the questions we asked yesterday. and we have a lot of new questions. joining us this morning is political science professor michael fonsworth. this is not what the polls predicted. how could the polls have been so wrong? what happened? >> it's not that the polls were so wrong. the polls will always -- this victory is within the margin of error. we always look at polls and say, okay, somebody is predicted to win the polls, and this result falls right within that. in that regard, the polls weren't wrong, although all of the polls showed secretary clinton with a bit of a lead. and the expectation was that lead would hold and it didn't. >> she left a lot of the key battleground states, many that went for president obama four years ago. >> it's all about blacklash.

that is backlash. many respond to hope better than anger. when you look at race, the economy, gender and class, he cleaned all of those issues in ways that sort of brought out fear and anxiety among voters. you look at the states he won, pennsylvania, ohio, wisconsin, potentially michigan, missouri, for example, even north carolina and florida, those a states that have had significant racial upheavals over the last few years. he played on that. and then you add to that secretary clinton significantly underperforming with white non-college educated voters. >> what does hillary clinton do from here? >> i don't know. you know, she's had a long and distinguished career in public service. and i think she'll continue to play a role in some way. she's done in terms of electoral

the european markets have been up and down. this has been the biggest sell-off since brexit there. the dow was down but it came up after donald trump's victory speech. the peso hit an all-time low amid trump's comments on trade and immigration there. typically they rushed in safehavens of gold during times of uncertainty. this is no exception, we have seen the quellment fears was donald trump's victory speech about 2:50 this morning eastern time. that's when we saw the european markets recover a little bit. we saw the u.s. stock futures not look quite as grim, but still a lot of uncertainty this morning as investors just don't know what a donald trump stance is on trade. that's yet to be seen.
