new york hilton with reaction from the trump campaign. >> and jim hanley will be live with clinton supporters here is a look at how both teams are preparing. >> i'm jim hanley in midtown manhattan on the hudson river where hillary clinton hopes to make history 12 hours from now when her supporters and volunteers start to trickle in here and fill this hall and the numbers across the country come in. she hopes this will be a big victory party. the hall they've done countless run throughs. the stage is lit up like the country, the united states of america just surrounds the stage. the lighting has been tested. there are supposed to be big name acts outside on a separate stage. music, live concert performances, the original plan was to have fireworks above this glass ceiling. there was talk that the coast guard may have had a problem with it.

win the presidency, one candidate must secure 270 electoral votes. right now, nbc news electoral battleground map is tipping in hillary clinton's map at 274. that means donald trump needs flip a blue state red to win. if you're headed to the polls in virginia, the polls open at 6:00 a.m. they close at 7:00 p.m. at the polling place. if you forget your id. you can vote with a provisional ballot but you'll have to send a copy to the electoral board by monday, november 14th in order for your vote to count. we're closely watching the race in virginia's tenth congressional district. luann bennett is running against barbara comstock. comstock spent monday talking to

bus stops. bennett campaigned with well known democrats including gold star father khan. vice presidential candidate tim kaine and sandy hoyer. a potential game changer is on the ballot in fairfax county. we're talking about the 4% meals tax. it is a proposal that would raise how much it would cost you to eat out. the meal tax will generate $100 million each year. much of that will go to schools. opponents argue that changing more or charging more for and unfairly affect low and middle income families. if you're voting in maryland today, the polls will open at 7:00 this morning. they will stay open until 8:00 tonight. if you're a first time voter, bring identification with you because election workers may ask for it. accepted ids include driver's license, student id, passport or utility bill. it is the first time in 30 years

mikulski's name. chris van hollen is hoping to take the retiring senator's seat. he goes head to head with kathy szeliga who currently serves in the house of delegates. you can head to polls in d.c. at 7:00 this morning. the election sites will stay open until 8:00 tonight. no photo id is required to vote and d.c. does have same day registration. you will need to prove you live in d.c. in order to register and vote. a is on the ballot and there are three council seats up for grabs. this is a reminder to keep an eye out for any irregularities. look for things such as really long lines, broken machines or someone being denied the right to vote. if you see any of these issues, contact a news4 i-team voter patrol tip line. that number is on your screen.

she arrived back in new york, westchester county early this morning. she didn't make any comments. she walked the rope line after a late night final rally in north carolina which has become a pivotal state for the democrats trying to win this election. >> tracie, we know that donald trump won't be too far away with his supporters here in midtown, manhattan. can you tell us about the event he has planned? >> yeah, he is going to be at the hilton on 6th which is only a couple of miles away two presidential candidates in town, security is very tight. the nypd says they have thousands of officers out. not only securing the center here, this is the building with the big, glass ceiling they talked about. the hilton for the trump campaign, they're expecting that there could be protests in the city. they say that they're prepared for that. this erz working with secret service, counter terrorism and of course, keep in mind, they're trying to protect the 1,000 polling places in this city.

recreational use is on the ballot in five states. the states are california, arizona, nevada, massachusetts, and maine. the proposed law would allow someone to own up to six plants for personal use and people over 21 would be able to buy up to an ounce of marijuana. in maine, voters will be asked to legalize up to two and a half ounces. they estimate it could bring in more than a billion dollars in tax revenue alone in california. battle ground virginia has election and that is where tim kaine wraps up his stop on the campaign trail. our northern virginia bureau chief julie carey spoke to kaine. >> reporter: it is a homecoming for vice presidential candidate tim kaine as he hold his rallies in fairfax and richmond. he took time to answer a few questions. >> i yield the floor to the gentleman of virginia, the next

it that addition to visit the grave. the cemetery is expecting an over throw of people because this is the first election where a woman could be elected president. visitors often leave i voted stickers and messages near the grave stone. the cemetery will stay open late this year. as a new president is chosen today, many voters are praying for peace and unity after the results. news4 was at saint columbus church in northwest last night where concerned voters gathered to pray. some of the people we spoke to told us that the hateful rhetoric in the presidential race has caused an even deeper divide between democrats and republicans. >> i think that the two candidates have created such adversity and created such anger that i think that the people that are voting for them have had to follow in that camp. >> other people told us that

will represent everyone, not just democrats or republicans. voters who are parents, you might want to turn the voting process into a teachable moment for your kids today. >> here is what you need to know. in d.c., minors are allowed to go with voters. in maryland, voters can take one or two children under the age of 18 with them. in virginia, those kids must be 15 or younger. no matter what, they're not allowed to disrupt the voting procedures. a lot of schools are closed today in different opportunity to take the kids with you today. >> i'm taking mine with me today. >> chuck bell, can you take a dog? >> no. no. no. >> i throw that in the mix and that messes everything up. >> she will sit quietly on the sidewalk. she is voting for milk bones. i'm not sure. >> what kind of weather will we have? >> pretty good weather. the last couple of election cycles it hasn't been pretty.

2008 we had rain with temperatures in the 50s. last time we had sunny election day was 12 years ago in 2004. sunshine and a 71 degree high on that election day. right now, today's forecast looks good. it is cold outside this morning. early voters, layer up. it is in the 30s, but later today it will be a mild afternoon. southwest winds eventually bringing in cloud cover for this evening and these rain chances back out here to the mississippi valley, those rain chances will be not a total wash out of a day, but certainly a day where you will need the umbrella. here is future weather then starting out here early this morning. hardly a cloud to be found until 4 or 5:00 this afternoon. clouds thicken up late tonight into early tomorrow morning. here is now 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. a chance for a little light rain across the i-95 corridor and points north and west. most of the rain chance tomorrow, i think is before lunch time. depending on which computer model you like to look at and this particular one has all of

sterling was killed nearly two months ago. the officer who shot him says sterling intentionally crashed his motorcycle into a police cruiser. some witnesses say it was an accident. d.c. police are still investigating. after a three week defamation trial, a former university of virginia dean has been awarded $3 million in damages. nicole aramo sued the rolling stone magazine over a of her over a story about an alleged gang rape on campus. police found no evidence to back up the story. the article was retracted. rolling stone is facing a $25 million lawsuit from the fraternity where the story was centered. that case is scheduled to go on trial late next year. a virginia man is in jail accused of killing the mother of his six-year-old daughter. prince william county say they have arrested brian yu yesterday.
