about potential conflicts of interest. senator elizabeth warren and other top democrats are press ing the general services administration for answers. back in 2013, the trump organization was awarded the right to develop the hotel property. the federal lease bans elected officials from benefitting from the contract. and because the government owns that land, trump would essentially become his o landlord when he takes office. eli is a cummings raised similar concerns on the house side. he will wait until trump take office before looking a at any potential conflicts of interest. developing now in prince georges county, police trying to figure out how a toddler walked out the front door of a daycare

kristin wright talked to the parents about what happened. >> this could have been very bad that 3-year-old girl was able to walk out of the front door of kiddie academy and make her way through the parking lot at least 200 feet to papa john's. we talked to them today. they couldn't believe this happened and that a manager who was on duty that night acted quickly and got help right away and now this little girl is at home an investigation into kiddie academy. a 3-year-old walked right out the front door. the childcare licensing division is also aware of what happened. the day care center notified them. some parents, though, are giving the academy the benefit of the doubt, but they didn't think this could happen. >> i was surprised, but it wasn't a concern pause i know everybody here is very well

child neglect. police say she was in charge when the toddler wandered away. >> we were pretty shocked when we heard. i don't know how the child got out. the doors are pretty heavy. >> reporter: the toddler got out and was walking au loan after dark. a manager at papa john's says the girl came into the pizza place. an employee tried to find her parents and called police. in a statement they told us in part, while the incident was unprecedented at the academy gainesville, we take the safety and care of all of our students seriously and we were relieved that the child was returned to the parents. other parents say this is all unsettling. >> when we trust children in another care, that's what we do. we trust that they are going to take care of our children. >> kiddie academy said they sent parents an e-mail explaining what happened. a prince georges county

after hitting a a suspect with his police cruiser. the grand jury indicted officer juan hernandez on charges of assault and misconduct in office. they did that today. the suspect was running from the officers through a field last summer when hernandez hit him with his car. prosecutors say his actions were excessive. the grand jury said his actions were criminal. hernandez has been suspended since that incident back in june. there was a metro board meeting today and it was not a happy place to be. metro wants to cut eight hours of service per week saying it will lead to more maintenance repairs. but local leaders are worried the system will not serve its riders. transportation reporter adam tuss has been following all of this from metro headquarters today. >> not a happy place to be. d.c. leaders are specifically upset about this. mayor bowser saying she doesn't agree with the plan at all. this is an issue that threatens

it wasn't easy. >> what i tried to say to you is we did make a compromise. >> we're going to find a compromise because we really are stuck. >> reporter: now that the metro board has given preliminary approval to a plan to slash operating hours, d.c. leaders are the ones who have to decide if they will block the whole thing. >> it's not a threat. it is what -- it is of the district of columbia. i just want to make that statement. everyone needs to know where we are. we believe we have compromised enormously. for someone to say that we need to compromise more is not a realistic approach to this problem. >> take a look at the new hours that got preliminary approval today. the system would close weeknights at 11:30, 1:00 a.m. on friday and saturday and close at 11:00 p.m. on sunday.

says 34 tornadoes are now confirmed in seven states. and the city of bloomington, tennessee, confirms that one of its volunteer firefighters and his wife were the two people killed in yesterday's tornado. jacob rascon, nbc news, alabama. buzz aldrin is recovering well after he was evacuated from the south pole. he's the second man to have walked on the moon. and tonight he bed but well enough to tweet out this picture. he was visiting as a tourist when he developed fluid in his lungs. he will remain hospitalized overnight for observation. buzz aldrin is 86 years old. he and neil armstrong were the first men on the moon in 1969. fidel castro's ashes are being driven to their final resting place. the funeral convoy left the city

wearing masks while out on his route last saturday evening in northeast. one of them pointed a gun in his head and made him lie on the ground. after violently assaulting the victim, the suspect stole his personal items. federal investigators con tirm iffed the cause of the metro train derailment last summer. the national sp between the rails was too wide. because of deteriorated cross ties. investigators believe metro track inspectors knew about those defects in that area years before the derailment and did nothing about it. that train came off the tracks in july outside of the east falls church station. 63 people were on board at the time, but no one was seriously injured.
