including one driven by carey. a fourth vehicle was involved. police opened the road a few hours ago. good morning. here at the live desk with new develops out of chattanooga, tennessee, on this heartbreaking story we continue to follow. the driver of the bus that crashed and killed five children has been arrested. here is his photo. this is jonathan walker faces five counts of vehicular homicide and more charges could come. at speed as a very, very strong factor in the accident that nearly split the school bus in half. 20 elementary students were hurt. and an ntsb team we've learned from washington, from d.c., will help with the investigation, on the ground there now. we'll continue to follow up. >> angie goff from the live desk, thank you. d.c. mayor muriel bowser will announce her choice for the next leader of d.c. public schools.

campaign sign snatched from his yard. police believe all the incidents are related. new details out of san antonio this morning. the man accused of killing a veteran police officer is now in custody. he says he was upset with the court system and took it out on detective benjamin marconi. 31-year-old otis mckane was arrested monday afternoon and told reporters as he was taken to jail he wants to apologize to the officer's family. the detective was shot as he sat traffic stop. marconi one of two officers killed in the last few days. three other officer were shot and injured. the national law enforcement memorial fund says more officers have been shot and killed this year than during any full year since 2011. ambush attacks are also the highest levels since 1995. this holiday season maryland state troopers will be working overtime to keep your family safe. there will be extra troopers patrolling state roadways all week.

catching drunk drivers. driving under the influence led to this crash involving a maryland state trooper on the beltway on sunday. the trooper was in his car when christopher howard slammed into it. howard was charged with dui. the trooper is expected to be okay. this is the second time this month a driver has hit a trooper's car on the beltway. since january, 15 maryland troopers have been hit while working on 495. speed is also a big contributing factor to speed limits near montgomery county schools. the new speed limit would be 15 miles per hour. news 4 obtained county records showing an average of seven students are hit near montgomery county schools every year. a public hearing on the proposal is scheduled for december 7th in rockville. opioid addiction is a public health emergency in virginia according to state health officials working to fight the problem.

. you're watching "news 4 today." now to more on the european travel alert we mentioned earlier in the news cast. the state department says they received credible information that isis is planning terrorist attacks in europe. they're hoping to carry out an attack during the upcoming holiday season. u.s. officials say americans traveling abroad should exercise vigilance when attending large holiday events. that alert will until february. a new york man facing charges he tried to join isis in order to carry out an attack in times square. 37-year-old mohammad naji was born in yemen and investigators say he tried to join isis several times but was unsuccessful. the suspect says he couldn't make it across the boarder into syria and investigators say the would-be terrorist wanted to kill people by driving a truck

deadly truck attack in nice, france. naji is facing charges of providing material support for terrorism. 14 before the hour. president-elect donald trump is expected to have another round of meetings in new york today but he's also denying he's using the powers of his future office to benefit his businesses. news 4's tracie potts is live on capitol hill now. donald trump took to twitter overnight saying it's well known he has properties across the globe. how is his transition team dealing with questions about his is making a big deal about this. his spokeswoman says his attorneys assures him there's no overlap between the trump organization and his hotels in the presidency in this transition. questions pop up because of events happening. just this week at the tom kierein hotel which as you know just down from the white house, they hosted a foreign reception, people who were there have

stays, doing tours of the hotels. a lot of foreign diplomats reportedly trying to book at the hotel in order to gain some sort of influence with the president-elect, but their transition team continues to say that there's no conflict of interest here. >> traci, we've seen some very public process that trump is taking in selecting his cabinet. what's the latest we could see in line for some of those positions? who's been so close to the transition team considered for secretary of state now also for up for director of national intelligence, sources are telling nbc. remember, mitt romney also being considered as secretary of state. newt gingrich has said he's not going to be part of the new administration. he wants to step back and take a bigger picture advisory role as opposed to focusing in on one department. so looks like he's out of the running for a cabinet position

friday. the restaurant says that it was unaware of what the organization stood for until protesters gathered outside. one customer said she saw members of the group making the nazi salute. the restaurant apologized and donated its friday earnings to the anti-defamation league. they released a statement saying this expression of support of hitler is extremely offensive to us as our restaurant is home to teammates of guests race, rilen and background. new pleas of help from the staffer seth rich. his parents put up flyers in his bloomingdale neighborhood where he was shot and killed in july. police believe it was part of a robbery but there's been no arrests. there is a $125,000 reward in this case right now. rich's parents squashed rumors yesterday that their son's death was part of a political conspiracy. brand new trains are rolling across the metro system but

news 4's transportation reporter adam tuss tells us what the issue is. >> reporter: this is one of metro's brand new 7,000 series railcars. they're supposed to be state of the art. the problem is, they might be too state of the art. you see, train operators have been getting some commands that they're not familiar with and a metro source tells me that a command was different recently to a train operator, the operator didn't know what it meant he relayed it to central control and central control did meant. so, there's a little bit of unfamiliarity with these railcars, even though they're out on the tracks all across the system. they sent us a statement saying since the 7 ks entered service we've developed additional troubleshooting techniques that are specific to the 7 ks. those lessons learned have developed into a new training module. still a source says some operators are rolling down the track without any idea what the train is saying.
