flynn has been a top advisor to donald trump. and like his soon to be boss is known for controversy and bucking tradition. retired lieutenant general michael flynn is a self-dedescribed maverick, who like president donald trump favors straight talk over political correctness. flynn ran the defense intelligence agency from 2012 intelligence advisor in iraq to stanley crystal. it was his loyalty that cause trump to pick him as his national security advisor. >> we have a deficit of leadership. donald trump brings a strategic leadership, a sense of who we are as america. >> reporter: lieutenant general flynn is not without controversy. he recently raised eyebrows to those in the military community

>> i have called on hillary clinton to drop out of the race because she put our nation's security at extremely high risk. >> reporter: but flynn has been accused of mishandling classified material, allegations he denies and there are questions about his management style. in 2014, flynn was fired as the d.i.a. director. some u.s. officials say he was ousted because he's contentious. flynn has publicly denied the real reins, he is too tough on islamic terrorism. >> there is a disease among this islamic body, like cancer and it has metastasize. >> some critics argue he's too cozy with russia pointing to a timeline moscow he spent dinner with russian putin.
