the little girl was killed. wallace was at the house earlier in the day. he got into an argument with somebody over some clothes. he left, came back later and sprayed the house with bullets. one of them killed the toddler. he's now facing up to 40 years in prison. he'll be sentenced in february. >> new at 6:00, police say they have the man who stole a puppy from a home in southwest d.c., but the man who did it says he was trying to save the puppy surveillance video shows the man taking the dog last month. he turned himself in and returned the puppy to police last week. he said the dog was neglected and even provided veterinary bills proving he cared for the dog. the original owner denies the climbs and has decided to press charges. >> a call for help from a woman who was attacked by a bear. it happened in frederick county earlier this yeek. the woman said she thought she

>> yes, sir y have been attacked by a bear. he's around here someplace. my arm is broken, my leg is broken. i'm chewed up on the back, on the head. i can't move, and i'm bleeding, and i'm going to die. please tell my husband i love him. >> the victim's name is karen osborn. she survived that attack by playing dead. right now, she's in the hospital. she's said to be in good daughter's driveway on wednesday night. it was dark at the time. osborn unknowingly got caught between a mother bear and her cubs. they later killed that bear. the cubs are nearly a year old and they can survive on their own. >> the deadly smoke incident last year could result in another lawsuit, according to our news partners. metro has asked a judge for permission to file claims

three cabinet positions are now filled. senator jeff sessions of alabama, named to be attorney general. he's served as chairman of the immigration subcommittee, causing concern that he may be at the center of a anti-immigrant campaign. his confirmation as a federal judge was blocked 30 years ago after an aide said he made racially insensitive remarks. that raises questions about how sessi of eric holder to be attorney general, but against the confirmation of loretta lynch. the current attorney general, because he said she spoke in favor of the obama administration's executive actions on immigration, which he has described as lawless. >> kansas congressman mike pompeo has been chosen as cia director. he's a three-term tea party republican. as a member of the house benghazi committee, he wrote a

homeless shelter unless the complex's fire alarm system is repaired immediately. news 4 obtained a memo from d.c. officials saying continuous extensive vandalism has damaged the shelter's fire alarms. unless repaired, there's an imminent threat to safety. families and volunteers inside say the fixes should be made promptly. >> it's a large building so having working fire alarms and working escape routes is crucial, not only for the families and children but for the staff that we have d.c. general. d.c.'s deputy mayor for public safety said contractors will monitor the building for fire hazards 24/7 until repairs a complete. >> congressman john lewis came of age at the same time as the civil rights movement here in the u.s. congressman lewis won the national book award this week for his graphic novel about the movement called "march." it was an emotional moment for

field. maryland enters as the number one seed and undefeated this season with those credentials one might think there's added pressure for the terps, but not so fast. >> any time we had pressure throughout the year with the number one seed and with the number one ranking throughout the career, i think we dealt with it well. i don't think there's any added pressure. as a program, we like to put pressure on ourselves to go out and perform every game. so i think if anything, it will be pressure from the guy next to you to do your job and do soccer, that's what we do, we play to our standards. we know what we're about, the culture we have. we want to play to our level no matter who we're playing against. we feel like we can impose our will on anybody. >> the maryland women's basketball team has been keeping it 100. as in 100 points per game. the terps scored 106 points this morning in their win over mt. st. mary's. they reenched the century mark in every game this season.
