four-and-a-half hours from now. we'll carry that live. >> now to nbc national correspondent peter alexander has been up all night watching this race unfold and then end. peter, good morning. >> reporter: matt and savannah, good morning. donald trump wrapped up his remarks literally about three hours ago. there was a political earthquake, both seismic and sweeping victory for donald trump. it was a dramatic night. i spoke to sources close to u euphoria, hugs and high-fives as trump and his team watched the tally grow as he ultimately overwhelmed hillary clinton in this race. he really has become the great disrupter, riding a wave of support from white working class voters across large swaths of this country. many people who feel that they have been left behind by the growth following the great recession in this country. donald trump last night in his remarks, donald trump a man who
6:03 am
effectively say "lock her up!" last night to say they urged hillary clinton a debt of gratitude. and he also urged the country to come together. >> now it's time for america to bind the wounds of division. we have to get together. to all republicans and democrats and independents across this nation, i say it is time for us to come together as people. >> reporter: and new this morning, one of donald trump's bios on his twitter account now reads, president-elect. >> all right, peter, thank you. as for the clinton camp, you can only imagine, collective devastation this morning, as we await her concession speech, kristen welker is just outside in democracy plaza.
6:04 am
was posed to make history. instead, she suffered a stinging defeat. one that stunned her supporters and sent shockwaves all across the world. so just recapping what happened last night, thousands of her supporters were gathered at the javits center right here in new york for what they thought was going to be a historic celebration. when it became clear that clinton's path was narrowing, many of her supporters started crying, even leaving before the event was over. her campaign chairman are on, but then moments later secretary clinton conceded to donald trump. we're still awaiting official reaction from the white house. this is clearly also a rebuke of president obama and his legacy. matt and savannah, back to you. >> kristen, thank you very much. we'll turn to another member of our sleepless crew here, chuck todd, who watched the returns come in last night, what has been described as an earthquake. the map turned inside-out. what do you make of it? >> this is rural america, working class whites,
6:05 am
the political establishment. they did it inside the republican party in nominating donald trump. and i think there was obviously a lot of skepticism in the entire political establishment that he could run a campaign like this and win a general election. but this revolution, you can almost call it, certainly a political revolution. look, it is sending -- it was sending a message that, hey, stop ignoring us, stop talking down to us. i think t's that have to look at these results and look at what happened and figure out what happened. >> and not just look at the white house, look at the fact that the republicans in the evening with the white house, the house and the senate. and it's quite the mandate for donald trump. >> he did this without the help of anybody. he did this on his own, which means he goes in there almost unsheckled. >> well, it's going to be interesting what the relationship going forward will be between donald trump and paul ryan, he chastised ryan throughout the course of his
6:06 am
>> we'll see if paul ryan remains speaker of the house, by the way. >> nbc news will have updates all morning long. and we'll have a special edition of "today" coming up. you've been watching the nbc news special report covering this historic election of donald trump in the presidency, to become the 45th president of the united states. eun, it was a night that surprised a lot of people. >> peter alexander said this was a very descriptive way to describe this process. we'll check in with chuck bell now, we are dealing with some rain out there. aaron is dodging the drops, he has the interns holding the umbrella over his head -- just teasing. grab the rain gear. if it's not raining, it will be. 100% chance for rain this

spray going this morning. it could slow down the ride in. and the steady rain is likely for the next hour or two. and we'll see heavier rain showers coming our way later this afternoon. temperatures are going to be stuck in the 50s most of the day. in the low to mid-50s later this morning. watch for bursts of rainfall this afternoon. when does the sunshine come back? and how about the weekend? answers to those questions is coming up in ten minutes. what is going beltway before colesville road. the top of the beltway is pretty red. as you're headed southbound on 95 and getting into the outer loop of the beltway, we are seeing real delays there as well. allow some extra time. the wet roads are not your friend this morning. it is pretty messy everywhere. and eastbound/southwest freeway after ninth street we have a

hillary clinton conceding the election to him just before 3:00 a.m. we want to start things off with a check on the forecast. storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell is talking about a little rain already falling in our area. that's right, eun. it's raining across most of the news4 nation this morning. if you're planning to step outside, i'll give you the red light. steady light rain through the remainder of the morning commute. coming up this afternoon, could get a peek or two of sunshine, but there's also going to be afternoon. then as the rain ends this evening, turning breezy. here's good news for you, sunshine back in the picture for tomorrow. but right now it is raining outside with temperatures in the 50s and temperatures to stay in the 50s all day long. we'll show you the hour-by-hour resolution model coming up. we'll let you know when the next burst of heavy rain comes in. of course, the weekend outlook is just in ten minutes. looking ahead to the weekend for sure. the outer loop of the beltway approaching colesville, we have

messy. we have four miles worth of backups approaching this here this morning. debris is still on the roadway there. as for travel times, take a look at the top of the beltway going 18 miles per hour. we'll see it take you 30 minutes instead of 12. and 66 and 95 are looking pretty typical, especially when you consider the rain. remember to listen to wtop 103.5 f.m. when you hop in your car this guys? melissa, thank you. 6:13 is your time right now. and americans have decided, donald trump is our next president. >> this was a long, hard-fought campaign on both sides. both hillary clinton and donald trump were on the campaign trail for 500 days. >> reporter: we are talking about the peaceful transfer of power, as is tradition in this
6:14 am
election before deciding to concede if that were to be the case. he did not have to make that decision this morning. and in keeping with the democratic tradition, hillary clinton called trump and conceded the election just before 3:00 this morning. both republican leaders in congress also congratulated donald trump and pledged to work with his administration going forward. >> news4's kristin wright is live outside the trump hotel where voters are either rejoicing or grieving over the election results. kristin, good morning, what are morning? >> reporter: hey, good morning, eun. first, i want to show you the security presence outside the trump hotel. we've been watching the guards this morning going back and forth and walking the perimeter of the building. and they do tell me they have an added presence here at the hotel this morning. now we've also had trump supporters out here this morning in the rain as well as hillary clinton supporters. i talked to a woman who was near tears.
6:15 am
was angry, belligerent. talked to another trump supporter who was quite calm this morning. so the range of emotions is really what we're seeing. i talked to a hillary supporter who is basically stunned this morning. and it seem that is the trump supporters are surprised. >> i walked around and talked to a lot of different college up students and asked them, so what are you doing tomorrow? because i don't kno movie out of a "hunger games" series. we have president trump? that's weird. >> donald trump is not going to be a perfect president. but his agenda, for the most part, i believe will move america forward. >> reporter: so those are the feelings that we are seeing out in front of the trump hotel this morning. back to you. >> kristin wright, thank you.
6:16 am
the questions we asked yesterday. and we have a lot of new questions. joining us this morning is political science professor michael fonsworth. this is not what the polls predicted. how could the polls have been so wrong? what happened? >> it's not that the polls were so wrong. the polls will always -- this victory is within the margin of error. we always look at polls and say, okay, somebody is predicted to win the polls, and this result falls right within that. in that regard, the polls weren't wrong, although all of the polls showed secretary clinton with a bit of a lead. and the expectation was that lead would hold and it didn't. >> she left a lot of the key battleground states, many that went for president obama four years ago. >> it's all about blacklash.
6:17 am
that is backlash. many respond to hope better than anger. when you look at race, the economy, gender and class, he cleaned all of those issues in ways that sort of brought out fear and anxiety among voters. you look at the states he won, pennsylvania, ohio, wisconsin, potentially michigan, missouri, for example, even north carolina and florida, those a states that have had significant racial upheavals over the last few years. he played on that. and then you add to that secretary clinton significantly underperforming with white non-college educated voters. >> what does hillary clinton do from here? >> i don't know. you know, she's had a long and distinguished career in public service. and i think she'll continue to play a role in some way. she's done in terms of electoral
6:18 am
know if she has given any real thought to that. because i don't think she thought she would be in this position. >> professor, thank you for joining us. stay with us. and angie goff is joining us now to talk about the social media chatter out there. a lot of people talking about the election, i'm sure. >> they will be for a long time, too. donald trump and hillary clinton yet to address all the people talking about them on social media right now. but this is what just happened. take a look at his donald j. trump change his profile to say president-elect of the united states. notice the cover photo updated as well with the white house behind him along with mike pence. the vice president-elect right there by his side. and hillary clinton, though, a different story. we know in the last couple hours or so she did change her profile pic on her facebook page. but really, the last post was hours before the race was called

happens, thank you for everything. and right now in washington, this is something that is rising. a trend, "people" writing about the first lady, posting about melania trump and wanting to know more about her, seeing a lot of pictures and articles. now with more than 40 million global tweets related to the election, yesterday and more than 7.5 million of you telling the world you voted on facebook, this is definitely a big part of this election and the conversation will continue. now over to you. angie, thank you. we want to check on th bell is here, will it rain all day, chuck? >> it may not rain all day, but it will rain on you two or three different times during the day. the first time is this morning. we have rain drops on the radar. that's the case for the remainder of the morning commute. grab the rain gear. here's radar to show you where the rain is at the steadiest point in time. and this is the first chance for
6:20 am
midday peak of sunshine or two. and this clump of rain showers up in eastern ohio is the next chance of rain that arrives this afternoon. after that, things will clear out tonight and we'll be back to dry weather for tomorrow. here's future weather to plan that out. briefly to moderate rain between 8:00 to 9:00 this morning. then a break in the action, late morning, about 30 lunchtime. the colder air comes in aloft and it has a chance to ring out another round of get rained on this afternoon, there will be some heavier bursts out there. that's the way the day will look and field. temperaturewise, we're in the 50s. we're not going anywhere. you're not going to get out of the 50s today with clouds and showers around. good news is, sunshine back for tomorrow on the blustery side first thing tomorrow morning with temperatures back into the 30s and the 40s. into the upper 50s to near 60 tomorrow afternoon.
6:21 am
is friday. don't forget to thank a veteran. the weekend looks on the chilly side. good morning, melissa. somehow is the traffic on the beltway? the outer loop approaching colesville road, chopper 4 is over the scene here with the rain not helping around town. wet roads are working the windshield wipers. some of it is typical, the rest is in addition to this slowdown outer loop at street, we have a crash on the right shoulder. blue tracking is single laning it. and metro red delays to fort totten due to a malfunction. and 6:21 right now. our coverage of decision 2016 continues. while you were sleeping, protesters were at the white house. we'll tell you about that.

republican congressman barbara comstock will go on to a second term after defeating luann bennett. they fought a competitive race in virginia's 10th district. in maryland, chris van hollen won 62% of the vote over d.c. voters overwhelmingly voted for statehood. it is non-binding and needs congressional approval. and republican donald trump will be the 45th president of these united states. secretary of state hillary clinton called trump to concede just before 3:00 this morning.
6:26 am
chuck says to grab the umbrella before you head out. i can contest to the need for that. we have four things to know about the forecast just ahead. plus, we're getting reaction from around the world on this election of president-elect trump. some people in moscow celebrated his victory. we'll have more on the ripple effect across the globe. this is the victory that the

if you are just joining us this morning, the balance of power just shifted. donald trump won the presidency and the republicans won the senate and house of representatives. from the beginning i always thought it was possible. >> he's our president. >> and you heard it there, he's our president. donald trump is coming to washington. good morning to you, i'm eun yang. >> reporter: and good morning,

park just a few hundred yards from the white house. here's what we know coming out of the election day. president-elect donald trump said he received a phone call from hillary clinton congratulating him on his victory. there's been no public comment from hillary clinton at this point. republicans have held on to their slim senate majority. and the gop will also hold on to the house. we have team coverage of the presidential election ahead, but first we want to talk about the weather. aaron, not only umbrella, but you're bundled up. >> reporter: yes, it's getting colder. right before sunrise it tends to get colder. and the rain has been steadily coming down all morning long. chuck bell is dry and keeping an eye on the forecast this morning. >> aaron gilchrist is paying attention to weather class. he knows the low of the day occurs just before sunrise, and that's in 15 minutes. not that you're going to see it today. we are stuck in the clouds and the rain. if you're waking up to rain drops, it may rain on you two or
6:31 am
and for veterans day. we'll tell you about the cold weekend coming up. the rain drops are making trouble on the roadway. here's melissa. the wet roads are causing problems in the morning. the outer loop at colesville road, chopper 4 still over this problem here on the left side of the roadway. we're seeing a pretty big backup. almost 4 miles now. of course, some of that is very normal for the typical morning commute. but it is really being added on to because of the rain and the crash on the left side of the roadway. allow the extra time there if yoit the rest of the beltway looking okay. remember, all this green is our radar showing you where it's raining almost everywhere right now. allow the extra time. you'll have to work the windshield wipers. eun? both the trump and clinton events went well into the night, but it was early on that we saw reality settle in for clinton supporters as some of the key swing states were projected to go red. >> this election came down to
6:32 am
basically winning every state he needed to in order to get to 270 electoral votes. he pulled out victories in florida, north carolina, ohio and in pennsylvania. hillary clinton entered election day with a modest lead in most of the national polls, but she failed to maintain her narrow advantage in crucial states. she carried traditional democratic strongholds along with the northeast and the west coast, earning her at least 218 ec that trump's victory is the top story around the world today. >> and we're also seeing the newspaper headlines being printed this morning. "the washington post" writes, trump triumph. "the wall street journal" is simple, president trump. and the new york daily news taking a different approach with the headline "house of horrors" over a photo of the white house.
6:33 am
overnight. this one in portland, oregon, that blocked traffic when more than 100 people took to the streets to express their anger at the election's outcome. >> the stock markets worldwide have also been feeling the impact. stock futures plummeted as we waited for the results to come in. the european markets opened low and there are worries about what will happen after the opening bell on wall street. our sister station in new york is joining us this morning with more. rana >> reporter: yeah, eun, investors expected a hillary clinton win. so the prospect of a donald trump presidency brings a lot of uncertainty to cause the u.s. stock futures to plummet overnight. at one point it pointed to the dow dropping as much as 800 points. to give you perspective, the dow has never lost that much during a regular trading session. the asia markets closed in red. japan took the biggest hit with
6:34 am
the european markets have been up and down. this has been the biggest sell-off since brexit there. the dow was down but it came up after donald trump's victory speech. the peso hit an all-time low amid trump's comments on trade and immigration there. typically they rushed in safehavens of gold during times of uncertainty. this is no exception, we have seen the quellment fears was donald trump's victory speech about 2:50 this morning eastern time. that's when we saw the european markets recover a little bit. we saw the u.s. stock futures not look quite as grim, but still a lot of uncertainty this morning as investors just don't know what a donald trump stance is on trade. that's yet to be seen.
6:35 am
not the only thing in play last night. it appears the republicans will hold on to the balance of power in congress. the republicans have retained control of the house. they started the night with 246 seats. as of this morning, the gop is projected to secure 239 seats compared to the democrats' 196. now that number could change once all the results are in. and nbc news is also projecting republicans will have control of the senate as they will maintain control of the senate. the republicans will have 51 seats while democrats hold 45 seats. two seats are held by independents who caucus with democrats. and our live team coverage is just getting started. >> reporter: of course, we are live from the white house this morning. and we have coverage from outside donald trump's new hotel
6:36 am
>> reporter: that's right. trump supporters and clinton supporters outside of the trump hotel in washington this morning talking about whether the country can now unify. and back in studio, i'm angie goff. tracking your trends online, donald trump is a top trend this morning. but also this video continues to rise in 2016 message where he says, no matter what happens, the sun will rise in the morning.

6:40 am
gilchrist live outside the white house this morning. we want to give you a reaction coming in from around the world to the election here. you take a look, reaction to this almost political revolution coming out of russia this morning. president vladimir putin is giving a thumbs-up to president-elect donald trump's victory. elsewhere, a group of americans from democrats abroad simply say they are, quote, shocked at the outcome. much more in just a moment. right now, in terms of storm we'll look at the forecast. thank you, aaron. yes, indeed, the clouds thickened up overnight, and storm team 4 radar at this point is showing rain drops all across the d.c. metropolitan area. this is the case the next couple of hours. the rain gear is required. the raincoats and umbrellas for sure. temperatures are staying in the 50s. the daily grade today is "d-minus." >> i don't like that too much.
6:41 am
we're sending chopper 4 to see what is going on there. we have the problem on the outer loop approaching colesville. we have a crash on the left side. we still have delays we're keeping an eye on this morning. remember, it is wet. allow that extra time. angie? thank you, melissa. i'm angie goff still tracking reaction to the election on social media. and look who just put out their first tweet as president-elect. donald j. trump saying, such a beautiful and important evening. the forgotten man and womanil never before. we're back after this. this is a historic night. the american people have spoken. and the american people have

just about 15 before the hour now, good morning from live outside the white house. we have live team coverage from across the region. >> we are getting reaction from voters outside of trump hotel in d.c. to social media and local races. washington is waking up to news that donald trump will be the 45th president of the united states. and is going to be our next president. he made a victory speech overnight after hillary clinton called to concede the race. that didn't happen until nearly 3:00 this morning. trump won swing states that were predicted to go blue. >> we have not heard yet from hillary clinton's campaign. the last we heard was from chairman john podesta. he told americans to leave what was supposed to be a celebration overnight before she conceded. we expect to hear from her at some point today and will bring that to you.
6:46 am
20th. here's chris lawrence in new york. >> reporter: well, it didn't happen until after 3:00 in the morning, but donald trump has left the building. and he does so as president-elect of the united states. a lot of folks are waking up this morning, maybe surprised to hear that, democrats, people in washington, but not his supporters. they were anxious and had apg zity early on, but florida and pennsylvania that put him over the mark. a lot of people felt his speech was showing passion and was gracious. a lot of people feel more comfortable with the world moving forward with donald trump over hillary clinton. i'm chris lawrence, news4.
6:47 am
manhattan at the javits center. john podesta told supporters to head home, thanked them for their support and said votes on the west coast are still coming in. other states still being counted and out of respect, if he says they don't have anything further to say, he would pass along thanks from hillary clinton. but also added she's not done yet. a out to the end. some are ready to move on, but others need time to get over this stunning surprise tonight. in manhattan, jim handly. mixed emotions for voters now depending on who you were supporting in this election. we want to go to news4's kristin wright who has been outside the trump hotel here in d.c. and
6:48 am
there? >> reporter: you know what? it really depends on who you ask, aaron. we have seen plenty of people come by, a couple joggers, ome walkers. we also met many who are happy and some in tears. they are stunned, surprised, they believe that trump winning the election takes our country back. so as you said, aaron, a lot of mixed emotions in front of the trump hotel. >> i think donald trump was incredibly magnanimous tonight. and he wants to be the president for all americans. it will be difficult for some people. and i feel for some people on the other side.
6:49 am
>> i mean, my reaction is the reaction of any supporters. anyone who cared about the issues is devastated and upset. for me personally, i think did she was going to win. and i was shocked that america could turn the other way. >> reporter: there is extra security outside the trump hotel this morning. in the district of back to you. and the most competitive of our races was in virginia's 10th district, barbara comstock defeated luann bennett to win a second term in congress. comstock thanked her supporters yesterday.

his family watched the results roll in. they joined him last night at trump headquarters. sarah rosario was there tracking the historic moment. >> reporter: many people here in new york, the donald trump supporters are very glad, but overall many people are shocked by the results of the election. donald trump, a 70-year-old billionaire with no previous government experience, pulling out a win for this presidential race. he will become the 45th in his acceptance speech, he congratulated hillary clinton for a hard-fought race and commending her efforts. but he said while the campaign is over, the work is just beginning. he made several promises to the american voters and the people saying he would create jobs and strengthen the economy and would lower taxes.
6:52 am
view as important. and many hillary clinton supporters left in tears just moments before trump was predicted the winner of the presidential race. tracie potts is live in new york city. we're hearing that secretary clinton will speak this morning? >> reporter: right, aaron. we just don't know when yet, but her campaign says, her campaign official says she will come out to say something this morning. she didn't last night. she sent out john supporters should wait until the last vote is counted, as they should wait at that point because everything wasn't settled. a few hours everything was settled. and what is devastating for them is that some of the victories they fought so hard for, including pennsylvania and wisconsin, donald trump was able to win. so there is a lot of questioning going on about the polls that

blue states. >> thank you, tracie. and we just heard from donald trump president-elect on twitter. but now supporters of hillary clinton, they are patiently waiting to hear her response. what we're streaming across the social platforms are images like this, shock, disbelief, devastation. and this is a story well. let us know how you're reacting #nbcnews4. aaron is contending with some rain and some cold. so this doesn't look good for our weather. >> he can take it. we'll take rain here on wednesday morning. we have not seen much in the way of cool air anywhere just yet. in fact, going back over the record books, the last four months in a row since july 9th,
6:54 am
average. a 107 out of the last 122 days, only 15 days cooler than average since early july. right now it's cloudy and it's wet outside. today's forecast staying in the 50s with periods of light rain. we have pockets of moderate rain coming our way mid to late afternoon. so with all that, here is your ten-day forecast. 50s and rain today. near 60 with sunshine tomorrow. great weather for veterans day. make sure to shake the hand of a bundle up with temperatures in the 30s and 40s this weekend. the rain drops always make the commute a little tough. a new problem outer loop after 95, a crash in the back of there because of that crash outer loop at colesville road on the left side of the roadway. as we zoom in on the southeast/southwest freeway, a third tunnel crash blocking one lane here. and overall, 66 and 95 are looking pretty typical. i would say perhaps a little
