90 in fredericksburg. we have tied for the highest number of 90 degree days in the month of august and tomorrow we may beat that record. temperatures out there right now, quite nice. seeing these warm days and cooler nights, 79 degrees right now in the city. most everywhere else, in the 70s. so a nice night and great start to wednesday. no rain to talk about. i don't think we'll see any chance of rain until the day on thursday. satellite and radar showing what we're tracking. you can see that cold front towards illinois and indiana. that's going to bring showers on thursday. then we have tropical depression number 8 spinning, tropical depression number 9. let's start with 8, because it's close to us. not going

as a matter of fact, it is expected to become a tropical storm but move out to sea and not going to have any impact on our shoreline except for a rip current threat. tropical depression 9, very surprised this is not upgraded to a tropical storm. still winds of 35 miles per hour, but i would think this is going to be a tropical storm by tomorrow morning when you wake up. here at 7:00, it is expected to be a 50-mile-an-hour tropical storm. national hurricane center brings it to 70 miles per hour when it makes landfall, coming on shore to the south of tallahassee. i would not be surprised to see this shifting off to the west, meaning it could be closer to our coastline. some of the computer models bring it back to the northeast. so this is going to be an interesting scenario over the next couple of days. if you're going down towards the beaches this sunday, you
