of southern california. it turns out a professor is the victim. as more details come out, what we do know is that this was not a random act of violence. >> reporter: the mud building, home to science students and classes, now the scene of a deadly stabbing sending shock across the campus. >> it's very scarey and it's just sad. i mean obviously my thoughts are >> reporter: the president identifying the professor who was stabbed to death by a student as bosco chan, a professor who joined the faculty in 2001. the professor knew the student but they do not know if they had previous problems. >> the victim was targeted by this suspect so the safety of this campus is not in question.

one democrat is running. all five made their pitches to the virginia chamber of commerce. this happened in williamsburg as one of the only two governors races in 2017. experts say this could give us an idea of what voters think of their new president. >> virginia is likely to be seen as a referendum on the first year of donald trump. >> gop candidate cory stewart was one of trump's most visible supporters and says his success administration. ed ga lispy is considered the favorite among republicans and has an early fundraising lead. 2019, that's probably the next time you'll be able to tour the washington monument from the inside. it's going to be closed to modernize the elevator. the money is being donated to

the fourth officer charged in the murder of walter scott. you remember this video that appears to show the officer shooting scott in the back as he run away. one juror said he couldn't convict a former police officer of murder. the jury is also allowed to consider a lesser charge of manslaughter, but a juror told the judge friday he could not convict in good conscious. later the jury verdict if they could get a clarification of the law. we're learning more about the investigation into an nfl player's fatal shooting in new orleans. the sheriff's department says that joe mcknight junior was called after an apparent road rage incident. the alleged shooter was freed friday afternoon. he has not been charged for the shooting sparking outrage. the authorities asked the community not to rush to

new details in a building collapse in south dakota. the body of a construction worker was found among the debris. look at all that. there they're taking someone out from the rubble there. a search dog found this person. the family of a 22-year-old rubble says she is doing okay. authorities don't think anybody else was hurt in the collapse. >> scarey. the moment a police officer shoot an unarmed man is captured on police body camera video. it happened last april. the department said the officer was startled and unintentionally shot the man. darcy spencer has more on how

policy. >> reporter: they may change policies after a 17-year-old veteran of the force accidentally shot a suspect during a building search. the body camera video shows police on the hunt for a burglary suspect last year. they found one suspect, a teenager, and tasered them. but they still needed to clear a building. one officer, shot. the officer would later say accidentally. he had been startled. >> are you hit? >> reporter: the officer franticly pulls the man out of the building and searches for a bullet wound. the suspect had been shot in the back. the video is among the evidence presented to a grand jury late last month. the grand jury declined to indict the officer on any charges. >> we moved forward and sent a

grand jury's actions we would not be prosecuting this officer. >> reporter: the suspect survived the shooting and is charged with burglary. his attorney said this was not a police justified shooting. he was unarmed, shot in the back and not posing a threat to the officer when he was shot done. his attorney says his charges against him should be dropped. >> we believe it is something he needs to be held accountable forward and that's why we're moving forward with that duty and has no contact with the public as the investigation continues. a trial for the suspect has been delayed. police arrested a woman for the murder of a man at a shopping center parking lot. the woman is from capital heights and she's accused in the death. police say jackson got in a fight with the woman last tuesday.

>> that won't happen until late 2019, 2020. >> reporter: they've been slowed down by the permitting process, but mgm and its additional capacity is coming online this week because the project was approved before a prohibition on development. >> in the rush and it's similar to the roads, in the rush to get the casino and what we want, they forget the really basic infrastructure. reporting. the company that owns the casino now planning his first international ventures. they have submitted plans to build a resort in spain at a cost of $2 billion. it would feature hotels, restaurants and shopping. if it gets approval the first phase is expected to be complete within two years.

it's left standing. >> thank you i have a home to come back to. i'm luckier than a lot. >> reporter: the toll of the gatlinburg, tennessee fire devastating. 13 people confirmed dead, including this couple from memphis. they were on vacation with their three sons who are recovering in a burn unit and a 75-year-old woman who died of a heart attack. the fire has burned 27 square structures damaged or destroyed. flames spared dollywood theme park. dolly parton is vowing to help those who lost everything. >> $1,000 a month to all those families who lost their homes in the fire until they get back up on their feet. >> reporter: people whose escape was down a fireside.

>> reporter: they made it out. some of their neighbors did not. nbc news. an athletic trainer is now facing charges of having inappropriate contact with a student. he's 33. that student is 17. court documents say that the teacher and female student denied anything inappropriate had occurred, but investigators obtained text messages from the student's phone in which sexual activities were discussed. after that discovery the students did admit to hugs and kissing at the school. the teacher passed a background check to work at the school where he also taught one class. metro leadership is in the hot seat over its service and safety problems. we learn why lawmakers on

>> it does not improve with time. >> reporter: that was the tone for the entire 2 1/2 hour hearing, members of congress expressing frustration that metro continues to have problems. for many of the members of congress the top issue was an ntsb report revealing metro employees falsified inspection reports in the months leading up to the derailment at the metro station last summer. >> to hear the report of falsified records is just mind blowing. >> we started a criminal investigation. i've hired two independent prosecutors. that investigation is still open. >> reporter: much of northern virginia's congressman was reserved for the board member jack evans who has said the district would cut hours and threatened to cut services in virginia if the commonwealth didn't come up with more money to fund the transit system.

21-year-old suspect of prince george's county and the 18-year-old knocked on the front door asking for help with their car. the homeowner told them to leave. then jones forced -- police say jones forced his way in and hit the homeowner with his gun. >> a struggle ensued and the homeowner was able to take control of the weapon and discharge one round. >> jones was hit and died at the hospital. eli is charged with attempted robbery and burglary with the use of a deadly weapon. video from a neighbor's house shows a black car driving away. police are still searching for the people in that car. 20 minutes away from the 7:00 hour. some people are already hitting the road early. a lot of you might be out there looking for a christmas tree this weekend. tom's tracking how long the rain will hold off as you prepare for the holidays.

weekend. for some it's a death of a tie rant, for others the passing of a revolutionary hero. the remains will land in cuba and it's where we find david culver with a look at what's to come. >> it was a week ago today that many cubans on the island nation were waking up to news that fidel castro had died. that news was announced on state run tv by his own brother. they arew final tribute to the man who ruled this country for nearly five decades. they were marching through the streets getting ready for the final stop in the procession in fidel castro's cremated remains. residents stopping about everything to focus on this final tribute. this is his hometown. >> yeah.
