back now at 8:46 with pink power today as we address breast cancer, 1 in 8 women will develop the disease during her lifetime. joan lunden is a survivor and author of "had i known." good morning. >> good morning. 40% of women you at greater risk of getting cancer. surpriingly millions of women don't know if they have it or what tests should be done if they do. ever since i battled breast cancer and found out i had dense breast tissue which can mask a tumor, i make sure all my friends who have dense breasts to get thoroughly checked.
8:47 am
>> no. it want two or three years ago i started hearing the term "dense breasts," it was from you? >> sure enough you found out you have dense breasts. >> why don't doctors tell you that? >> i guess that's the $64,000 question. >> a question that demands an answer. i recently attended an fda hearing in washington, d.c. to request when women across the country receive their mammogram dense breasts. >> i had a clean mammogram in 2014 and then had an ultrasound and found out i had cancer. >> what about the other women who never hear the results they have very dense tissue and might need another test? this could save their lives. had i known earlier this kind of life saving information wasn't being passed on to me and to other women, i would have been here knocking at your door a
8:48 am
i'll keep knocking because for women with very dense breast, getting additional test is critical. this is what fatty breast tissue looks like that can detect a tumor. dense breast tissue is white and makes finding a tumor is like looking for something in an a snowstorm. >> i will take you to the radiology lab where they found a tumor and you will get a radio an ultrasound. >> let's go! >> while a mammogram is good for looking for a tumor, it may not be able to find everything. >> the more whitish you have the more difficult it is to spot small tumors which show up as white spots. >> is this me? >> you could see you have a lot
8:49 am
mammogram, dense tissue. >> reporter: each year, she gets a report stating ther mammogram is normal. >> millions of women in this country get what we determine is the happy gram. from what we see, there are no changes and you don't have cancer. >> i get it every year. >> and usually, it's that first line and goes into the waste basketball and you do, breasts but they are not required to flag that information or do more tests. alyce lives in new york and one of many states that require some information about breast density and its risks. >> do women really need to be their own advocate and say, hey, doc, that test i got, do i have dense breasts? >> i think women definitely need to be their own advocates.
8:50 am
information at hand. >> the "today" is proposing amendments to the mammogram quality standards to report dense breast reporting. >> what about women like alyce and me as to reporting? >> it would include a whole breast ultrasound, screening or i covered by insurance but they are painless and for alyce, provide peace of mind. >> hi. >> you all done? >> all finished. >> tell me everything is good. >> everything is perfect. >> we've known each other for 30 years and we have 30 more because we know what we're doing. >> very much a relief. >> all right, kiddo. >> it is important for women to understand the results of their mammograms and know their breast density like we know our blood

this week on "today food," we're all about kitchen tools you cannot live without. bobby flay is here with the start of his special series, "chopped beef." the tool you cannot live without? >> cast iron pan. >> why? >> love them. they don't cost a lot and can last generations. it gives you lots of good sear on whatever >> let's talk aboutcornbread, traditional, wet then dry? >> you have wet and milk and butter and this is wet ingredients. i have dry ingredients, cornmeal, a little bit of flour baking, some baing powder and a little bit of salt and sugar. put it all in.
8:54 am
together until it forms a batter. >> you don't want to mix it too much? >> you don't want to mix it too much. i will take my cast iron pan. this is key, that i warmed up in the oven, made it really hot. i will take a little bit of butter and brush the butter right on top of the pan and take that batter and pour that right into the -- yeah, right into the hot skillet. what's going to happen is you will get this really nice crust on the outside of the cornbread texture. >> looks like this over here, which is beautiful. >> 18 minutes. >> you have cornbread and make another recipe for me. you go that way and i go this way. >> you call it dressing because it's alongside -- >> i will cook it back in the cast iron pan. if you want to make stuffing,
8:55 am
these the thanksgiving vegetables, carrots, celery, onion, put a little garlic in there, and those are chrimini mushrooms but any kind works well. i will add eggs to this and herbs, fresh thyme, oregano and parsley and we add the cornbread. this is the cornbread we had the day before. really important is you let the cornbread stale so it dries out. otherwise it's too moist. we pour this into our vegetables and make up the flavor profile for the dressing. one of the most important ingredients in any thanksgiving meal is chicken broth. we need a lot of it because it will drink up the cornbread. the cornbread soaks up a lot of the broth. once you think you have enough, add more. >> this goes what?
8:56 am
this in the oven 40 minutes. you can see how crusty it gets, that's the cast iron doing its job. >> turkey or chicken, sauce on the side. thank you. for these recipes and to sign up for our today food club, sign up. we're back after these messages. 8:56 is your time now on this wednesday, october 19th. good morning. we will check in with melissa mollet. hi. >> just fine here, a live look at montgomery avenue and still have a slowdown at parkway at belle view boulevard.

had a little anxiety and trepidation about it because the subject matter was rather intense and certainly an out of the box type of character for me to be involved with, something i had never really done before. then i realized, wait, i'm an actor. the joy of -- one of the lines in the film, it's fun to play with who we are. as an actor, that is certainly something i get the opportunity to do. i get to try favorite character? >> yeah. one i have really probably the fondest memories of is "pump the volume" when i was the radio d.j. there he is. >> there he is. >> mark hunter. >> after that, everyone had christian slater posters. >> very nice. >> the hair and everything. >> i look exactly -- there i am. fantastic. >> oh!
