accused of shooting and killing his son once worked for their department. shooting happened at a home along woodbridge street northeast just south of rhode island avenue. news 4's kristin wright is receiving new information and has more on that. kristin? >> reporter: barbara, everyone in the neighborhood seems to know this house as the one where a former d.c. police officer lives with his wife and son. those neighbors say they aren't aware night. neighbors say they heard three to four shots. >> you never imagine anything like this ever, ever. >> reporter: neighbors like kaye love are shocked. >> you never thought anything was wrong, but i couldn't even begin to imagine what even possibly happened. >> reporter: but d.c. police say a man shot and killed his son at their house on woodridge street in northeast last night. police and yellow tape still there early this morning.

retired from the d.c. police department and is cooperating with their investigation. >> the father, he pretty of was like one of our leaders in it the neighborhood. he pretty much made sure we all stayed safe, made sure everything was always okay. >> reporter: woody ray around the corner knew something was wrong. >> we saw a police car going the wrong way on this one-way street which is highly unusual with its lights going. we knew there was activity. >> reporter: he's sad to of life, my heart just goes out to the family not knowing the circumstances. >> reporter: those circumstances unclear. the father has not been charged while police try to sort out what happened. back to you. and d.c. police are also investigating a deadly shooting in southeast washington. a man was shot and killed around 11:00 last night outside the atlantic terrace apartments on 3rd street. the victim hasn't been

right now we're working to learn more about how a little girl was found today. the amber alert for annabell richardson is over. she's 4 years old. police believe her father abducted her last week. she lived in charlotte county. they say she and her father may have started heading north. they thought the girl was, quote, in extreme danger. well, we're getting some drying periods right no there, and just turning into a beautiful day. look at this absolutely gorgeous conditions. finally those clouds starting to clear throughout the region. so our live city camera just showing you just the wonderful conditions out there. temperatures actually not too bad. we're up to about 59 degrees today, may have to take my daytime high up a little bit because that's pretty much where i had it top out right around 60 degrees.

that wasn't really the case this morning. we had some rain showers, and we're still seeing a few rain showers down here through spotsylvania county. temperatures right around that 60 degree mark before we start to drop. i have a warm trend but then i have some very cold air headed our way. i'll show you that on our ten-day forecast coming up. >> lauren, thank you. we have new information now on the virginia man charge with involuntary manslaughter after police say he hit and killed a 5-month-old baby boy where a judge set bond at $10,000. he posted that bond and left the courthouse shortly after the hearing. witnesses say miller was allegedly looking at his phone before the crash on riverside parkway in lansdowne. he's accused of then speeding up in his suv to try to beat the mother who was pushing the baby stroller across the street. and a metro bus driver is assaulted, and now metro transit police are searching for a

soup onto her driver when she got off at union station. they say she refused to pay her fare when she got on at benning road and cursed at the driver. this happened early sunday morning. the driver is now out of the hospital and is expected to be okay. i'm pat lawson muse at the live desk. president obama just wrapped up a speech in athens amid his last scheduled trip overseas as president. he addressed the mediaaf prime minister elect. the president says they discussed greece's economy and response to the refugee crisis. >> i want to thank the greek people for their humanitarian response, for the crisis of so many migrants and refugees seeking safety in europe. it's an obligation of the united states it to help because this cannot be just a greek problem. this is an international

pennsylvania avenue. yesterday nearly 800 students walked out of class at montgomery blair high school in silver springs. students carried signs and chanted not my president. and big crowds could fill the national mall on the day after president-elect trum's election. a women's march is planned on washington, that according to "the washington post." they say it serves as a rebuke to trump's remarks about women and minorities during his campaign. today the d.c. council will have its final vote on the death with dignity bill. it would allow patients with six months or less to live to request lethal medication from their doctors. if it passes today, it'll head to d.c. mayor moistuial bowser's desk. she said she would not veto the legislation. it is legal in five states. new numbers this morning on a major increase in travel this thanksgiving holiday. going to be busy. you'll want to plan ahead to avoid all that traffic next week.

only fios can. covering northern virginia now, we're working to learn more information about a shooting in booed woodbridge. it happened around 9:00 p.m. last night in the area of powells creek boulevard. one man was shot and medevaced to the hospital with serious injuries. no word on a suspec and an autopsy is set to get under way on human remains discovered in gaithersburg. police say hikers found the remains on saturday in a wooded area. the person who died was likely a male. anyone with information is urged to contact police. a search for a man in fairfax county police say tried to show a little girl pornographic videos, two little girls actually. police say it happened on sunday

hospital of philadelphia say the rate of preschoolers diagnosed as adhd has stabilized. they say this change started in 2011, the same year that the american academy of pediatrics recommended a standard approach on how to diagnose and treat adhd. those guidelines suggest behavioral therapy as the first line of treatment for preschoolers, one in every three kids with adhd is diagnosed between the ages the title goes to the very talented dwayne "the rock" johnson. he tweeted about the honor this morning and made light of it saying, quote, and i smell good on most days. johnson will be on "the ellen degeneres show" today to talk about it, and his new disney animated film. you can watch it aller who on nbc 4 at 3:00. it's so beautiful out there

we didn't get a lot of it, unfortunately. thousand wednesday we're going to have a little disturbance that pushes through. that's going to bring us some midday clouds but we'll have some sunshine in the morning and again some sunshine in the late afternoon. thursday and friday absolutely beautiful. temperatures are going to be in the 60s and again above normal as we start to warm up. plenty of sunshine thursday and friday just gorgeous. current temperatures right now up to 59 here in d.c. as well as gaithersburg. temperatures in the mid to upper 50s. we might have to take the temperatures for daytime highs into the lower 60s. i don't think anybody will complain about that. people may complain about the fact we didn't get too much rain. we had a few light showers that rolled through the area, an area of low pressure up the east coast, now heavier rain coming through new york state and up through the new england area. we're seeing a little bit of drizzle there in the storm team 4 radar coming down the northern neck and spotsylvania and stafford county, but that's

who was 27 years old, all died on friday in a crash on i-95. their dad is expected to survive. now to a major new development in the case made famous by the popular netflix documentary, "making of a murderer." he could be released after a judge overturned his conviction. nbc's joe fryar has more on how prosecutors are fighting the release. after brendan was sentenced to life behind bars, he could soon be a free man, at least for now. his attorney says this holiday season our food will taste all the sweeter because we know for the first time in ten years he will be celebrating in freedom with his family. >> this is a huge headline. this almost never happens especially for a case this old. >> reporter: he was a teenager when he confessed to helping his uncle steven avery kill

the case was featured it in "making a murderer," a documentary that raised questions about those convictions especially his taped interrogation by police. >> be honest, you went inside, didn't you? >> yeah. >> you went in the trailer? >> mm-hmm. >> "making a murderer" has been such a revelation for brendan's case because for the first time in ten years he's finally getting his story listened to. the confession was coerced. a judge overturned his conviction citing his intellectual deficits and that repeated promises in the absence of an adult by repeatedly suggesting that they were looking out for his interests. the same judge ordered his release saying the state failed to demonstrate dassey represents a present danger to the community. usually when an old conviction is overturned it's because

clouds and a little bit of drizzle but now it's turned into a gorgeous afternoon, i mean, absolutely beautiful. that's our reston live camera. 267, the dulles toll road are just absolutely wonderful conditions as we it continue in. we'll get that sunshine and help warm things up a bit. we he can take it. 59 right now in d.c. we only topped out at 56 yesterday. we're doing a little bit better today. 55 in hagerstown, the mid-atlanti last night in new york right now so that temperature obviously a little bit on the lower side and there's that rain. what happened was we had an area of low pressure off the north carolina coast that moseyed up the coast and now it continues to move to the north. that's what brought some of the rain with it. that's unfortunately why we have the cloud cover. couldn't see the super moon last night. we'll be clear as a bell as we continue into the afternoon and overnight. looking good out there as we get into the evening. now once that sun goes down which, again, will be in the

whether you know it orrin it's one big step you can take towards staying healthy and you might just lose some weight at the same time. and joining us alice bender, head of the nutrition program for the american institute for cancer research. welcome, first of all. >> thank you. >> is it something new to talk about nutrition as an anti-cancer preventative? >> we've known the last 15-20 years diet play as major role in cancer prevention and it do in them that can help fight cancer, but we also know diet plays a very important role in our weight, how much we eat affects our weight. >> so let's talk about the anti-inflammatory diet, what is it and why? why do we need it? >> so it's one way to look at the foods that fight cancer. we have foods that have certain substances in them, like i said, that can play a role in stopping cancer from growing, can prevent

place. so it's a way to look at a whole dietary pattern really. it's not just one food that's going to make a difference, it's the whole diet that we take together. >> and is this something at that should be considered for children and people of all ages, or is this for people who are worried they might get cancer later in life? >> it's for everybody. it starts early. we want to start early with our healthy habits, learning to like the kinds of foods that can help us lower our risk. >> tell us what are foods we should be taking in. >> so it's plant-based foods and i think it's no surprise we're going to be talking vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans and legumes and then some spices up here that are anti-inflammatory as well. >> now you say these spices -- i think you have a chart. we're looking it at this beautiful thanksgiving plate which seems to have a little of everything. what do you have on the plate? and that's all good stuff, even the bread?

anti-inflammatory food, contain lots of fiber and chemicals that fight cancer. >> and looks like you have turkey on there, too. is that turkey? >> that's turkey. as you can see it takes up a fairly small part of the plate, about a third of the plate. we talk about getting plant foods on two-thirds or more of your plate and the animal foods to take up a third or less. >> and then you have some fruit, we can see in that picture, apples and even an orange pepper. >> think colorful. we have red, green, orange, sweet potatoes are great, leafy greens. the great thing about thanksgiving foods is the fall foods are very colorful and many of them are anti-inflammatory. we don't have to change the foods we eat as many as maybe how we prepare them. >> could you tell us what we should not eat? >> okay. well, over here we have a plate that is maybe sort of the old american way of eating where we

we've all heard the warnings, buying used cars could be risky. nbc 4 responds discovered a number of private sellers who are not disclosing potentially dangerous defects. susan hogan shows you how they're doing it. >> reporter: if you were thinking of buying a used car we first. nbc 4 responds goes under cover, what we found may have you thinking about who you buy your next car from. >> it was just a one owner? >> reporter: undercover investigation reveals something disturbing. >> i'm a dealer but there's no fee. >> is that legal? >> why not? >> reporter: and if you're not careful, it could cost you more than just a ton of cash.

sale with a clean title. >> mm-hmm. >> reporter: but technically this is a salvage title. >> unfortunately, not everybody is up front and honest about the vehicles that they're representing especially online. >> reporter: we wanted to see for ourselves. on craigslist there's a ton of used car ads that sound great, clean title, one owner, runs great, no accidents. but not so fast. using the v.i.n. or license plate number from the ad we looked up the vehicle's history report. you can do this for a feeon vehicle information system. remember this guy? well, his ad claims this hyundai had one owner. but when we pressed him about it, we learned a little more. >> it's one owner but i'm not the owner. >> who is the owner? >> i'm kind of dealer. >> reporter: you're kind of a dealer? who do you work for? the seller tells me he bought the car at auction and he can give me a real good deal buying it directly from him at this

posing as private sellers that are illegal dealers selling vehicles in a parking lot, at a restaurant or a shopping center, that they're bringing to you and selling cars that have hidden problems. >> reporter: this seller's advertisement left one important detail out. according to the vehicle history report, it was involved in an accident, which he did admit to us in person. okay, the reason why i'm asking you all of this is i'm susan hogan from channel 4. we did ask to see his dealer's license. once he realized we weren't buying the car he was done with us. >> i don't have time. >> reporter: okay. >> sorry. >> reporter: the virginia dmv's division of law enforcement tells us it's illegal for a licensed dealer to sell cars anywhere other than a dealership. with that being said the dmv tells us it is investigating the seller of that hyundai. and check out this next seller's ad. it claims this toyota celica has

branded title meaning the car was a salvage vehicle that has been rebuilt. this chevy tahoe ad says truck in great condition, clean title, but the vehicle history tells a different story. .c., maryland, and virginia require sellers of salvaged or rebuilt vehicles to disclose it in writing. in virginia sellers must also provide buyers with a rebuilt vehicle disclosure statement. buying a rebuilt car can come with some hidden dangers. could impact the safety of the car sooner or later. it could impact the value of the car. you could be paying a lot more money than that car is worth. >> reporter: bottom line, private sellers posting on sites like craigslist aren't regulated so it's buyer beware. according to the federal trade commission if you buy a used car from a private seller, it will most likely be on an as is basis. so if you see a really cheap
