a major backup to kick off your thanksgiving travel day. reporters on the scene. we'll take you there and tell you ways tew void it and other travel nightmares out there today, as a mother and daughter had to be rescued from a burning home in prince george's county. we'll talk about that and have the latest on their conditions and talk to neighbors about their frightening ordeal. good travel weather today. although there is some rain out in the midwest and getting closer to us. i'll have the hour-by-hour timing on that in just a few minutes. news 4 midday starts now. good morning, everyone.

>> i'm melissa mollet. >> tom, i saw you try to leave. >> try to sneak off. >> yeah, well, you know, i'm trying to hit the road early. as we do take a look at the storm team 4 radar. we are seeing some of this rain coming into ohio and leading edge of it little bit of snow. we have that right now just south of toledo and down to columbus. if you're heading out that way, you may be running into around our region. and our temperatures right now are beginning to climb into the mid-40s just about everywhere from the bay and across maryland and virginia and shenandoah valley and out of the mountains, as well. temperatures right around 40 degrees. as you get in towards the afternoon hours, we'll be hovering around 50 degrees and maybe 52 or so between 2:00 and 3:00 and then dropping back down to the mid-40s by 6:00 p.m. look at that hour-by-hour timing

>> thank you, tom. try to stay there. try to stay there. developing right now, big delays on the outer loop of the beltway because of an earlier big rig accident and now we have a new problem. now, the first one happened just after 7:45 this morning. a crash, a truck crash under to a couple of different cars and then actually tipped over crushing two. chopper 4 was just over the scene after that and stayed over the problem. let's bring in brad frates. you were just te we were on the way to check out the legion bridge and that looked like it was starting to clear out as we were going over it earlier. all lanes were blocked in tyson corner approaching the 267 toll road. let me pull up that shot for you right now. this is what we're looking at live. and this is what we're looking at right now. they just pulled one driver out of the vehicle and loaded him

outer loop approaching 267 and the inner loop is slow and already backed up because of what we were seeing earlier. let me pull up that shot for you. this is what we were looking at earlier right around 10:00. we got the call that all lanes were blocked on the outer loop going over the legion bridge. this is the truck that was pretty much crushed the two vehicles underneath it right on the back and right towards the front. now, all lanes were blocked the back to bethesda and silver spring and folks going over to the beltway. as they were going into maryland. so, that's the situation right now and we are really starting to see some backups developing as soon as we get more information on this, we'll let you know, but the outer loop remains closed headed in towards tyson's corner. that's all from news chopper 4. back into you in the studio.

be careful. we've got other problems out there right now. broken metro train outside the brookline station. just one day after safe track wrapped up that line. news 4 justin finch has more on that. >> metro is still looking into this, but likely caused by a brake issue on that train. red line service has resumed, but you might find some delays here and there. quite the rebound from what we saw earlier. reports of that disabled train. we see the brooklyn and stations first came down. now, on the ground here, metro staff, transit police and first responders stayed on scene here this morning. a few hours before, about 8:30 a.m. metro officials say they got word that the disabld train outside the brooklyn station. we're told that train was full

passenger aboard. now, metro worked to recover that train, significant delays and crowding began to build along the red line. slowly the am rush on this day before thanksgiving. and just after 9:00 a.m., that disabled car was recovered and brought here to the rhode island station where passengers unloaded. people are, of course, concerned. >> i'm not feeling very safe right now. you know, i'm just going one stop from here. i was just happy to hear running this morning. >> and as you can see, service here has rebounded quite quickly here. you may still find some delays on the red line this morning and throughout the day we're told, again, they are looking into this issue likely caused by a brake issue, not linked to safe track and d.c. fire did survey that train. that person likely self-evacuated. barbara, melissa, back in to

international airport. more than 48 million americans will journey 50 miles or more this thanksgiving. many of them will be flying. news 4 erica gonzalez is live inside reagan national with a look at what to expect before you head out there. erica, good morning. >> hi, barbara. good morning to you. we just heard from airport official os that today tsa is expecting 37,000 people to come through this airport. that, let me give you a little peak summer they look at about 30,000. about 30,000 passengers come through tsa security. so, let's look at that line. if you're packing right now and you're coming out here in a couple of hours. right now, things are looking great for you. let me show you some video because that was not the case of what happened early this morning. probably about 6:00, 6:30 in the morning we did see some peak lines. i mean, that line went really

minute to walk through all the individuals and get to the front of the line. so, definitely slow go. as far as people who are traveling and taking to the skies here from our area, about 90,000 people. the big, big picture, though, that 49 million americans will travel for the holidays. but the great portion of those americans will be driving, using four wheels. here at the airport, we spoke to one woman who got here with some time waiting in line and it was pretty surprised to see how long that line was. >> it's terrible. i feel bad those people are about to miss their flight y think. >> oh, no. >> do you guys have time? >> yes, we gave ourselves the full hour and i think we're going to use it in this line. >> so, i was saying this morning that my husband, for instance, we booked an early flight tomorrow and he said, why did you book it so early? this is the reason because of long lines like that. you want to get here really early and with time to spare.

researchers looked at data from the national traffic highway safety administration. more than 30,000 people died in traffic-related deaths last year. tonight police are on the look out for drunk drivers for what they call blackout wednesday. this is a real thing here. according to the agency, thanksgiving eve, it's unofficially known for binge drinking by college students home for the holiday. mix that with lots of people on the roads and police say it's a recipe for disaster. each year more than 400 people die in thanksgiving weekend. that includes blackout wednesday. a white house thanksgiving tradition happens in just a few hours from now. >> president obama is going to be delivering his final turkey pardon. this year tater and tot are competing for it. the pardoned turkeys have been sent to the estate to live out

morning. a group of computer scientists are urging the clinton campaign to call for a recount in three swing states won by donald trump. they think they have evidence that the results in wisconsin, michigan and pennsylvania may have been hacked. while they haven't found proof of hacking, they are arguing to the campaign that there should be an independent review. meanwhile, the cook political report says clinton's lead over donald trump and the popular vote has now surpassed south carolina governor nikki haley has accepted president-elect trump's offer to be his ambassador to the united nation. initially backed two of trump's primary rivals for the white house and will become trump's first female nominee for a cabinet position. edward lawrence has the latest on that. >> happy to be invited. >> reporter: nbc news has learned that south carolina governor nikki haley accepted the offer for ambassador to the

tennessee's governor has just wrapped opvisit to the elementary school where five children died in that bus crash on monday. after his visit he spoke to the media and called for the review of the entire school bus system. >> i think it's time for us to step back, all of us, local school boards, the state and look at the whole school bus process. ensure safety of the equipment to whether there's seat belts on those buses. >> six children remain in the hospital this morning. meanwhile, the ntsb says the school bus didn't have a black box. that means the data recorder does not exist for investigators to use in accident reconstruction. but three cameras were recording on the bus. that should help investigators determine not only what happened but it could show the speed the

county, fire crews are trying to find out what sparked this fire at a home in riverdale which trapped a disabled woman inside. the woman is now in the hospital with critical injuries after firefighters pulled her from the burning building. her daughter who is also inside the house is able to get out. a neighbor described the chaos. >> smoke was just pouring all over the place. fire trucks were everywhere. they kept banging and banging on the door. they were trying to get t saying her mom was near the front. >> the daughter was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. a dog was also rescued from that house. new details into whether the crash in gaithersburg where an suv plowed through the front of a townhouse. firefighters rescued three people from the home after the crash last night. a house staff member tells new 4z two of the people that live

disabled men. no one inside that home was hurt but the driver is at the hospital with minor injuries. we're following a developing story out of southeast washington this morning. that's where our d.c. police are trying to figure out who killed a man at 22nd street and vuvanna place. the man was shot multiple times, some time before about 9:30 last night. police have not released any suspect information. to this developing story now in st. authorities need your help finding sarah ann fisher. she was last seen on monday. fisher was wearing a purple dress, black leather shoes and a black sweater at the time. call police if you know where she might be. today, parents will likely have some questions for school staff at bethesda cherry chase high school. one day after they were notified five students became ill after

well, this consumer group is warning parents that they can unknowingly be buying these products and then putting their children at risk. we're talking about things like a pencil box, bean bag chair. these are products that were recalled last year and are still available to purchase online. they are among a number of products recalled due to hazards like lead, powerful mag nets and choking. >> an actual physical brickd mortar store, if there happens to be a toy that somehow, you know, didn't get pulled off the shelves, the retailer actually has in their system something that will alert the clerk to the fact that this toy was recalled. whereas you don't really have that on an online website. >> new 4z reached out to the toy industry association and claims there isn't any trouble in toyland. it says many of the products named in this report are

. take a look at this. chopper 4 live over the scene. this is a brand-new problem on the beltway. we're talking about the outer loop there just at the georgetown pike and as chopper 4 zooms, you can see a massive backup on the outer loop of the beltway. we're talking about a nine to ten-mile backup on the outer now, this is the second problem we've had in that area of the outer loop today. we're still working, actually. going to show you some video right now to learn what caused another backup earlier this morning. today, of course, one of the busiest travel days of the year. so, just after 7:45 this morning, a box truck crashed into several cars. chopper 4 over that scene minutes after that. that was outer loop there at the american legion bridge.

crash in tennessee, renewed calls for seat belts on school buses nationwide. national investigative correspondent jeff rossen spoke with officials on why seat belts on buses aren't mandatory. >> reporter: the scene in chattanooga is devastating. the bus split in half by a tree. >> the school bus flipped off the roadway and occupy would children and we do believe there are ejections. >> reporter: inside the children weren't wearing experts call it appalling. >> i feel very strongly that we should have seat belts on every school bus in the united states. when you look at children from the age of 0 to 5, they are correctly restrained in the back seat of their vehicle. that's their habit, they know that's safer. they get on the big yellow school bus. where are the seat belts? >> reporter: believe it or not, most states don't require seat belts on school buses.

the consequences can be deadly. school bus accidents keep happening across the country. wapello, iowa, the driver of this bus losing control. kids sent flying out of their seats injuring all ten on board. tulsa, oklahoma. another bus swerving off the road. four students sent to the hospital. experts say seat belts can make all the difference between life and death. just watch this crash test video. these dummies don't have seat belts on. now, look at the dummies that do. big difference. they stay in their seats. last september i went to see the administrator of the national highway traffic safety administration. >> would safety belts make them even safer? absolutely. >> why not mandate that right now? >> that's really the question we have been looking at.

a horse this morning who spent more than an hour buried up to its neck in mud. it took dozens of volunteers to help get it out of a trench yesterday. the rescue happened just before 6:00 in hartford county north and east of baltimore. they used a front end loader to help lift that big, big horse. pretty heavy out of the mud. but they were able to do it. >> good. all right, a tracked swimming off of the island in virginia. scientists say the female shark's tracking device was picked up there last thursday. she was tagged in early october off of nantucketnantucket. the shark weighs in at 960 pounds and 11 feet long. a little lady there. >> wants to spend thanksgiving south of nantucket. pretty warm up there in the

together, but one florida family had an uninvited guest raid their fridge this week. a black bear with a sweet tooth. someone left the garage door open at this longwood, florida, home. and the bear just came sniffing around. the bear skipped dinner and went straight for dessert. >> ignored everything. a lot of fish in here. see how this ice cream is. just like that. it was there. and took it out. broke this part off. when he did are my wife's little zucchini cakes. >> he knew what he was looking for. the bear took those cakes and ate them right there in the driveway. after enjoying the treats the bear walked off. they'll remember to close their garage door from now on. >> the bear may have taken down a little bit of foil at the same time. i don't think he unwrapped it. pop it in, right? >> the picture on social media

someone's turkey and removed the foil before eating all the skin off the turkey. one way to skin a turkey. >> my goodness. moving right along -- >> the weather. >> yeah. earlier we saw a video of the terrible flooding there down in panama from that tropical system. i've got the latest now on this tropical storm otto to show you. it is kind of unusual to get one this late in the season. we are still technically in our and right now it is just off the coast of nicaragua. and it does have winds of about 70 miles an hour. it is near hurricane strength. maybe a category 1 briefly before it does make landfall during the day on thanksgiving day and it will have 50-mile-per-hour winds that move inland there. definitely could have more heavy rain causing flooding there. hour by hour into the afternoon here. we'll have our temperatures climb into the mid to upper 40s and hover near 50 between 2:00
