president-elect trump over some of the things he said during his campaign, among the demonstrations this student walk out that stopped traffic in montgomery county. we are at montgomery blair high school with the fallout. >> reporter: we are at the high school here behind me students have gone home for the day. we have confirmed with the schools that 300 to 800 students walked out today f know what the consequences of that will be and it's going to involve parents writing notes. >> not my president. >> reporter: hundreds of students from the high school walked out to protest the election of donald trump as president. >> we don't believe that donald trump represents the people as a whole. >> he didn't get the popular

it's not us. >> reporter: the school was allowing students to demonstrate on the football field, but many told us they didn't feel that was making enough of a statement so they took to the streets. students from northwood high school joined them. >> reporter: protests go against what they say -- students who skipped will be counted as an unexcused absence, changed to an excused absence. >> my mom knows. i called her and asked her if i could participate. at first she didn't know what i was talk about, but i let her know to turn on the news. she said okay. if it turns violent head home. >> reporter: the students were peaceful as they marched. the police used rolling roadblocks to manage traffic and keep students safe, encouraging

they made no arrests. >> we reject the president elect. >> reporter: protesters marched down the street where they told us they didn't agree with kids skipping school. >> they should definitely be in school focusing on education or what not, but in the same token, i remember when i was this age, which wasn't too long ago and they want their voice to be heard. >> reporter: the school officials tell me that they do allow for peaceful protests to happen on school hours. they highly discourage students from doing what they did today, taking them off campus for their own safety. back to you. >> thanks. now to a show of support for a church in silver springs that was targeted by vandals. today members of the synagogue went to our savior church to denounce the vandalism.

pressure after the coast. that will be moving to the north and east. i'll show you what it means for your tuesday morning commute. i have that forecast in 18 minutes. >> thanks. many were saddened today to learn of the death of gwen ifill. she spent many years covering the news on television most recently for pbs news hour. she started as a local reporter. she covered prince george's county for "the washington post." the current county expecter wrote today that he to see her rise to the highest levels within her field. to women in news rooms across the country, especially african-american women, gwen was a role model. she once told "the new york times" that as little girl watching television, she did not see women or people of color. young girls today can't say that thanks to gwen and her legacy. gwen ifill died of cancer this morning. she was only 61.

officials to prevent another 911 service outage. the system was down for two hours in july after an air conditioning unit broke down causing equipment to overheat. an investigation led to 19 recommendations. officials have completed five of those. they include procedures for new equipment. serious charges against a man accused of drivi child's stroller in a crosswalk. the 5-month-old boy was killed. that death sparked a public safety campaign and we are in the area now with more on today's indictment and the calls for change. >> reporter: blue ribbons like this can be seen offense posts and mailboxes across this neighborhood in honor of the

on august 31st is not forgeten. this memorial yet another reminder of that. today neighbors here reacting to news that charges have finally come in this case. it was a horrific scene, a stroller in this intersection. the suv driver was looking at his phone short crash and then picked up speed as if to try to beat the stroller through the crosswalk. residents have wondered about who would be charged got their answer today. the 45-year-old man was indicted by a grand jury on charges of reckless driving and failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. >> he should have been more vigilant about seeing what was going on. that's something that i think

tonight we're covering a family tragedy after four people were killed in a car crash on their way to a weddin children. the vehicle they were in nothing more than a pile of metal after a collision with a tractor-trailer in south carolina. pat. >> reporter: a firefighter on the scene says that the tractor-trailer drove on top of the car, that the tractor-trailer crushed the car.

killed in this horrific crash, 7-year-old devon harley, 6-year-old nickalos horrorley, 5-year-old leah harley. >> it's tragic for our family because they were so innocent and pure. they went too early. they were the best kids ever. >> reporter: two b sister, all three students at arcola elementary school. >> we're saddened. we are recovering from a hurt from a news that it's not imag imaginable. >> reporter: this happened as the family was on their way to a wedding.

tonight a contractor has admitted that he tried to bilk the national security agency and the u.s. office of personal management by doctoring his time sheets. scott mcfarland broke this story today. the man pleaded guilty to submitting time sheets for hours he did not work at both agencies. prosecutors tell us that he cost taxpayers more than $70,000. according to court filings, the simultaneously working at opm and folks at opm didn't know he was working at the nsa. prosecutors say that he's likely to face a year in prison. a staffer at george mason university is under fire tonight for a political post on facebook. andrew bunting is the junior assistant director of admissions. according to the media research center he called supporters of

worthless trash end quote. bunting said he was fearful of trump's presidency because the group which believes in traditional marriage said it is hopeful about trump's win. the university says bunting's statements were made on his personal account and do not reflect the views of the university. the admissions dean says there are processes in place to prevent a staffer's personal opinions from impacting admissions decision for the members of the house of representatives. one of them is the congressman from maryland. he says he will be able to work with republicans. >> i think we share a lot of common priorities, one of them is to revietallize the infrastructure of the country. i hope improvements in the metro system here in the washington, maryland, virginia area is high

now at 6:30 a maryland man charged with stabbing his children and attacking a woman in his home. why some believe this crime could have been avoided. chopper 4 brought us live pictures of the wild chase it as unfolded.

the county and those are the signs of domestic violence. to neighbors the family living in this home was happy. this man lived here with his son and their mother. he is described as a loving and devoted father and he's now in jail on charges he tried to kill his sons on saturday. >> it was a terrible sight to see the stab wounds and christianhi care of my kids. >> reporter: his mother made a tearful plea for her son and a judge ruled he was a danger to himself an others he should remain in jail. >> i've been trying to get christian help for some time because he's been depressed and suicidal also. >> these cases not only effect adults, but we're seeing the children are the victims of domestic violence. >> reporter: the state's attorney has made combatting

a priority. this case embodies a number of themes that lead to problems. family members say the man had become depressed over his job and the relationship with the mother of his children and there were other issues, drug use. >> i think this has triggered to him do what he did. >> intoxication and mental illness are two issues in these cases and it would be nor a judge or jury to decide whether or not that effects the ul >> reporter: he is also charged with sexual assault against the mother of the children. he's due back in court on december 12th. the two little boys, aged 3 and 4, are okay. they survived. they've gone through surgery. they're still hospitalized and they're expected to be okay at least physically. news 4. >> thanks. domestic violence is a serious concern in prince

died in domestic related crimes. news 4 is taking a close look at the problem and solutions with an initiative called safe at home. for information and resources we invite you to the nbc washington app. new at 6:00, we learned what set off this dramatic motorcycle chase in northern virginia last week. chopper 4 brought you the action live on friday. an officer tried to stop the displayed on the bike. he didn't stop and led officers on a chase that lasted for more than hour during busy rush hour traffic. he eventually gave up and surrounded peacefully. nobody was hurt and he is facing several charges including a felony that carries a sentence of up to ten years in prison. in just a few years you may be able to ride a street car

would take to make that happen and transportation reporter joins us from georgetown with the pros and cons of such an expansion project. it's a big one. >> reporter: yeah. pros an cons on both sides. it's hard to believe that we're talking about an expansion. the street car about a year old right now, but we're under the freeway right here in georgetown because this is where the station would be in georgetown and they say that it could be here in just every mile of the d.c. street car system is estimated to cost $100 million. this new segment would be about 3 1/2 miles to get to georgetown so that's roughly $350 million. that's within reach and planners say they can see it as a reality. >> there's demand for transportation to go through the city and that's not going to

manager for the street car expansion. he says if all goes according to plan the system could be up and running in just about six years. >> at the end of the day there's trouble getting around. our buses go through downtown at about five miles an hour on average. that's pretty slow going. we would hope to increase that to around 10 miles an hour. >> reporter: about 15,000 riders a day could use this new segment. there are doubters, those who wonder about the city's ability extension after a long and rocky road to get the initial section up and running, but there's a curiosity and optimism about a street car. >> i wanted to try it. >> to see the different type of public transportation i think it's great for any city. >> reporter: there will be a meeting this thursday to talk more about plans for possible expansion. the street car is free to use right now, but city leaders say

some strong aftershocks are rocking new zealand after a powerful earthquake killed two people. teams are still trying to get a

d.c. residents are getting a raw deal when it comes to the government's college savings plan according the fees associated with the direct's 529 plan can cost families thousands more compared to other state plans. tonight we show you why the d.c. council is now demanding action after their investigation. >> reporter: like parents everywhere, charles allen is pulling double duty. >> when do we expect to have bids to make decisions. >> reporter: asking tough

daughter. >> reporter: while trying to establish away cash for his children's college education through the 529 savings plan where parents can put money in a fund tax free. >> financial advisors are advising clients not to invest in the plan. >> personally i want to invest in d.c., but i want to make sure it's a good deal. >> reporter: he's one of three they're frustrated by what we exposed when we created this special 529 calculator that found many d.c. residents can save thousands of dollars by investing in another state's plan because d.c.'s fees are so high. >> the story that you guys have done that you've done is really highlighting this issue. >> reporter: ward one council members say they've received calls from angry parents. >> the fees are outrageous and it doesn't make sense.

city records, we found that parents have been complaining about the 529 fund for years. >> i have 8-month-old twins. >> reporter: including eric wolf who testified that d.c. charges him some of the highest annual fees in the nation, but unlike maryland and virginia hits parents like him with a sales charge on everything he contributes. >> taking 5% off the top, $100 number of constituents i have that contact me with big trust rashs. >> reporter: at that meeting they drilled the treasurer who explained unlike virginia, which has the largest 529 fund in the nation, d.c.'s fees are so high because its population is so small leaving him with just $400 million to work with. >> it is very very difficult to get the same level of response that you may get from an

virginia or state of california or another state that can get it out and say we have $5 billion. it's just not the same. >> reporter: there are only two states with a smaller population than d.c., vermont, which we found charges just a quarter of the fees compared to some of d.c.'s plans, and wyoming which abandoned its 529 program entirely to join up with colorado about ten years ago. >> do with he need to have a 529. >> reporter: the that option, but were rebidding the contract hoping to get a better deal, but that was months ago and now think the treasurer has taken too long to make a decision. >> we're in the exact same position and i haven't seen much change. >> reporter: in response the treasure's office says the procurement process has taken longer than anticipated due to the negotiating process with the potential vendor. we anticipate that the contract will be executed by the vendor

notice it's been trying to move to the north over the last three or four hours. it can't move into this area. it's very dry air sitting around the metro area. that's why we have the showers to east and showers off to the west, but you don't see it here. it will however over the next hour or two as the area of low pressure moves in. that's an upper level spinning to the west. that will move across and by early tomorrow morning the rain will be out of here. clouds to start off the 45 at 7:00 a.m. by 4:00 a nice afternoon. temperatures around 60 degrees. so the bus stop forecast looking good. you won't need jackets tomorrow afternoon. 62 wednesday, up to 67 friday and saturday and then we see the potential for a big storm, rather windy and cool and rain and maybe switching to wet snow on sunday. nothing big, but something we'll continue to watch.

jason i have to assume with this stretch coming up that was a really important win yesterday. >> yeah, it really was. the only hurdle left for this redskins team is to win games in prime time. remember, the season opener, they looked awful against the pittsburgh steelers. another challenge this sunday night against the green bay packers will help to get off to a good start over this three game stretch against the minnesota vikings. even though the are starting to runaway, i had a chance to speak with chris cooley and he's not ready to give up on the skins winning yet. first of all, you look sharp today. i've been here since 5:30 this morning. i dragged this out of my closet. this is actually 04 sweat shirt.
