november 19th. i'm david culver. angie is off. we want to start in the weather center because tom is tracking some wild weather this weekend. >> a strong cold front is going to be sweeping into our area by later this afternoon. between now and then some gorgeous weather. the best part of the weekend is from now to the mid afternoon. we'll have milder temperatures moving in. right now a lot of sunshine pouri temperatures by 10:00 will be well into the 50s. by 2:00 upper 60s and then fast moving showers coming into the afternoon and early evening hours that will move off to the east and west of it. we'll have the clouds clearing, turning windy. winds could be gusting over 50 miles an hour tonight. we'll look at that coming up this half hour. fire investigators working to find out what sparked an

fairfax county. two people were hurt, including one woman who was severely burned. derrick ward is live there with more on this investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. look at the scene here. they're in the 4,900 block of keeler court and fire investigators, including a dog which we understand will probably be an accelerant sniffing dog are taking care police have been canvassing the neighborhood since early this morning. this started at about 1:40 this morning when police were called to the house at 4911 keeler court in wood lawn. the fire department was dispatched at 1:48. they found an adult female with burn injuries that are described as life threatening and another adult was also taken to the hospital with less serious burn

tragedy after a plane crash in nevada. the plane was headed to the university of utah last night. all four on board died. you're looking at cell phone after the crash. the plane crashed into a parking lot. the impact caused multiple explosions. foam spill. we can show you the scene. this is santa clara, california. a lot amount of foam spilled out of a manufacturing business. that's all foam filling the streets, covering the cars. at first officials didn't know what it was. they later realized the building's fire suppression system malfunctioned causing that foam to spew everywhere. crews worked to get it cleaned up before a rain storm because

francisco bay. the foam is not toxic and no one got hurt. to peru where a massive volcano is spewing smoke and ash high in the sky for the 12th day in a row for activity at that peak. you can see video taken from a good distance away. smoke and ash reached more than 11,000 feet in the air. the volcano has been active for 18 years. ready for launch, decades in the making and a mission to this is pretty cool. it's new technology that's being called a game changer in meteorology. right now we could be in for a soggy saturday. we have tom updating his forecast of when you can expect

'70s. >> you're going from black and white television to hd tv. >> reporter: goes r is the new weather satellite that improves detection and observations by a lot. >> we can get pictures of weather going on over the united states every 30 seconds. today it's like every five minutes. >> my first time in my 28 years we've had this much of an improvement that we're going to start to see things that we've jus w but now we're going to be track and see them. >> reporter: is a quick crash course on weather satellites. we use them to see severe weather. without weather satellites, the accurate forecast we've become reliant on wouldn't be possibly. now, there are two types of weather satellites. one orbits from pole-to-pole getting pictures of the entire

meaning it's parked over the same spot like the goes r. one of the most anticipated elements of goes r is its ability to detect lightening frequently referred to as glm. scott, a physical scientist, helped develop the lightening technology. >> 22,000 miles up the lightening is detected by the sensor and within 20 seconds that data has made it to the ground. >> reporter: tornado warnings will be issued five to ten minutes earlier. >> the quoted number now is 13 minutes. it hasn't been implemented, but we're hoping we can improve that by five to ten minutes up to a 20 minute lead time. >> reporter: bottom line, once the goes r is humming 22,000 miles above the united states, we will be able to see weather details like never before. we'll have a better picture of

activity. scientists will have a new way to study weather features and as the more detailed information is fed into computer models our forecasts for you will ultimately improve. >> that was meteorologist amelia reporting. once the satellite is orbiting in space it's going to take a month or two before it transmits weather information. you think this could be a game changer. >> absolutely. it will improve advanced warnings and the extended forecast. we'll get better resolution on molds and help out our forecasting and be more accurate. we're pretty accurate now, but it will be a bigger improvement. so we're all hoping that the launch goes off okay. right now around the region we have a warning, an advisory for you, all these areas you see in the beige color are under a wind advisory from noon today

our way here coming in from the south and west by later this afternoon. the hour-by-hour timing on that, the areas in green are showers. the main event coming into the northern shenandoah valley, around 2:00 this afternoon, maybe a few showers ahead of that, but the main showers coming in with some strong gusts of wind between 3:00 to 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. right in the metro that and heading over to the sea board. they could get several inches of snow there. temperatures, we'll be in the mid to upper 60s and then it will drop back as soon as those rain showers come in. we'll be back down in the 50s and after that strong gusts of wind down in the 30s tomorrow morning and only the 40s on sunday. weather alert day tomorrow with strong winds and scattered power outages and the wind diminishes
