plus an outlook of your thanksgiving, maybe a little bit of rain. all that and more coming up. and good morning, everyone. i'm barbara harrison. >> and i'm aaron gilchrist. we begin with breaking news this morning. >> news 4's meagan fitzgerald is on the scene of a stabbing. what can you tell us what happened? >> reporter: the call came in said she saw a man suffering from a stab wound just behind us here near the statue. taped off the entire circle there with crime scene tape. we know the man was taken to the hospital with critical injuries, a stab wound near the abdomen area. police aren't saying if they're looking definitively for a

this man stabbed himself but this is early in the investigation so they're still trying to gather the facts here to understand what happened. people were commuting to work. they're not saying anything about witnesses who came forward to describe seeing someone running aw. police investigate a stabbing. back to you. good morning. i'm angie goff. we are monitoring a news conference going on in d.c. happening at eastern high school on east capital street where mayor muriel bowser is introducing this man, her pick for the next d.c. public school's chancellor, antwan wilson. let's take a listen. >> we know that our opportunity

related to our public schools. that's why it's been my commitment to make investments in our school. >> mayor muriel bowser with antwan wilson to the left of her. sources telling news 4 that wilson was picked in part because of his success in raising achievement scores. he has been the superintendent of the oakland unified school district in 2015, so since last year. tom sherwood there at that news conference, much more ahead on news 4 throughout the day. a woman is being treated for severe burns right now. she was involved in a bizarre incident on holbrooke street northeast. news 4's molette green is live to explain what happened. molette, this is unsettling, isn't it? >> reporter: yes, it is,

standing in the exact spot pretty much where it all happened. d.c. police have not yet released the woman's name and her age. this morning at this hour she is fighting for her life. at this point in their investigation police say it appears to be a horrible accident. disturbing details emerged throughout the morning into a woman's critical burns reportedly to her face and upper body. this man especially who says the badly injured woman found on the sidewalk is his daughter-in-law. a woman who is in her early 30s. >> i got in contact with the mother. >> reporter: every piece of evidence collected from the very personal, her wig, other items, burned matches, and what appears to be a scorched sidewalk reveal

here in northeast. >> she had some mental issues, so we're going to hospital now to find out how she'sing doing. it's awful. >> reporter: d.c. police used whatever images captured from a traffic camera, an arson dog to sniff out just how this all happened. police tell me this morning they're going to use whatever images captured on a surveillance camera just steps to get more information. we have learned that a paper delivery person discovered the woman right here on the sidewalk, but it is still unclear how long she had been here suffering. in northeast d.c., molette green, news 4. >> molette, thank you. right now we are working for you as the thanksgiving travel rush begins. want to give you a look at i-95 in northern virginia. you can see the roads seem pretty calm there right now. this, though, will be a

hours. nearly 50 million people will be traveling this week, that's the highest number in nine years according to aaa. more than 1 million of those travelers will be from our area. most of us will be driving to it our destinations. aaa anticipates 43 million people on the roads through thanksgiving. now here are some tips to make your trip as stress free as possible. get on the road before noon if you can. if you're flying, get to the airport at least two and a half hours before your flight. if you need to leave yca the airport, you want to book your parking now so you're not having to deal with that. you'll be all set when you arrive at the airport. and take advantage of the low gas prices by filling up now before the lines become long. looks like a good day for travelers, too. let's check in with storm team 4's lauryn ricketts.

right now. and temperatures as we continue through the day are going to climb to near 50. we're at 44 now. a westerly wind 10 to 15 miles an hour. we're going to see some gusts 20 to 25 miles an hour through the day. of course that means we have a windchill. you factor in the temperature, you factor in the wind, you get this number, the feel like factor. it feels like 37 right now in the district. you step outside the district it feels like the lower 30s in montgomery county, chilly with the wind chills and i think they'll increase slightly to the low 40s as we go through the day. but when is the wind going to finally die down? we have that thanksgiving forecast hour by hour to let you know what to expect as you make your plans. we have all that coming up in about 10-15 minutes. >> okay, lauryn, thank you. we are learning more about a tragic crash and about five children who died in that crash, four girls and one boy were killed when their school bus flipped and slammed into a tree in tennessee.

today. we have the whole story from chattanooga. >> reporter: the scene of a bus nearly split in half by a tree is a heartbreaking reminder of the young children and the dozens of others injured monday afternoon when their bus driver swerved off the road. >> we have five confirmed deaths. we have of those deaths three were in the fourth grade, one a kind garter and one a first investigation, police say speed is a strong factor, arresting the 24-year-old driver overnight. >> johnthony walker is being charged with five counts of vehicular homicide, reckless endangerment, and reckless driving. >> reporter: of the 37 elementary school students onboard, 24 were rushed to the hospital. here at the hospital where the children were taken several of them are still fighting for their lives in desperate need of

asking for volunteers to help meet the need, and people in the community are coming out in droves to support. >> the most undoctoral thing in the world is for a parent to mourn the loss of a child. >> reporter: a tragic loss just days before thanksgiving, even for the ntsb it's personal. >> we certainly send our condolences to the parents. my daughter rides a school bus every day. i understand that. we will do everything we can to try to prevent this from happening again. >> reporter: a warrant to remove the black box from the bus as they try to determine exactly what caused this tragedy. sarah rosario, nbc news. montgomery county police have identified the two people killed in a four-car crash last night in gaithersburg. 27-year-old steven diaz and george kerry. this happened before 8:00 on airport road.

lane. a fourth vehicle was also involved. a maryland state trooper is recovering after a driver smashed into his car on the beltway. this is the second time this month a driver hit a trooper's car on the beltway. sunday the trooper was in it his car when christopher howard slammed into it. howard was charged with dui. that trooper is expected to be okay. since january 15 maryland state troopers have been hit while working on the beltway. say good-bye to metro safetrack work for a few days. line ends today. during that time crews replaced power cables, fixed track switches and repaired signal lights. on monday metro crews will work on safe track orange and silver lines. 24 days of single tracking between east falls church and west falls church. >> and today president obama will award 21 presidential medals of freedom, our nation's highest civilian honor awarded to those who made significant contributions to the country's

more people are expected to visit arlington national cemetery today because it marks 53 years since the assassination of president john f. kennedy. an eternal flame burns at kennedy's gravesite. it was lit by mrs. kennedy during his funeral. only two u.s. presides buried at arlington national cemetery. the other william howard taft who died in 1930. "the new york times" says it is meeting with president-elect donald trump. that meeting is back on. he's expected to meet with the publisher and journalist this morning. earlier today trump tweeted that he canceled the meetinging. he is also slated to hold another round of meetings and he works to fill his administration. news 4's tracie potts has the

offensive to us as our restaurant is home to teammates and guests of every race, religion and cultural background. philadelphia police say a package that exploded in center city was intentionally set up. a 62-year-old man thought he was opening a package of inhalers this morning. instead it was a device designed to hurt someone. police say it was not delivered by postal service. however, they d't at this hour the man is in stable condition at a hospital. san antonio police are remaining vij land even after a man was arrested for killing an officer. otis mccain was taken into custody. he told reporters he was upset with the court system and took it out on the detective. he wants to apologize to the officer's family. the detective was shot as he sat in his cruiser after making a

37-year-old muhammad was arrested several times. the suspect says he couldn't make it across the border into syria. investigators also say they would be terrorists -- the would-be terrorist wanted to kill people by driving a truck through times square. he is now providing support for terrorism. right now the state department has issued a travel warning for europe. officials say they've received credible information that isis is planning a terrorist attack in europe. they are also hoping to carry out an attack during the holiday season. they say americans traveling abroad should exercise vigilance. the alert will be in effect until february.

new concerns about metro trains. they are confusing train operators and the people those train drivers ask for help. transportation reporter adam tuss tells us how they are responding to that. >> reporter: one of met rose' brand-new 7,000 series rail cars. they are supposed to be state the art. train operators have been getting commands they're not familiar with and a source t the operator didn't know what it meant. he relayed it to central control and central control did not know what the command meant. there's unfamiliarity even if they're out on the track all across the system. we've developed techniques that are specific to the 7ks and

flashover in as little as ten minutes. >> reporter: steve kesher has conducted a study of all the different types of siding and insulation used in modern day construction to see how long it would take a small outdoor fire like from a grill or cigarette to turn into it a dangerous attic fire. >> typically there are not smoke alarms or sprinklers in the attic space so you could have fir it's there until the ceiling drops down. >> reporter: brick, stone and stucco don't catch fire. a fire near cedar shingles can reach an attic within about 20 minutes. his study found vinyl siding and spray foam could reach an attic in less than 11 minutes. >> melt and move, exposing the foam behind it. >> reporter: while the combination of vinyl siding and half inch foam board became a

>> reporter: eps industry alliance says we are aware of very few residential fires involving polystyrene foam installation and when properly installed and used in code approved applications it is a safe material. the eps tells the i-team the ul report is a self-proclaimed research project representing nonstandardized test methodologist to help firefighters under the fire dynamics in theni but would welcome working with ul to identify appropriate test protocols for foam plastics insulation. ul developed the safety tests building materials must pass before they're allowed to be installed in your home. kerber says they stand by their study hoping it will help firefighters develop new techniques to battle these blazes. >> what they're arriving to today is very different than

kanye west is uer hospital after abruptly canceling the rest of his tour. according to sources west was taken in for observation after police responded to a medical welfare call. he's gone into the hospital following a week of controversial statements which included publicly attacking jay-z and beyonce. a representative has not yet responded to nbc news requests for comment. the man we're about to introduce you to is living proof that you're never too old to pursue your dreams.

to tomorrow, lauryn. >> we have to keep going with this weather and eventually will get the winds calming down after about 5:00 temperatures will be in the upper 40s to near 50 today feeling closer to around 40 degrees with that windchill. now we start tomorrow morning sunny skies, we are going to have clouds increase after lunch time. dry for much of the day. bring an umbrella if you're heading out on wednesday night locally because we're going to have maybe a sh midnight in through thursday morning and then we'll keep a chance of drizzle in the afternoon thursday. we'll clear out by friday. temperatures in the mid-50s. maybe a spotty sprinkle. that's mainly going to be east of i-95 but, again, mostly clouds for your black friday and not that bad, though and not that bad as we continue through the weekend. we'll be breezy on saturday. temperatures in the 50s but looking good through the weekend. >> all right, lauryn, thank you.
