rant on social media before the attack and police say it may have been planned in advance. nine people are injured, one critically. the attacker, killed by police. chris pollone has the latest. >> reporter: mid-morning calm into chaos at one of the nation's largest college campuses, ohio state university. >> i was going class and people were running and was nervous. >> reporter: it was originally but a fire alarm caused a crowd to gather outside and that's when the man plowed into them. police say the man got out of the carry r car and attacked bystanders with a butcher knife. >> we heard the chaos, shots, scream, shots. >> reporter: an officer shot and killed him. >> he engaged the suspect and he eliminated the threat. >> reporter: law enforcement sources tell nbc news that the tacker was an 18-year-old somali

student at ohio state named abdul razak ali artan. they believe the attack was intentional and now they're trying to figure out why. >> this was done on purpose. as to go over the curb and get out and start strike them with a knife, that was on purpose. >> reporter: all victims are expected to survive, though the emotional wounds might take longer to heal. >> not real. you go numb. not supposed to happen. >> reporter: classes at ohio state havbe continues. chris pollone, nbc news. ohio state is the third largest university in the country, 66,000 students. as for the suspect, he was a freshman at osu. it does not appear that he was on any government watch list. and there is a new name in the mix for the job of secretary of state in donald trump's white house.

trump insisted hillary clinton should be disqualified for her handling of classified information. jim, back to you. local election officials are pushing back against mr. trump's unsubstantiated claims of what he called serious voter fraud. in virginia, new hampshire and california. today the commissioner of the virginia department of elections responded with a statement that reads in part, virginia's election was well administered, the election was fair and all s were accurately counted. and within the hour, virginia senator tim kaine tweeted back calling the voter fraud claim in his words shameful and noted that clinton won virginia by five points. kaine added in his words don't insult our voters. let's take a look at our forecast. rain is starting to move in

behind me, they had just repaired the window that was blown out by the gun shots. we talked to customers who tell us that they can't believe it would happen at this store since they have witnessed how well these employees get along. >> the workers seem to have a good relationship when they're working. i noticed that. >> reporter: many at this which i will chillum warehouse didn't realize what had unfolded here. >> i'm really shocked. >> reporter: prince george's county police say just after 5:00 this morning, someone decided to shoot up the outside of this grocery store. employees inside the store tell me it was their co-worker who had had an argument with another employee and decided to settle it by shooting into the store. >> it would make you nervous you figure after the holiday, wonderful, you know, time with family for something like this

>> reporter: one of the workers inside the store told me this was a fairly new employee, recently hired. >> i have noticed that they have gotten a lot of new people in there. >> reporter: there is video of the shooting, but police have not released a lookout or suspect description. they believe they're close it making an arrest. >> this is a very active investigation. >> reporter: no one was injured in that shooting. there were no shoppers inside at the time. just employees. the store opened on time for business, with cardboard covering window. there is now increased police presence at the store, as well. >> i saw the policeman when i first came up, but it happens everywhere now, so what can you say. >> reporter: prince george's county police have not released a suspect name or picture. we do know that both the police department and shoppers food warehouse are investigating to find out what motivated all of this. reporting live, tracee wilkins,

new at 6:00, federal officials are investigating an employee of nasa goddard space flight center accused of taking up skirt videos of a colleague. according to court filings, a worker at the goddard campus reported a colleague standing unnecessarily close to her. the woman reported feeling something brush against her leg. and then dropped to the floor. she later reported seeing the suspect sitting at a nearby desk with his hand under the table again holding that pen. federal search warrant shows that agents have seized the man's computer, phone and a small video recording pen. a father and son killed this morning in an accident along lee highway in gainesville.

not. that is the president's highest approval rating since december of 2012 right after he won he re-election when he scored a 53% approval rating. for comparison sake, president obama's highest ever approval rating was 59%. he scored that twice, in march and in june of 2009 in his first months after taking office. his lowest rating was 38% in december of 2013. the decline in approval part to budget battles with congress and the disastrous rollout of the website for the affordable care act. >> a young man says instincts kicked in when he helped save a man's life. malcolm hicks climbed down to reach a man who had fallen in to the water. he and another man performed cpr. hicks says he doesn't have any training, he just did what he'd

hour, but mayor muriel bowser responded back today putting out a tweet and statement saying soon after safetrack late night operations should resume. we took a ride with the mayor on metro recently, she said 234r59 out this decision is pivotal. >> nobody believes in the system and the hours don't serve them, then we would be basically putting our system out of business slowly but surely. >> reporter: again, take a look at the reduction of hours that metro wants to make here. saturday, 1:00 a.m. sunday, opening at 8:00 a.m. and closing at 11:00 p.m. a way to give maintenance teams more time to fix the system. but for riders like julia who work late at night and only has metro, these cuts could change her lifestyle. >> i was actually thinking about

that much tonight. and really by tomorrow morning, they may start going back up. tomorrow will be a pretty warm day. out there right now, 46 in frederick, 45 winchester, 45 front royal and 45 over towards manassas. so it's on the cool side tonight, but if won't be cold as we have the rain moving in. we need the rain. notice we're in a moderate grout here in the tan areas from baltimore to d.c., points to the north and west everybody else we're 6 inches below average. so rain is needed. and right now radar nothing in our area, but take a look back to the west, a very potent storm system bringing tremendous amounts of rain down to the south around memphis, and big time storms, tornado warnings, severe thunderstorm warnings, all of this making its way toward the south. another area that reallyneeds the rain. amazing how many rain they need.

the system kind of stalls out and we won't see a lot tomorrow. by 7:00 a.m., notice we do have rain across our region. so expect to see wet roads when you head out early tomorrow morning. take the umbrella with you. noon hour, still activity heavier rain north and west. and again wednesday, notice tuesday at 6:00, most of us out of the woods. we see a little clearing and then the rain moves back in notice by noon, it's almost already gone. that is a warm front that comes through and the afternoon wednesday, we could see a couple more showers. but notice at 5:00, that is really it. we stay in the clouds, but the wind will be a little bit of a factor too. first off, how much rain? only a quarter inch to maybe a third of an inch down to the south. but notice to the north, close to 2 inches in parts of our area along i-81 up towards portions of i-70, around the frederick area. but inside the d.c. area where we need it so much, only about a

here at the live desk, we're following breaking news in the brightwood neighborhood of d.c. you can see we're just getting new images of a car that crashed in to a building. you can see some of the pictures from the scene on georgia avenue. we have learned that a man and a 3-year-old child have been hurt. right now d.c. police have

and there has been significant damage to the building. right now we're working to find out what happened here and what caused the crash. and how the man and the child are doing. we'll push out any updates on the nbc washington app. i'm chris lawrence. back to you. you expect president of a college to travel and spend some money, but some of the students and staff at montgomery college thinkir >> the news 4 iteam digs into the college's spending record to find out where taxpayer dollars are going. >> reporter: montgomery college is the biggest community college in maryland. more than 56,000 students. >> financial aid working to pay back the financial aid. >> reporter: working hard to put themselves through school. >> i saved a little bit from high school and i'm currently working right now. >> reporter: these students say

investigating after receiving letters from staffers say that they think the president spends too much on travel and transportation. and she receive as $281,000 salary and gets an additional $3,000 housing allowance each month for her home in germantown. the school's board of trustees also agreed to pay after work-related travel. and for her wife to accompany her. the records we obtain show dr. pollard spent more than $70,000 since 2013 travel to go cities like nap p pa, ft. lauderdale and nearly 40 other locations. and a charge for five days at the marriott just 20 miles from her house because the school

prohibits employees from using taxpayer money to upgrade their flights, we found the rules at montgomery chemical are different. records show dr. poland spent more than $6,000 upgrading seats because the school says she needs to use her laptop and her wife has pain from knee replacement surgery. and they also spent another $3700 on their extra and overweight baggage. one example? $3400 just for aar austin, that doesn't include the $495 they spent on their five extra bags for a work conference. after spending $2700 at the hotel in hawaii, they spent another $2700 at the four seasons in austin. racking up $500 on room service, including an $80 breakfast.

a receipt for another $127 dinner. >> that is ridiculous. it should be going back here to the people who actually are paying, to the professors working hard. >> reporter: we also found at least 40 receipts for a pricey car service including multiple trips to the airport. at about $175 a pop, each way. and another $292 for a 15 mile ride to station. >> average of student who come to my college receive pell grants. >> reporter: when interviewed on how to make college more affordable. >> not only for the students, but also their families in order to help them be successful. >> reporter: a round trip taxi ride the iteam calculated would have cost less than a third of that price. >> we're all working towards paying for the tuition and the fact that she has all this money

why she was even using the car service when the college is also paying $850 a month for her infinity qumpt q 70, plus her gas, maintenance, parking and insurance, more than $45,000 on her car alone since 2013. >> i definitely feel like it should go 110% back to the students. >> reporter: both dr. pollard and the board of trustees declined our request for an interview. chemical can afford the trips which help foster strategic opportunities and partner ships that yield grants, scholarship, employee training agreements and more. he says the montgomery college board of trustees greatly values dr. pollard's vision and leadership of the college and resolutely supports dr. pollard's management in addition tips, strategic partnership advances here at home and abroad and stewardship of resources to

why the school is now paying more than $10,000 a month for yet another vehicle, this time an suv and an off duty police officer to pick dr. pollard up at home and drive her to work each day even though the college has its own unr. unarmed campus security, starting in february, they paid $52 an hour for this armed driver to work between 10 to 15 hours a day. while dve the international association of campus law enforcement tells the iteam there are very few university or college presidents who have armed details on a daily basis. montgomery college told the iteam that the board of trustees hired the armed driver after receiving credible threats against dr. pollard. when the iteam pressed for more details, the school showed us documents about a man who, quote, appeared to be homeless who tried to gain access here at

a website that used a racial slur against dr. pollard when she first became president of the school six years ago. since hiring armed driver, the school says dr. pollard has seen a tweet and separate facebook post using insensitive language about her. the school asked us not publish these documents citing safety concerns. the college receives 00% of its funding from taxpayer. so we went to county executive >> it's not something that you can take lightly and you don't want to second guess this. and so the amount of money that we're talking about is relatively small if you end up with the incidents that i think you need to -- >> reporter: he says that he would review dr. pollard's expenses but a spokesman clarified that the county exec will only do so if someone asks him to. in all, records show dr. pollard

the district has destroyed more than 100 atvs. and over the last few months, police have arrested 36 atv drivers. dozens of families facing eviction are headed to the manassas city council meeting tonight. they will be making a push for a different plan. julie carey broke the story back in august and joins us with more on what the residents want. >> reporter: well, there are impacted by this. and i can tell you they certainly felt hopeless when they got the news back in august that they would be forced out of their trailer homes. but tonight with the help of community activists, they have formed the save our homes alliance and they're going inside to tell the city council they think there is a better way of handling things. helen spends a lot of time at the east end trailer park these days even though she lives in a different neighborhood. but when she heard about the
