second term in congress. >> reporter: it was a hard-fought race for the 10th congressional district here in virginia. congresswoman barbara comstock pulled ahead of her challenger luann bennett to take the seat and continue into her second term now in the congress. now, she came here to speak of her supporters late into the night on tuesday, to thank them for their work. many of the people here saying they weoo the pavement for the congresswoman trying to get people to vote. here's a listen to what the congresswoman said when she addressed her supporters. >> this win is your win. and that we are all in this together in this wonderful district that is the best part of this country and the best part of the commonwealth, the 10th district of virginia, thank you so much. >> reporter: close friends and supporters of the congresswoman tell us beginning today she will

concerned, she listened up and she enjoyed. megan fitzgerald, news4. voters in virginia overwhelmingly approved a ballot initiative helping families of first responders killed in the line of duty. it gives a property tax exemption to their surviving spouses. also, voters in fairfax county decided they did not want to the no votes outweighed the yes votes, 56% to 44%. a similar referendum was shot down in the early 1990s. turning to maryland where the democrat won 62% of the vote, chris van hollen over kathy szeliga.

district seat currently held by democrat donna edwards. brown defeated republican george mcdermott in a large margin. and the most competitive race was in district 6, congressman john delaney fended off republican challenger amie hoeber. back to you. 4:36 now, and the election results were nail-biting to say the least. donald trump is now the president-elect. he left the headquarters in new york city after delivering his acceptance speech just after 3:00 this morning. and that's where we find nbc's sara rosario. what an unexpected outcome for a lot of people. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, eun. i think many people are in shock and put off by the results of this election. a 70-year-old billionaire with no previous government experience pulls off what many people are calling the most

country. and now only time will tell if donald trump will live up to the promises that he made on the campaign trail. and throughout the night, his supporters were very energized, cheering and chanting every time he won another state and electoral vote. his victory wasn't declared until well after midnight. i think it was around 2:48 a.m. if i remember it correctly. when he first took the stage, he first congratulated hillary for a hard-fought race. and over, the work is just beginning. take a listen. >> now it's time for america to bind the wounds of division. we have to get together. to all republicans and democrats and independents across this nation, i say it is time for us to come together as one united people.

>> reporter: we expect to. a campaign official tells us she's going to come out at some point later this morning and speak about what we now know, as of early this morning, is a trump victory. and this is the thing, as we wait to hear from her, what hillary clinton are we going to hear from today? the people who were there at the white house, they were protesting last night and talking about some of the things she brought out in the campaign, about racism, about bigotry, it's unlikely she'll come out firing, so to speak, with those now, she has to step back and acknowledge that donald trump, a man who she said was thoroughly unqualified to be president of the united states, now will be president of the united states. so we certainly wait to hear from her. who we heard from was her campaign chair, john podesta. he came out essentially and told supporters they were still counting votes, every vote counted, and to go home. here's more of what he said. >> i want you to know, i want

way to go before that might become a reality. take a look here, d.c. voters overwhelmingly voted for statehood and referendum b passing with 86% of the vote. it is non-binding and needs congressional approval. with republicans controlling both chambers, that is not likely to happen. and two years after losing his re-election bid for mayor, vincent gr his old seat in ward 7. democrat jim justice is the next governor of west virginia. he beat republican bill cole despite donald trump getting 69% of the vote in that state. justice is a cole executive who distanced himself from hillary clinton during the campaign. and now we'll look at the local ballot questions, voters in montgomery county weighed in on term limits. question b would limit county council members and county

2:30 in the morning when clinton called trump to concede. we'll break down how our area voted for the president. >> reporter: virginia proved to be a much tighter battleground state than a lot of people expected going into last night. hillary clinton is projected to win the state with 48% of the vote there. fewer than 100,000 votes separated her from donald trump in virginia, much of clinton's support came from northern virginia. we're talking counties like

trump found wins locally in stafford, fauquier and spotslvania. clinton is projected to win with 60% of the vote there in montgomery county, prince george's and counties surrounding baltimore as well. trump had 35% from voters in places like st. mary's, with 93% of the district of columbia. and we talk about the balance of power in congress. it's going to the republicans. nbc news is projecting that the republicans have retained control of the house of representatives. the gop has secured 236 seats
