now from green belt. >> reporter: he didn't show emotion before the judge today. in court with his wife and father-in-law, they listened as the judge decided that sullivan could return home but under strict conditions. a charles county sheriffs deputy found himself before a judge today. alexander sullivan a ten-year veteran of the force, was facing charges of child deputies were tipped off by center for missing and exploited children. the center gave investigators a name and cell phone number of a person they believe was uploading the images. deputies immediately recognized the name, got a search warrant and uncovered 200 pictures and five videos of child pornography. court documents say they were all located on sullivan's phone. in federal court, a judge reviewed the charges and decided to release sullivan under several conditions.

apologize to the officer's family. because of that ambush-style shooting such as the one in san antonio, police have been warned to take extra precautions while on duty. mark segraves talked to some police about how they are coping with these attacks. he also talked to those e leading the way to honor these fallen officers. >> i sent a message recognizing these things are occurring around the country. e we haven't had it in the city in particular. >> the same warning repeated in police stations au cross the country as well as here in our area. >> just remind them how to keep safe. to be aware, and to focus on the unexpected. >> reporter: nearly half of them shot and killed. far more than in all of last year. >> we have had ten law enforcement officers across the country shot and killed.

police says the spike in attacks in police officers has hit him on two levels. >> my first reaction is to make sure the men and women of the police department are being safe. on a human level, it's very sad for the families who have lost officers and even had officers that have been seriously injured. >> next may the names of 400 officers will be added to this memorial including more than 100 officers who died from illnesses

in the district, mark segraves, news 4. . some good news for riders on metro's red line. this is the last day of safetrack surge 10. they worked on safety and reliability improvements. the next surge is set to begin a week from today and run through december 21st. it will affect the orange and silver lines with trains continuously single tracking between east falls church and west falls church. we also learned metro is putting all safetrack work on hold for january. that could push the project back even turt. we learned from the transit administration that safetrack is going to take three months longer than expected to complete and the price tag is expected to double to $118 million. metro says it was anticipaing the extra cost and delayed schedule as more problems were discovered during the work.

quickly down to 37 by 11:00. it's going to be another cold night. last night we were down to the lower 20s in many areas. we'll be there again tomorrow. look at the temperatures now. 39 in 36. we already have a lot of areas in the 30s. temperatures are one thing. you add in the winds, which right now aren't gusting all that much, 31 for a windchill in . and will be that way for the next couple days. the cool air is locked in. we're going to see things transition to more cool air. storm team 4 radar not tracking any rain in our region, but we're tracking a storm to the west. maybe around chicago. could see some delays in chicago and minneapolis if you are flying out. but this storm will move our way. not tomorrow, it will move our way to thursday.

gaithersburg. a a driver crossed the center line last night slamming sbo two cars just south of woodfield. one victim was a grandfather of five. chris gordon is at the scene with an important safety are reminder from police. >> reporter: i want to share with you what i learned today directly from the head of the accident reconstruction team here in montgomery county. he says at least two fata all need to be aware of and avoid. an off-duty police officer discovered the four-car crash on airpark road just before 8:00 p.m. . he called in police and fire rescuers. police say the honda driven by 27-year-old steven diaz crossed the yellow line hitting two cars head on. the honda flipped and the man was e ejected and a fourth car

as we head into the holiday season. a woman is hospitalized with severe brn burns to her face and body. someone found her on the sidewalk this morning in northeast. police say it appears to be a horrible accident, but they are trying to figure out how the fire started. they are looking through surveillance video for clues. a man we talked with on the scene claims to be the victim's father-in-law and says she's in her 30s.
