become long. and coming up, news 4's justin fitch will introduce us to a who has traveling with kids down to a science. developing in montgomery county, police have identified the two people killed in a four car crash in gaithersburg. 27-year-old steven diaz and 67-year-old george careyp this happened before 8:00 last night on airpark road. police say diaz was headed east when he crossed into the westbound lane and hit two o cars including one driven by carey. a fourth vehicle was also involved here. police reopened the roadway a few hours ago. angie goff at the live desk. we got new video in from the tragic scene in chattanooga where a fatal bus crash killed five children. take a look. we just got this footage from the scene. this is out of tennessee. the nighttime video. you can see that bus there,

by a tree after hitting a mailbox. we know that an ntsb team from washington, d.c., is there on the ground and they are helping with this investigation. all of the victims were elementary students. 20 others were hurt. >> we can't even begin to imagine how much worse it is for the families, the friends and loved ones of the victims. all of our hearts two out to them, our thoughts and our prayers. a bus accident with multiple injuries of children is every public safety professional's wo behind the wheel, 24-year-old jonathan walker, now facing five counts of vehicular homicide. among other charges police saying that speed in their words, quote, was a very, very strong factor in this crash. they believe that. police saying also more charges could come. eun? >> angie goff at the live desk, thank you. it is 5:03. d.c. mayor muriel bowser will

news 4's molette green is live to tell us about the mayor's choice. good morning. >> good morning to you. we expect to hear from the mayor in just a matter of hours this morning. it won't be official. keep in mind she's going to roll him out but it's not official until the d.c. council confirms her nomination. antwan wilson for his part has already submitted his resignation to the oakland unified school district and you should know he's also worked in he is credited with success in raising test scores. of course, that is a key component in this pick, since the city is smack dab in the middle of a huge challenge, trying to raise those test scores among the minority and poor children in the city. kaia henderson left the job in the middle of a big experiment as well, focusing on young black

antwan wilson for his part is no stranger to controversy. critics in oakland argue that he helped charter schools forge ahead at the expense of the public schools. so that's the latest live here from northwest d.c., we should hear from the mayor in just a few hours. back to you. >> mollette green, thank you. new this morning, secretary of education john king is calling for the end of corporal punishment for students. the practice is several states. the practice of paddling. he released a letter asking state leaders to replace corporal punishment with less punitive more supportive disciplinary practices. he said more than 11,000 students including a disproportionate of black and disabled students were subjected to paddling or similar punishment in the 2013/2014 school year. as part of this plan, i've asked my transition team to

actions we can take on day one to restore our laws and bring back our jobs. it's about time. >> that is a new video released by president-elect donald trump outlining his agenda for his first 100 days in office. he lists a number of executive actions he plans to implement on day one, including withdrawing from the transpacific partnership. a trade agreement that president obama has championed. this video was created and distributed by the president-elect's transition team. this was the press. senior adviser kellyanne conway also told reporters trump would hold a press conference, quote, soon. 5:06. vandals have targeted the home of a vietnam veteran and donald trump supporter. now montgomery county police need help tracking down who is responsible. someone spray painted a swastika on the front door of thomas roszkowski's home in silver spring over the weekend. he told police that he's also had eggs thrown at his house and an american flag stolen and a

police believe all the incidents are related. new details out of san antonio this morning. the man accused of killing a veteran police officer as you see here is now in custody. 31-year-old otis mckane was arrested monday afternoon. he told reporters he was upset with the court system and took it out on detective benjamin marconi. the detective was shot as he sat in his cruiser after making a traffic stop. marconi is one of two officers killed in the last few days. three other officers were shot and the national law enforcement memorial fund says more officers have been shot and killed this year than during any full year since 2011. ambush attacks are also at the highest levels since 1995. maryland lawmakers are considering a new law to reduce speed limits near montgomery county schools. the new speed limit would be 15 miles per hour. news 4 obtained county records showing at least seven students are hit near montgomery county schools every year. a public hearing on the proposal

rockville. opioid addiction is a public health emergency in virginia according it state health officials working to fight this problem. the state is now allowing anyone to buy the drug without a prescription. the drug reverses the effects of an opioid overdose. last year, 801 people died from heroin and prescription drug overdoses. in 2011 that number was 541. today president obama will award 21 presidential medals of freedom. this is our nation's h civilian honor. it is awarded to those who have made significant contributions to the country's security or national interests. today's recipients include ellen degeneres, with bill and melinda gates, kareem abdul jabbaar and michael jordan, diana and "snl" creator lorne michaels will be honored. a full list of the recipients on our nbc washington app. another chilly day outside as we head into the holiday week. will it feel as bitter as it did

beech avenue the road work, left lane getting by, 395 has cleared. >> thank you. as melissa alluded to, right now we are getting you ready for the thanksgiving travel rush. the roads are fairly quiet right now, but that will change over the next 24 hours. >> many of you will be traveling with your families this week and that includes children. news 4's justin fitch joins us live with more on a mom who says she has traveling with kids down to a science. i'm listening, justin. science indeed. this mom of three and her husband have three kids under age 6. she says for holiday road travel you don't just need to have your patience ready but you also need to prep. planning a road trip with kids this holiday, don't leave until you get this tried and true advice from this arlington mom of three. >> i have a roll of paper towels. that's crucial. an extra change of clothes for all your kids. but leave before the sun comes

michele and her husband carefully pack their van, sometimes days in advance. always extra mindful of the precious cargo. three kids under age 6 in those back seats. >> we also break up the trip so that it's about every three or four hours we're stopping. we just got back from a trip, so that's why the air mattress is still in there. >> reporter: the family's next trip is to dallas. their longest yet. her system, she says, will work. >> from when our first was 5 w a half years. >> reporter: now she and her family are staying home for this thanksgiving, which is surprising given that more americans are choosing to travel this holiday and also choosing to drive to their locations. as you heard their next stop is going to be dallas, some 16 hours and she says they will be ready. aaron, eun, back to you. >> god bless them. 16 hours on the road with three children under 6. saying my prayers.

state troopers will be working overtime to keep your families safe. there will be an extra troopers patrolling state roadways all week focusing on catching drunk drivers. driving under the influence led to this crash involving a maryland state trooper on the by the way on sunday. the trooper was in this car when christopher howard slammed into it. howard was charged with dui. the trooper is expected to be okay. this is the second time this month a driver has hi trooper have been hit while working on 495. back to work for virginia senator tim kaine. he returned to the senate after losing his bid for the vice presidency while running for hillary clinton. he says he is still surprise by the results. >> we won virginia so handily and we won the popular vote. we'll probably win the popular vote by more than 2 million. to win the popular vote and virginia and lose, that almost seems mathematically impossible

life. just not an election until now. >> senator kaine says he will focus his energy on the same issues he had before, particularly military issues. some controversy over a mural made to honor the military. the mural in virginia beach shows jets and navy ships after 9/11. the howard johnson hotel started painting over it. you can see half the mural is gone painted white. people criticized that decision on-line. the hotel's have the mural restored. such a shame to lose that already, though. >> wow. among mo than 100 people who became citizens here in our area, one person received a special honor. retired army captain florent groberg was honored by an outstanding american at the ceremony in alexandria, virginia. he received the medal of honor for his actions fighting in

citizens was to cherish the honor of being an american citizen. i got to spend time with his last week. just an incredible guy in general but absolutely a patriot. you can tell every time he opens his mouth how much he loves this country. new this morning, two maryland swimmers came out on top of this year's golden goggles award. the award ceremony is hosted by usa swimming. baltimore native michael phelps snagged three awards including male swimmer of the year and bethesda's ka named female swimmer of the year. >> deserved every time. >> a lot is what katie does outside of the pool. such a great person. contributes her time. the first thing she did when she came back was visit children's hospitals. >> we want to thank you for helping us raise nearly $42,000 to feed local families this thanksgiving. on monday we collected 100 large boxes worth of food outside the verizon center. you see it here. pat lawson muse says it's the

for tomorrow, getting a little bit milder, not quite as cold in the morning. nowhere near as much of a breeze to deal with tomorrow as you're planning to break away tomorrow. at least there won't be any big storms up and down the east coast. so that is welcomed news. couldn't rule out a few showers after about 8:00 or 9:00 tomorrow night. the northwesterly breeze will keep us on the chilly side for today. here's the unsettled weather in the middle of the country. if you're leaving town and flying out towards minneapolis or st. louis, kansas city, down towards d have some weather-related flight showdowns in those mid western hubs. no real impact on any of the northeastern corridor. already starting to plan out what you're going to do on your black friday shopping day. yes, indeed. clip the coupons out now so you have a plan of where to go and when to be there. near 40 degrees for early morning shoppers and really for early morning this time of the year, that's actually relatively mild. friday afternoon temperatures will be in the mid 50s. so that's pretty good. and the weekend on the whole,

this video was created and distributed by the president-elect transition team. it was not an event open to the press. meanwhile the president-elect is denying he's using the powers of his future office to benefit his businesses. news 4's tracie potts is live on capitol hill this morning and how is the transition team dealing with these questions about a conflict of interest? >> well the president-elect tweeted it's really the media, but, of course, it's media that's focusing on this and only the media. his spokeswoman says that attorneys assured them there's no conflict between the trump organization and the transition and the presidency. these questions continue to come up after events of like what we saw at the d.c. hotel this week, big events hosted by the hotel for about 100 foreign diplomats. there were give aways, free night stays, touring the hotel and raising questions about whether or not people are staying there and booking stays there to try to have some influence with the new administration.

york city, has been close to the trump campaign from the beginning. what is he being considered for now? >> we know and we have known he's being considered secretary of state. now sources are telling nbc they're also looking at him as a possible director of national intelligence. newt gingrich weighing in on this saying he thinks that giuliani would be a better secretary of state than mitt romney or that would be his preference because he thinks he's a fighter and he has a temperamt looking at him for the dni position also. >> tracie potts on the hill this morning, thank you. maggiano's in friendship heights is apologizing for hosting a white nationalist group. members from the national policy institute had dinner there on friday. maggiano's says that it was unaware of what the organization stood for until protesters gathered outside. one customer said she saw members of the group making the nazi salute. the restaurant apologized and donated all of its friday

anti-defamation league and they also released a statement saying in part, quote, this expression of support of hitler is extremely offensive to us. as a restaurant we are home to teammates and guests of every race, rilen and cultural background. >> 5:35 right now. some of the brand new metro trains are confusing the operators. the issue comes from the computer screens of the new 7,000 series railcars. sources tell news 4 transportation reporter adam tuss they're delivering messages the train operators don't getting the right training either. metro says hundreds of operators have taken courses on the new trains and that it created a new training module in response to these concerns. officials are fast tracking the replacement for a critical bridge between virginia and maryland. maryland is spending $765 million to replace the harry nice bridge within the next seven years. the bridge connects charles county in maryland and king george county in virginia. the new bridge will have four

angie goff with breaking news into the live desk out of northeast d.c. where police have an active investigation going on right now involving a fire incident. this is in the 1200 block of holbrooke street. we believe that that area right now closed off for this investigation at this point. details very limited. what we're told is that a person was taken to the hospital

we're bringing you everything you need to know about the thanksgiving travel rush. >> melissa mollet is in your first 4 traffic, vai is watching the roads from above, and jack taylor will get you around all the head aches. melissa, good morning. >> all my buddies to help me out this morning. again, right now by the way looking quite good headed out of town some time this morning. 1.2 million people from the area expected to hit the roads this year, up about 6% over last ea than 50 miles. so they've got to kind of hunker down and get ready for the trip. 95 in maryland right now seeing the maps, not bad. 270 headed to pennsylvania something like that take that route or western maryland that is nice and clear. 95 in virginia kind of always a little bit of our trouble spot. northbound you're seeing the normal delays through woodbridge, southbound a little bit of a slowdown there through the quanenyco area.

>> certainly this is one of the most heavily traveled routes from the holiday season or any time of the day. we're high above 95 in virginia approaching the marine corps museum and as you take a look here looks like the southbound delays have not reached this point yet. chopper 4's telestrator this is what it's going to look like in the coming hours and days. route 1 is an alternate headed southbound towards stafford and 66, take route 50, ro but the best way to avoid it altogether is leaving at the right time. we go to jack taylor in the wtop traffic center. jack? >> hey, brad, thanks. that's it. if you're going to head out now is the time if you try to do it any time after 7:00, 8:00, 9:00 in the morning you deal with rush hour volume and other travelers out there. the earlier you can go or the later before 6:00 a.m., after potentially 10:00 or 11:00 p.m. keep yourself safe.

corporal punishment with less punitive more supportive disciplinary practices and says more than 11,000 students including a disproportionate number of black students and disabled students were subjected to paddling or similar punishment in the 2013/2014 school year. the family of a dnc staffer who was killed is renewing pleas for help to track down their son's killer. on monday, seth rich's parents put up new fliers in his old neigh and killed in july. police believe this was part of a robbery, but so far there's been no arrests. there is a $125,000 reward in this case. meanwhile, rich's parents squashed rumors that their son's death was part of a political conspiracy. >> he was a young man that was here to help people and now i need your help, please. we don't know enough. we don't know enough about what happened.

this case. your time is 5:52. a virginia -- a florida man is being called a hero this morning after rescuing a teenager he found a 17-year-old badly hurt and hiding in the woods in dundee florida. according to police she was beaten and stabbed by two adults and only weighed 86 pounds. the couple is now behind bars accused of neglecting the girl. it is not clear whether they are her parents. >> had delt cabinets to keep them from getting to food to eat. she wouldn't have been alive very much longer. she would have died had she nod run. >> she said, can you help me? that's what i remember her saying, can you help me? >> the couple told detectives the girl had mental issues and injured herself. they both admitted they never called for help. right now, japan is bracing for tsunamis following a major earthquake.
