ready, set, race. i'm jim hanley at the 41st marine corps marathon. the runners are off. we have live, team coverage at the start line. >> i'm julie carey at the key bridge. from age 13 to 85, thousands of runners have one goal in mind. i'm david culver at hanes point. we have every angle covered. >> i'm angie goff. from the stories that motivate the journeys. >> to the major traffic impact. i'm adam tuss. we have a special edition of news4 today starting now. news4 today begins with breaking news. >> but first, before the marathon coverage in the 10:00 hour, we continue to follow breaking news out of prince george's county. that is where two people have

whoever is responsible. >> shots were fired into a crowd on walker hill road in capitol heights. derrick ward is live at the scene with the very latest on the ongoing investigation. hi, derrick. >> reporter: good morning again, we're again live here in the 6800 block of walker mill road and capitol heights. police now, hours after the shooting was reported have started to clear the scene from where it all happened. people who heard this, this is an apartment complex and sort of a parking lot area. they heard gunfire. possibly auto mattive gunfire. what is known is when the police got there, along with the fire and ems, six were found to have been shot. two of those people have died. four remain hospitalized. we don't have any information about the conditions. no identities on the suspects nor any look outs for a suspect or suspects. police are interviewing witnesses and i'm told that all

>> it is tragic. it is unacceptable. and it is horrifying all in one. to have a live -- life taken of a young man out here. it is just unspeakable. >> the investigation continues. a third vehicle, two vehicles were towed out of here an hour ago. a few minutes ago, another vehicle with the windows shot out was taken away. all part of the evidence into the investigation. this shooting, six people hit, two pe derrick ward, news4, back to you. >> terrible, thank you so much. there has been another fatal fire, unfortunately we have to report, in prince george's county as well. one person died at this hour in landover. three others were injured after flames broke out at this house. the conditions of the other people people are still unknown. at 10:02, we also want to turn our attention to the

only getting warmer, right, snom. >> this afternoon may be having near record heat here in the metro area. right now, though, still comfortable and a great day to get out and get in a brisk walk or maybe a run or a hike. maybe biking along the path. temperatures hovering in the 60s. by 2:00 we'll be in the upper 70s and more sunshine this afternoon. actually hovering around 80 degrees by 3 or 4:00, back to u we'll be dropping dramatically overnight. we'll look at that over the next ten days during this half hour. >> thank you very much. the 41st marine corps marathon is under way right now. 28,000 runners are making their way through the 26.2 mile race. it is going to end at the marine corps memorial. >> you're looking at a live picture of the finish line. this is where we're expecting the first runners to cross in a

>> the first 10k male runner has just crossed the finish line, in fact. >> we want to get to news4 jim hanley. he has been doing this year after year. he knows how to do it right and he has an amazing story with the runners. you know how to get them right when they cross. you don't let them take a break. >> hey, we got him. we got our first, first place winner right here, captain jeffrey mills of virginia. representing the marines out here, doing them proud. you have run this 10k before and you said you were feeling the heat today like no other time. >> yeah, the temperatures it has been up and down the last few weeks. we had consistent temperatures, 50s and 60s and that is typical of virginia weather for you. it went up and down, up and down. i felt today. i can't speak for anyone else, i asked them to throw water on me to cool me down. >> while you were running. >> i didn't drink any. throw it on the face and on the body. it was better than drinking it. >> what does it mean to

corps? >> it means a lot. the marines stand for good things. they stand for what is right and best for our country. i'm proud to be a part itself and come out here and win this. didn't expect it. proud to be a part of it. >> are you hungry? load up last night on food. >> did not load up at all. i had been eating less and less because i didn't want to, i didn't want to have a full stomach this morning. i'm going to pig out after this. eat a was going to be different for the first time. how did it affect you? >> i was not prepared for kinds of inclines they had in arlington. i didn't know you had streets that went up as far as they do. it affected me a little bit but challenging and challenging is a good thing. it is a good course. i enjoyed it. >> congratulations to you. well done. >> we'll be right back shortly with the first female hand crank winner and the marathon winner,

1-2. the indians are now up 3 games to one. >> cubs fans are pretty upset right now. the tribe is close, everybody, cleveland could finish off the cubbies with a win in the world series tonight. cleveland beat the cubs last night 7-2 putting them up 3-1 in the series. game five gets under way tonight at 8:15. we have this other story developing out of the district.

little girl killed him. d.c. fire saying the man suffered a heart attack as he tried to prevent the 8-year-old from being hit by a car in northeast d.c. the girl ended up being hit by that driver and taken to the hospital. we know at this point she does have some serious injuries. the driver who caused this deadly chain reaction crash in northeast d.c. is expected to face additional charges, we learned and police say he actually fled the scene. d.c. police saying the man was e when his vehicle hit an suv head on, rear ended another car, look at the damage it did. one of the cars ended up flipping over. the woman in the rear ended car died. four other adults and child were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. time right now is 10:09 on this sunday morning. let's head out to the marine corps marathon. this is mile 11 where david

front coming in. it is triggering some showers far north and west of us up into ohio and northwestern pennsylvania. that is going to be getting closer to us by later this afternoon, but we don't have any around now. you can track it when you'll be out later this evening with the nbc washington app. you can see the storm team4 radar. i have the hour by hour timing on that rain. that is coming up in a few minutes. >> all right, tom, thank you very much. well, a lot of people are out there right now running in the >> david culver is live at mile 11 with a glimpse into the excitement that continues to build. david? >> reporter: hey, angie and adam. a lot of excitement. the runners are making their way down mile 11 into 12 as they make their round across. this is the beautiful and scenic portion. it is also a somber one at some parts, really further back here and not much more than half mile

beyond that, these faces. identify want to show you these faces. the faces of the fallen. this is the wear blue section of the race. it is to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. you can see on so many faces of all those that have lost their lives this year alone. it is a point in the race where they need motivation and inspiration and that is what you get as you walk past, run past those faces and take it in. we caught up with martha andre goya. they're parents of corporate mark gochla. he lost his life in the line of duty in 2011. i want to hear what they had to say about why it was so important for them to be out here. >> we were just so proud of our daughter for running again. she works very hard and it is heart warming. >> i'm just -- it is just an

the ultimate sacrifice and that is what enables all of us to live our life free. >> corporate goya's sister is running this race. his dad who you just saw ran it is a couple of years ago. when he got to that point, the wear blue section, having lost his son, he of runners do that. that is where they really want to put themselves in the moment and be present and aware of why they're running this race. it is pretty powerful to see and inspirational as they kind of make the round and have a little bit more than halfway to go. >> thank you very much. we want to check in on the finish line because this is the, what we believe is the first finisher of the actual marathon

of course, our jim hanley is standing by waiting to wrangle in the winner as he does every single year and does a great job of that. we believe that this is the person here who is coming in for the finish line to win the race, to win the marine corps marathon this morning and of course, we'll check back in with jim in a second. >> it is a lonely mile right there. >> is it? i would be doing cartwheels much show boating to >> that is what i'm saying. the first guy clearly has a solid lead. >> when the race started, 994 people ran the marathon. men. and now we have thousands, so this guy crossing over the 535,000 to cross first. >> there would be no end to my show boating. >> absolutely not.

marathon day. that much harder, by the way running a marathon is hard enough. run a marathon when it is above the 65 or 70 degrees, and you're heating up, you know, 50s is what marathon runners love. 50 degree weather. >> who knew you were a marathon man. >> i had no idea i was either. >> i stop at about, hey, 10, 12 miles a week is enough for me. >> a week. >> can i a mike pence in here today. i never saw the security beefed up. >> couldn't go to the bathroom. >> that is what happens. it is a good interview. it is worth it. marathon is over. we have our winners. that is perfect timing. now you know. >> ten minutes. >> now you know, come over, we have a lot to talk about. e-mails, you'll hear where governor pence is, but two things of interest is the trump campaign sort of struggling now

as the clinton campaign and talking with them. they want more transparency from comey but there is material, perhaps that they control. should they one up the fbi and have huma abedin who is the central figure here, should she release all of her e-mails. interesting way that both campaigns are trying to feel their way around this story. >> so, i mean, we're nine days out. i have a feeling this will go longer >> i mean, who knows. >> we have donald trump and you spoke to pence about this, jumping on this. do they feel like this is going to help them make head way in the battleground states? >> it was interesting with governor pence, he was insistent that they had momentum before this. that they, he doesn't like -- it was clear he was not comfortable with the fact that this was saving the campaign. and whether that was because, and it does seem as if the

radar showing showers and thunder showers. all dry here now but they will be arriving here this evening ahead of a cool front. they will begin to move into the shenandoah valley around 6:00 to 7 pk out in the mountains getting closer to the metro area around 9 this evening and a rumble of thunder and brief downpour by then. after that, we dry out and temperatures will be plummeting from near 80 this afternoon all the way down to the low 50s by dawn on monday with a b blustery wind and wind settles down during the afternoon. temperatures around 60 degrees on monday afternoon and chilly during the evening hours for trick or treaters it will be chilly and dry monday evening. temperatures in the 50s and by dawn on tuesday, the mid-40s, tuesday afternoon into the mid-60s and partly sunny, remaining dry then wednesday as we warm back up again. here we go into november with unusually warm weather. mid-70s wednesday. maybe near 80 degrees near

i won two years ago. i came here to do the best. >> did you beat your best last time from 2014? >> i don't know the time yet, but i didn't go for time. i went for the win. >> there are rumors floating around that it could be a course record. we'll have to wait to verify that. everybody has been talking about the heat and at times you might be slower. >> it was perfect for me. >> i like it like that. i train in 90, 98 plus humidity. i'm used to it. i wanted it to be like this today. >> we had to pull you off of the massage table. >> i just wanted to loosen up my muscles. the last 200 was hectic. i got it, but i wanted to loosen myself. >> hectic but you made it look easy. congratulations to you, we appreciate it. >> thank you so much. >> there you have it.

it is going to jump up later today. will quickly jump into the 70s in another couple hours and hit near 80 degrees by mid afternoon, the record is 82 set back in 1996 for october 30th. it can get toasty in late october but it is certainly well above the average high for this time of the year. >> wow, from the weather to the pavement. we're breaking records everywhere. >> how are we looking for trick or treaters? >> looks good in the 50s for trick or treating monday evening and partly cloudy, looks nice. >>
