trump's camp is remaining optimistic. with polls showing him trailing he is hoping for an upset win. he was in florida, north carolina, pennsylvania and making a stop in new hampshire and again ending his campaign in michigan. take a listen to what he has to say to some of the voters out there yesterday. >> i'm asking you to dream big. because with your vote, we are just hours away from the change entire life. >>. >> reporter: and the ultimate decision, again, is up to the voters. everybody anxiously awaiting for tonight's results and with more protests expected here in new york and outside of trump towers there, is a heightened sense of security all over new york city and again, more police officers, especially at the two places where both donald trump and hillary clinton are planning on hosting the election parties tonight.

heading into election day, hillary clinton is ahead in our final nbc news survey monkey tracking poll. >> she leads donald trump 47 to 41 in a four way race. the political team says clinton has been leading in the polls by at least four points since september. >> let's look at the electoral map here. in order to win the presidency, a candidate must secure 270 electoral votes. right now, nbc news electoral battleground map tipping at 274. donald trump has to win all of the states considered toss ups and flip a blue state red in order to win. in our area, all eyes are on battleground virginia. >> molette green is live in fairfax county with what you need to know before you head to the polls. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you guys. the election workers, they are inside now setting up. we saw them arriving with their coffee, lunch, and some told me, their dinner in hand prepared

the polls open here at 6:00 so nobody is lined up yet. we can tell you that the coral department here at centerville high school, they've set-up a little stash. they'll be selling baked goods to all of the voters who come here today for the choral department to raise money. a couple of things voters need to know before they come out. bring your id. virginia voters must show id at the polling place. if you don't have it, youan don't stay home. you'll just have to vote with a provisional ballot. one of the big races that we are watching, in fact, the entire country keeping an eye on is the tenth district house seat. one of the most competitive in the nation between republican incumbent barbara comstock going for her second term and her democratic challenger luann bennett. comstock did a campaign blitz throughout the district from bus

supermarkets. her challenger luann bennett, a real estate executive, she made final stops with senators tim kaine, mark warner, house sandy hoyer and gold star father khazir khan. we'll be out here throughout the morning, we'll bring you the very latest on election day. back to you. >> thank you. another big item on the ballot today in fairfax county is the proposed meals tax. raise how much it costs you to eat out. county officials say the 4% meal tax will generate $100 million each year. much of that will go to schools. opponents argue that charging more for prepared foods would hurt tourism and unfairly affect low and middle income families. if you're voting in maryland today, the polls will open at 7:00 this morning. they will stay open until 8:00 tonight. if you are a first time voter,

accepted ids include a driver's license, student id, passport or utility bill. chris van hollen is hoping to keep the u.s. senate seat in maryland blue. he is facing off against republican kathy szeliga who currently serves as the minority whip in the house of delegates. democrats out number republicans 2-1. barba barbara mikulsky is retiring. >> there are local races and a referendum on the ballot. news4's kristin wright is live at union station catching up with voters. what do d.c. voters need to know this morning? >> reporter: you know what? voters in d.c. have had some interesting things to think about in our city here. here is what you need to know today in d.c. first, the logistics.

morning and close at 8:00. you don't need a photo id to vote. if you're not registered and you want to vote, it is not too late. d.c. does have same day registration. a lot of places don't have that. but if you do do the same day registration. you need to show proof of residency to do that. so on the ballot today, one of the big things is d.c. state hood. we've been talking about this for a long time. there are also three council seats up for one of them, the once embattled former mayor vince gray is vying for one of them. we spoke to one young woman here at union station a few minutes ago. she lives here in d.c. she is 25 years old. she is excited to vote. here is what she had to say. >> it will feel good because i feel like my voice will be

which decide the presidential race tonight. >> for that, we bring in political analyst john allen from sidewire.com. we appreciate you coming in. we mare about states that can make and break this election. what states should we be watching tonight? >> good morning and it is going to be a long day, but i think florida is the big state to watch early on. if florida goes to hillary clinton, the election is essentially over. there are a couplef places to watch. if donald trump wins florida, watch here in virginia. watch colorado and you're going to want to watch kind of a tie between new hampshire and nevada. that is essentially the clinton fire wall. if she wins virginia, colorado, and either new hampshire or nevada it is very, very difficult for donald trump to win the presidency. on the other hand, if you see donald trump winning new hampshire and nevada or new hampshire and one of the other states and nevada and one of the other states meaning colorado

ready before you head to the polls. but first, a look back at just this past month. >> the last days of the run up to today's presidential election have been littered with bomb shell moments. the first october surprise came on october 1st. the new york times reported that donald trump avoided years of federal taxes after declaring millions in business losses. then on october 7th, the access hollywood tapes came up leading to accusations that trump was a both came fuel for attacks on trump on the second presidential debate two days later. finally on october 28th, the fbi reopened the investigation of hillary clinton after finding e-mails on a laptop used by a close advisor. that case is now closed. today is voting day after a battle ground blitz yesterday, the candidates returned home to cast their vote. the sarah rosario is live with

good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, eun. donald trump is resting up this morning. we do believe he is in new york because we've seen a security detail with lots of cars passing by, all of the lights flashing. his last tweet was at the airport in michigan where he ended his final it was his final stop of his campaign yesterday hitting five states yesterday alone. he tweeted from the airport. we assume he is now back here in new york. michigan is a critical state his last stop. he actually added that on at the 11th hour last night. michigan has voted the past six elections, democratic for the last six presidential elections, it has voted democratic. despite this, trump's campaign is remaining optimistic. it is trailing in the polls right now but they're hoping to pave the way for an upset win barnstorming the battleground states of florida, north carolina and pennsylvania.

the deal, the decision is up to voters. sarah rosario. where will donald trump and his campaign be tonight as the results come in? >> so we know that he is going to be at the hilton midtown. there has been an issue with the credentials about 5,000 credentials were requested so far. only 700 given out. we'll see what happens as the the night goes on. a heightens sense of security especially at the hilton where party tonight. sarah rosario. back to you. >> thanks so much. and everyone wants to know what we'll be waking up to this time tomorrow. >> we have a familiar face to talk about all of the expectations for the election and what happened next. michael fourtnoir is back with us. what can we expect? >> one of the things i think is often over looked is weather.

for people who might otherwise be sort of kept in the house because of the weather, it is not going to be an issue. turn out should be up around the country not just because of the weather but also because of of the excitement that people have regardless of whoever the candidate is. and so when you look at some of the hot pockets in the country, northern virginia for example, the tenth district race between barbara comstock and luann bennett, that turn out will impact who wins those comstock, that bodes well for republicans in virginia. you're going to philadelphia and suburbs, clinton campaign is banking on that to offset what goes on in the rest of the state and also in michigan, similar story with regard to mr. trump, so those kinds of things early, 8:30, 9:00, we'll know what is going to be happening in those states. >> a lot of people want to focus on what happens tomorrow after election day, all the way to

days? >> i think what you will see is a focus on two things. one, beginning to bring the country together for example, for instance, this is a very decisive campaign. and as a result, whoever wins will have to be really significantly focused on trying to bring people together and the other piece of that is appointments whether it is the cabinet or supreme court. the nominee, the winner for show that they're putting people in place that will send a message that this push toward healing is real and not campaign rhetoric. >> so the same question about donald trump. what does he have to do, what role does he have to play before he takes off as if he were to win the election. >> he has a similar focus but a bit more intense in that we don't have questions about secretary clinton's competence.
