supported common core which trump opposed during his campaign. there are new calls now for a recount of the presidential race in several key states. green-party candidate jill stein is calling on her supporters to raise $2 million for the effort. the group of political experts says a pattern in vote totals from wisconsin, michigan and pennsylvania suggests voting machines may have been manipulated. that group took its in white house has actually asked clinton not to call for a recount. jill stein, however, is pushing forward. she would need to raise the money and file a motion before friday. many prominent pollsters have criticized the effort. they say it is unlikely that any votes were hacked. the holiday rush is well under way right now. nearly 49 million of us will be on the move this thanksgiving.

by here. you can see that right now as we push in. some emergency crews off to the side. originally this whole area was blocked off. that cleared about five minutes ago. really it has been a messy commute for a lot of folks in the area today, starting early this morning, and some people already thinking about the return home after thanksgiving this coming weekend. a packed car ride for this family who we met at this crowded 66 westbound rest stop their thanksgiving destination, new market, virginia. >> we have two dogs and two cats here. >> reporter: you've got a full farm with you. >> yeah. >> reporter: the barking aside, the mom had a lot of time to get comfy with her neck pillow. a drive from d.c. that usually takes about 45 minutes took them 2 hours because of multiple crashes on the beltway. not bad for the passenger. >> i've been sleeping the whole way. >> reporter: this is the way to travel, right?

a risk. sunday night, even night is going to be a lot of trucks on the road. >> reporter: all right. as we look back out live, you can see this is where that accident is right there and past that, the good news is it clears up and lightens up, the commute southbound on 270. so folks have a little bit of some easy going until, again, they hit that beltway which we showed you at 5:00. with a lot of traffic building up there. we talked to a fire and rescue from fairfax county today. they have some advice about what you should plan to pack in your cars. some of you may already be at your destination or have loved ones at their destination, go ahead and share it. it's on my facebook page. give them good advice and safety tips before they hit the road to return back home here to the dmv. we'll send it back to you, wendy.

no word yet on what caused that fire. new information now after an suv crashed into a home in gaithersburg last night. the home health care aide who works at the house told news 4 that the two men who live there are developmentally disabled. the driver of the suv was another aide who was leaving after finishing her shift. the two men were in their bedrooms when the crash happened. nobody was seriously injured, bu residents have had to find another place to stay for a few days. no word yet on exactly what caused that crash. there was a ceremony today to remember former d.c. mayor marion barry. he died two years ago today at the age of 78. as we report now, a memorial headstone was unveiled to honor his public life and service. ?? >> reporter: on the grounds of

we're learning new details tonight about that deadly school bus crash in chattanooga. investigators now say the street on which that accident happened was not even on the bus driver's designated route. they're also having trouble downloading video from three cameras inside the bus because of all the damage.

vehicular homicide. johnthony walker did not have drugs or alcohol in his system at the time of the crash. state records show he received his license to drive a school bus in april. five months later, he was involved in a minor bus accident. nobody was injured. one mother says she's made several complaints about walker. >> every day they come home, they complaining about the school bus. i've been calling complaining about this bus august. i called the board of education. and i called the school. >> that mother lost her 6-year-old daughter in the crash. her two older children were hurt. tonight, six children remain hospitalized, five of them in critical condition. the news 4 i-team learned about three separate assauls capitol police officers over the past week. the first happened on thursday. police say a suspect was stopped

guy became physically combative. last friday, police say it was a traffic accident near library of congress. officers questioned the man who did not have a proper vehicle permit. police say the guy became combative and broke a seat belt while being transported. then yesterday capitol police arrested a person for hitting a cruiser with a piece of luggage. that happened near the capitol. police say the damage to the cruiser was significant. extra security measures are in place in new york city ahead of tomorrow's macy's thanks giving day parade. nbc's jay gray is live in manhattan. jay, how's it looking there? >> reporter: doreen, a lot going on. it's the one day inflation is a good thing, it's inflation day here in new york. thomas the tank. the train engine coming to life here. a lot of these balloons getting ready. you can see the teams. they're getting ready. getting things all geared up

bring them out early tomorrow morning. crews are creating magic in manhattan tonight. the inflation party on the eve of the 90th annual macy's thanksgiving parade. a holiday tradition that will bring more than 3 million people out along the streets of new york tomorrow morning with more than 50 million around the world watching on tv. and what they'll see are 16 giant balloons including the debut of the troll multicharacter balloon. the celebration will feature 27 smaller balloonacles, a thousand clowns, floats and marching bands from across the country. >> it's a dream come true for me to be here at the parade, but to watch my daughter dance in it, that's extra special. >> reporter: this year, there will also be stepped up security. after an online article from isis suggesting the parade would be a, "excellent target."

four people have been arrested after a major marijuana bust in the district. officers executed a search warrant at a business along wisconsin avenue in glover park today. they say they found more than three pounds of marijuana with a street value of about $60,000. the suspects are from virginia and d.c. d.c. police are looking for two men responsible for a really violent armed robbery. they just releasedh surveillance video. it happened at a convenience store on benning road northeast earlier this month. one of the guys forced an employee to open the register then hit him in the head with a gun. the second suspect who also had a gun forced another employee onto the ground then ran off with the cash. coming up now, touching sendoff from d.c.'s interim police chief to the winningest football team in and around washington. >> oh, my. plus, uncovering hidden treasures at the smithsonian.

there are millions of artifacts at the smithsonian, but most of them are display. news 4's angie goff went behind the scenes at a storage facility for the national museum of american history. she got up close to some national treasures hidden away. everything from a "star wars" star to old race cars. angie discovered there's a huge effort under way right now to make the scores of rarely seen artifacts available to the public. they're being photographed and added to the museum's digital library. >> the institution's putting

getting these collections digitized which mean they're getting out to the public, wrenchers all over the world. >> reporter: that's an undertaking. >> it is. it's a big undertaking. what we're engaged in now is a preservation effort, a documentation effort. and it's an accessibility effort. >> you can see everything that's already been added to the digital gallery. go to our nbc washington app and search "history" during the commercial break. a rare handwritten poem signed by ann frank sold at auction today for more than $140,000. that sale price was nearly three times what the auction house estimated before the sale. it's an eight-line poem half of which is copied from a dutch book of verse. it's dated march 28th, 1942. that is shortly before frank and her family went into hiding from nazi occupiers in amsterdam.

laws in the county. >> reporter: a lot of folks say they've decided not to drive out of town tonight because they're concerned about drunk drivers. but officers are warning partygoers that if you drink and drive, they're prepared to pull you over. again, officer peyton tells us that he was not injured but he was sore for a couple of days after impact. montgomery county police tell us this alcohol holiday task force will be in full effect through the new year. reporting in fitzgerald, news 4. so many reasons to be careful out on the roads. amelia, how's the weather going to affect travel? >> thankfully for the most part, the weather is cooperating. there is some scattered showers out there, but it's all really light and moving out of the area. so tomorrow morning, if you're heading out of town, some scattered showers once again. but, again, pretty light and as we look to friday, maybe a few sprinkles around. sunday, though, really nice travel weather. whether you're flying out of
