that breaking news, gunfire at a dc restaurant. tonight officers have a man in custody. they say the suspect had a rifle when he walked into comet ping-pong, a pizza restauron connecticut avenue. police are still on the scene and we begin our team coverage. news 4 darcy spencer spoke with a bartender who was there when this happened. we want to start with news 4's derrick ward. >> reporter: we pulled up here about 3:00. you're looking down the 5000 block of connecticut avenue.

a bunch of people coming from the businesses on this side trying to get away from the scene. take a look at the video. you see the man on the ground bgz taken into custody by metropolitan police. they shelled the man for a short time. we're told he may have had a rifle. this started about 3:00. the police chief says this man walked into the comet ping-pong establishment, fired at least one round intoe let's get more details now from chief knewsome. about 3:00 yesterday afternoon, an adult male entered the comet pizza with an assault rifle. the folks that were in the establishment at the time immediately fled. there is some evidence that the weapon was fired inside of the location. metropolitan police department

him into custody safely. now, no one was injured. we're told that shot was fired into the ground. the person came in a car, they have that car. they say they also took a handgun from him. the car had out-of-state tags. we don't necessarily know if that means the suspect is from somewhere else. it could be a rental car or what have you. that vehicle, a toyota was just taken away from here asth they say they don't have anything in the way of a motive. lots of people in the restaurant at the time. they're being talked to as well as the details are all being vetted. the incident seems to be over now, all except for the investigation. live on connecticut avenue, derrick ward, news 4. meanwhile this neighborhood restaurant had been at the center of an online conspiracy sparking death threats. police say today's incident is not linked to that.

are pretty rattled. darcy spencer continues our team coverage with their reaction. darcy? >> reporter: we're here where the streets just reopened. that is the comet restaurant with the green front. there is still police tape in front of the restaurant, and we can see there are police still inside coming and going as part of this investigation. let's show you some video. i was able to spe restaurant at the time the gunman walked inside. he says he did not personally see the gun, but numerous people began to panic as they saw the gun and began to leave. all the employees got the patrons out of the restaurant. the employees left as well. so everyone evacuated. he said the man did act bizarre but didn't really say anything, make any threats, any demands. he mentioned that conspiracy

talk about today, whether they work at the restaurant or live in the neighborhood. many do believe, even though police say it does not have anything to do with that, people here do believe there is some sort of connection. >> no, he didn't say a thing. like i said, his demeanor was bizarre in that, if you come into a place to eat, you grab a seat, contact, didn't talk to anybody. went right to the back. do i think it's connected to a right wing neo nazi stuff? yeah, of course. >> you just think, oh, you know, people are very brave behind the keyboard. people are writing all these hateful messages but you don't think someone is going to do something about it. >> reporter: at that press

at the restaurant and the neighborhood. this investigation is continuing here at the restaurant. i was here a few minutes ago when police towed away the car. they were able to sweep the restaurant and the car and they were able to confirm there was no hazardous materials inside. >> clearly a story we'll be monitoring, any breaking developments in this case and we will of course send them to you in our nbc meanwhile, of course, another story we are closely following. at least 30 people have been confirmed dead in a massive blaze at a warehouse in oakland. that fire broke out in the warehouse during a dance party friday night. officials say only 20% of that building has been searched, 20%. so they expect the number of

latest. >> reporter: firefighters are working around the clock sifting through the shell of a charred way house looking for more victims. >> to be able to remove debris systematically from the building, the vacant lot next to the building, literally bucket by bucket in a methodical, thoughtful, mindful and compassionate way. >> reporter: the fire erupted friday night during what was called an party. the warehouse allegedly converted into illegal lofts for artists. >> bill black smoke came out of every window and out the door like ten feet, this black smoke. at that point only a few more people crawled out. >> reporter: according to the fire department the building did not have a sprinkler system or smoke alarms.

we've got breaking news if you are just now joining us, we want to bring y in northwest d.c. police say an armed man walked into that restaurant this afternoon with a rifle. this is new video of the car that he drove to the restaurant on connecticut avenue. you heard both darcy and derrick mention that they saw that car being hauled away. we understand from police he had an assault rifle and that he may have fired more than one shot, we believe, i represented the ground.

already fleed the area. they got away and we don't believe anybody was hurt in that incident. we'll continue our coverage through our nbc washington app with breaking news. the ashes of fidel castro have been interred in a cuban cemetery. this comes as the island nation and nine days of mourning for its former president. news 4's david culver reports from cuba. >> reporter: the remains of fi dead castro sit are. this as the people of the island nation of cuba begin to adjust to a life after fidel. known as cuba's second capital, santiago is slowly returning to life, as the remains of castro hit here just feet from the resting place of famed revolutionary jose marti.

by lunchtime, not too bad, low 50s, the sun returned after the gloomy day that we had today. as we head into the afternoon hours, highs in the mid 50s, 54. and then we start to see clouds move back in monday evening. we'll still keep it dry and around 47. tomorrow morning the showers are already out of here, but still dealing with wet roads. recess for the kids definitely outdoors tomorrow. if you want to exercise and you break, it's going to be really nice tomorrow afternoon. if you're getting the christmas tree, tomorrow evening is dry and cool. not the case on tuesday evening. i'll show you the rain on tuesday. 10:00 a.m., the morning commute not an issue. you can see at 11:00 a.m., as we move into the afternoon hours tracking areas of showers.

the path forward to the play-offs for the redskins is pretty simple, win the final five games and that's easier said than done. definitely they need to win against teams chasing them. the in arizona would be done. as for the other games across the nfl, both the eagles and the bengals enduring tough times right now. cincinnati up 13-0 at this point in the second. andy dalton, he is looking for more, finds tyler ief fefrt for the touchdown. dalton threw for over 230 yards and two scores. bengals up 19-0 after a missed extra point.

play-off is set. we knew alabama would be number one. the tide finishing with a perfect 13-0 record. clemson, they are number two. won the acc championship and had just one loss on the season. ohio state comes in at number three. the buckeyes did not play in their conference championship, and their only loss of the season came against the big ten champion penn state and the pac 12 champion washington comes in at number four. some people, including my should be number four. >> call him out. >> instead of washington. a lot of people feel that way. other bowl games announce today, the terps going bowling, heading to detroit on december 26 to take on boston college. virginia tech will face arkansas in the belling bowl on the 29th. navy against louisiana tech in the armed forces bowl.
