front of union station. one of a number of protests we have seen today. we're also getting our first look at president-elect donald trump in the white house. good afternoon, i'm chris lawrence. >> and i'm pat lawson muse. he's had meetings with president obama and key lawmakers on capitol hill. here in washington and across the country, there's still unrest in the air. we're bringing you team coverage this afternoon starting with steve handlesman at thhi steve, what are you hearing? was this a cordial meeting? >> absolutely. you could see it. first face to face that ran long and ended with kind words looked like a return to civility. >> thank you very much, president obama. >> reporter: the president-elect and president obama discussed trump taking over.

metropolitan police department. earlier in the day secret service as well. what you see is a crowd of people gathered behind a barricade. this afternoon there was a a demonstration of local students here and earlier demonstrators a at the white house. the protesters were emotional but remain peaceful. front of the white house. they were pushed back by police about the time that president-elect trump arrived for his meeting. the protesters were allowed to remain in lafayette scare park across the street from the white house. >> we don't condone the messages that have surrounded the trump

an impromp tu player. >> it's an amazing vukt ri for america. amazing victory for the world. >> reporter: this afternoon another group of protesters marched to trump international hotel. many of them tell me they are from georgetown day school. they are protesting mr. trump's positions on issues they say are important to them. >> we feel unsafe with trump >> unsafe because our school encourages us to be who we are. that means trans, whatever race, you should be treated with respect. >> reporter: now ahead at 5:00, we'll hear from some of these students individually, why they say they no longer feel welcomed in america with donald trump as president. that's the latest from trump international hotel. back to you.

of many cities that are seeing protests at this hour. these are some wide pictures from san francisco. you can see what appears to be a large group of high school student who is have walked out of class. there's some large crowds down there. they are somewhat disruptive, but at this point, they are just peaceful. >> this is the scene meanwhile in los angeles. this was last night. on officers in full riot gear walked them off the freeway and arrested at least 13 of them. the e freeway wasn't reopened until after 1:30 in the morning. >> today officials say those victims have life threatening injuies. they do not think that shooting was connected to the actual protest. and in richmond, virginia, trump protesters damaged the

. richmond police haven't made any arrests in those cases. first at 4:00, the closing bell post election the dow continues soaring to record highs. the industrial average gained about 219 points in trading today ending at 18,808. that's a new all-time high. . the s&p 500 negative territory. stocks taking the biggest losses. we're staying on top of the transition to president trump. you can see photos and protests across the country in the nbc washington app.

front yard. we're seeing surveillance video of the crime and hearing from the dog's owner. kristin wright has the story. >> reporter: dogs are like family so that's why a a dog owner in southwest d.c. says he's having a a hard time with the fact that someone snatched his dog right from his yard. a woman and a man standing at the fence. the man reaches over the fence and pets the golden lab and he scoops up the dog and takes her. cruz is a puppy 4 months old. his family says things are not the same without him there and can't believe that someone would just take him. >> i was just angry and wanted my dog back. we had him since he was a puppy.

today there was a large turnout in baltimore for the fun really of an mta bus droifr. he was among six people killed in a collision with the school bus. ten other people were injured. right now investigators are looking into the medical history of the school bus driver as they investigate the cause of the crash. brad pitt is no longer under investigation for the los angeles department of children and family services was looking into allegations that pith was abusive toward his oldest son. this after an incident that happened on a private jet in september. authorities have found no evidence of any wrong doing. for his wife, it was apparently a deal breaker. she filed for divorce days after that flight. her attorney said it was for the health of the family. jo lee is seeking full custody

>> we're in the nbc moscow bureau. it's day two since the world woke up that donald trump will be the next president. here in russia, it's front and center on the television screens and on the main newspaper. let's take a closer look. this is the most popular newspaper in russia. on the front page the headline reads "will president trump recognize crimea and become buddies with here. an interesting article on the front page. their correspondent says she voted for donald trump in new york and claims to have been one of the first people to have congratulated the president-elect. i have my doubts about that one. in god we trump. inside an article here says that russian politicians are locking

this year's christmas tree is on its way from upstate new york to the big apple. the 94-foot, 14-ton norway spruce was chopped down and loaded on a truck. . it was donated by a family and is expected to arrive at 30 rock on saturday.

a a powerful explosion levelled a home in virginia and then a fire broke out. >> you can see clouds of smoke pouring out of the home in washington county in the southwest part of the state. investigators think a resident using a propane tank caused that fire. four people were inside the home when it exploded. several neighbors called 911 and then rushed to the home to try to save their friends.

we're not seeing anymore rain. we won't have rain chances until monday. i want to show you the wider picture. i'm going all the way to canada. take a look at these clouds moving down to the south. this is where our cold air was coming from for the day on saturday. it's a quick arctic shot that's going to come across the great lakes into our region. saturday and especially saturday night is going to be really cold. tomorrow we're going to start to see thach day. 47 degrees. 61 degrees. breezy at noon. windy at 3:00. as that front moves through, we'll go from 62 at 3:00 to 54 by 7:00 and by u 9:00, some of you in the suburbs could be in the upper 30s for windchills by that time. it's going to get cold quickly. high on saturday only around 52 degrees. a chilly day for sure. breezy early. a great afternoon after a cold start sunday morning. and then we have a good chance for rain on monday.

musical tribute to veterans again for the fourth year. the broadcast will include special performances by country music star drake white and a long list of patriotic tunes. these airmen are incredible ewe missions. >> some fourth graders are warming up for tonight's veterans day program. the kids were assigned to find a way to honor veterans. they came up with a concert and food drive and created care packages and letters to second to service members overseas and patients at a veterans hospital. the students even created a wall of heroes to personally honor vets they know. >> so we decided to make a big wall and will pass out papers
