app. a chain reaction crash in the district leave as woman dead and a lot of questions after a driver tries to run from the crash scene. news4's darcy spencer is live at police headquarters in northwest. darcy, what are you learning tonight. >> reporter: this was a horribly violent crash. tonight we are learning good samaritans rushed in to try to help those who were hurt. police say the driver of this northeast dc when he struck several cars, went airborne, then landed upside down. >> it was in the air and he just -- when the car crashed they pulled him out of the car. he had cuts and stuff on his face. >> reporter:ist still police say i ran from the crash. but he was caught not far away. they say he hit this suv head on then rear-ended this white car. the woman who was driving it had

there were several victims, including two children, all expected to be okay. >> it was quite a tragedy out here. >> reporter: this man, who did not want to be identified said he and others helped some of the victims get out of their cars. >> it wasn't just myself. it was with the help of the other tenants around here and the other people we sprung into action trying to get things resolved. >> reporter: police charged the driver with leaving the scene of an accident. have you ever come upon an accident this bad? >> no, those who saw the crash scene and pulled over to find out more. >> when you leave home you have to pray and ask god that you get back home safe. you know, that's all you can do. >> reporter: now, so far, police have not identified the driver of that striking car, but they do tell me he'll likely face additional charges. we're live in northwest. darcy spencer, news4. we are working to learn the name of the elderly man that was

firefighters were up against when they got to the home in oxen hill. flames shooting through the roof and thick black smoke pouring out from the building. an elderly woman got out safely but a man in his 80s died inside the home. fire investigators are still trying to figure out how it all started. residents of the lynnhill apartments in temple hills are relieved to have their power back on we are working to learn if the gas has been restored as well. the condo association owes more than a a million dollars in utility bills and the utilities were cut off last week. the mayor ordered the utilities be turned back on immediately. people got their power back friday not. the condo association says a management company misused the hoa fees and didn't pay the utility bills. next, it is the countdown to

samaritan who tried to help a little girl who had been hit by a car this evening has died. first responders say he had a heart attack. the 8-year-old girl that he tried to help is now in the hospital. we're told that she has serious injuries. police say a car hit her on shillm place in northeast d skrrks. we're working to get more details on the story. we'll have them for you as they

and alcohol in his system when his boat crashed into a miami beach jetty that according to the toxicology reports released today. the miami marlins pitcher and two friends died in last monday's crash. fernandez had a blood alcohol level way above the legal limit. it's unclear who was steering the boat at the time of the crash. two shows at new york's famed metropolitan opera today. somebody sprinkled as me powdery substance into the orchestra hit during intermissions during afternoon performance. nobody was hurt. business police are looking for the person responsible. they did talk to witnesses who say there was a man there from out of town who told them he went there to sprinkle ashes of a friend and mentor during the performance. police are looking into that. the met is making arrangements to allow ticket holders to attend other shows.

annual marine corps marathon. good luck runners. it will be marathon number 100, if you can believe that, for a local woman. as derrick ward reports, for brook curran, the race is about much more than just crossing that finish line. >> reporter: brook has run on all seven continents, marathons, iron man competitions. inspired after the 9/11 attack she made a bucket list. now -- i'm not stopping. >> reporter: this marine corps marathon is special. it will be her 100th marathon. >> ironic. the better i got the less it meant to me to where i would train four or five mobtsd and feel nothing at the finish line. >> reporter: one day she found another reason to run, found out off the course in the eyes of a young mother with a child. >> you could see the weight of the world in her eyes. i must have been staring at her.
