about 65 in washington. >> chuck, thank you. your time is 6:02. developing right now, neighbors are on edge after a bear attack in fredrick county maryland. a 63-year-old woman suffered a broken arm, cuts to her head, and puncture wounds to both arms the maryland department of natural resources is using a tracking device to find the bear. megan mcgrath is live in fredrick now with what officials are saying as they hunt for the bear and she will join us again live in just a few county. closing arguments begin in a trial against a man accused of killing a 3-year-old girl. davon wallace is charged in the murder of khnijah bibb. he fired six shots at a landover apartment after a fight with somebody. wallace did not intentionally shoot the child say his defense attorneys. a status hearing for the

a man was fatally shot outside the metro station last summer. marcus king, christopher proctor andre dudley have been charged in the shooting death. look for updates in the nbc washington app. president-elect donald trump has a full slate of meetings today as he works to build his white house team. south carolina governor nikki haley is scheduled to meet with the president-elect. she is being considered as secretary of state. trump is also expected to meet with former national security considered michael flynn as national security advisor. mike pence will head to capitol hill today. he will attend a meeting, a conference with house republicans this morning and meet with speaker paul ryan as well as senate majority leader mitch mcconnell. pence is expected to meet with democratic leaders of the house and senate. >> america is worth it. our children are worth it.

give up. that was hillary clinton's message to supporters last night in her first public appearance since conceding the election. she made the remarks at an event for the children's defense fund. clinton was honored by the organization. aides say her appearance was planned long before last week's election loss. students in montgomery county schools will watch a video message from their superintendent. he wants the protests over the presidential election stopped. yesterday a 15-year-old donald trump supporter was beaten up at a protest. >> when students are threatened or injured as part of a protest it raises serious safety issues that require us to rethink the situation. >> today, students at the university of maryland are expected to walk out of class in protests this afternoon. the smoke from the wildfires in the drought ravaged south is now getting blamed for crashes on the road.

causing air quality warnings across several states. kentucky and south carolina, even parts of virginia are part of the warning zone with bans on lighting fires. as many as 30 large fires are still burning and are uncontained. a close call for a police officer in los angeles county who had his back window shot out after a traffic stop last night. this is in baldwin park in l.a. making a traffic stop near a fast food restaurant when the back window of his cruiser was shot out. police had k-9s in the area, helicopters in the sky, looking for the shooter. thus far, they have not been able to find anybody. we can tell you that the officer is okay but a very close call. from the live desk, i'm erika gonzalez.

this scenario would make any parents heart stop. a nine-year-old boy saves had i baby brother as the baby fell off the changing table. loo the mother had turned her back for just a moment to deal with another child. that is when the 11 month old rolled over on his stomach and fell off the edge. his brother caught him just in time. this happened in south florida. the baby is okay and the mom gave the 9-year-old a big hug. maybe a big chocolate chip cookie is in order, too. before you load up the kids, there is big news about child booster seats. the insurance institute for highway safety gives 48 out of

a group gathered for a rally in honor of philando castile. officergeron mo yanez was charged with mans in castile's death. they gathered in minnesota. castile's death sparked a wave of protests over the summer. many hoping the case could set we're learning more about the man at the controls of a commuter train that crashed. thomas gallagher's lawyers say that he was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. gallagher's train slammed into the hoboken terminal. he was the engineer. he received the diagnosis after the crash, not before it. the government official says the ntsb is looking into that as a part of the investigation. developing right now, a

for us in fredrick county with the latest on the search for this bear. megan? >> reporter: well, a very frightening situation. a woman in the driveway with her dogs, attacked by a bear last night. take a look at the map here. it happened on iron gate lane off of spookztown road not far from middle town. folks with the department of natural resources are on the scene this morning. a rural area. take a look at the video we shot a little while ago. dnr, they're tracking a mother bear that is in the area. now, she is wearing an electronic collar part of a dnr program. she was actually tagged about a year ago, and she has three cubs, we're told, and they believe that that may be the bear responsible for this attack. now, 63-year-old karen osborne was in the driveway of a home on iron gate lane when it appears she inadvertently got between

now, she is going to be okay. she is being treated for puncture wounds, a broken arm and cut to the head. the bear stopped attacking when she dropped to the ground and curled up. experts say it was a chance encounter between the woman and the bear that had tragic sequences. what she ran into was wrong place at the wrong time. this was not a bear laying in wait for a human being. >> now continues. i'm told that dnr protocol is to euthanize a bear that attacks a human being and the folks with dnr here on the scene here this morning, they tell me that they believe this is the first bear attack on record in maryland. back to you in the studio. >> all right, megan. thank you. hillary clinton's heartfelt return. what she wants her supporters to

>> let's get more information on how the pole came down with molette green in great falls. molette, good morning. >> reporter: i'm standing on -- at busy georgetown pike. take a look. crews worked throughout the night and 15 minutes ago, they got this roadway cleared. we saw several utility vehicles dominion, virginia power, one told me they had to do a complete fix in this area when a car crashed and snapped a utility pole in half. the major repair had to happen in order to get it all done and when it was happening, it blocked this stretch from springvale road down to nicholas drive. everything is all clear. everything is flowing along as it should be this hour of

it is 6:46 right now. to a developing story on metro, a new scathing report from the federal transit administration. >> the report looks at serious problems on the tracks that that need to be fixed now and the problems with the program that is in place to fix them, safetrack. let's start with safetrack here. the report predicts the total cost of the project will be $118 million. general manager paul wiedefeld million. it could also take until the summer of 2018. crews will work 12 hour workdays, six days a week and no plans to finish work not done during at lotted time. this is according to this report. loose or missing fasteners, water issues and tunnels with no light are among the issues.

here in the area. it is a rural area. a heavily wooded area. folks with the department of natural resources, they're on the scene. actively tracking a mother bear known to them. this is a bear that they actually put a collar on about a year ago. she has three cubs. she is in the area, and they believe that this may be the bear that is responsible for this attack. they have some electronic equipment. they're actively tacking her at this point. the hospital, she has puncture wounds, broken arm, a cut to her head. we're told she is expected to be okay. she just has to be treated for injuries but certainly a very, very scary experience. it is our understanding the pro capitol, the bear will be put down. back to you in the studio. >> thank you. all week long, we're getting you ready to start your holiday
