planes. trump also met with d.c. mayor mural bowser. >> she went up to new york and joined a growing number of local and national leaders passing through trump tower. the mayor spoke with the incoming president about some issues she considers important to d.c. >> reporter: d.c. mayor one-on-one with donald trump. mayor bowser said while she had her chief of staff and chief adviser in the room, donald trump came in all alone. the two talked for 40 minutes. mayor bowser says she talked about things she wanted him to know about d.c. and the residents and they are not a federal agency. he says they did talk about metro funding, about infrastructure and a wide range of topics. >> sometimes people have misconceptions about d.c., is

any more from the federal government than any other state. and we act like a state. we function like a state. i wanted to make sure he understood washington, d.c. as the unique entity that it is in the system. >> reporter: in addition to meeting with president-elect trump, mayor bowser will also meet with former new york city mayor mike bloomberg. at trump tower, news 4. the president-elect announced big move that could mr. trump reiterated his plan to cancel the contract for new air force one presidential planes. >> i think it's ridiculous. i think boeing is doing a little bit of a number. we want boeing to make a lot of money, but not that much money. >> trump tweeted that the cost of the new air force one fleet is about $4 billion. the cost of the contract is $3 billion. and costs are expected to climb.

in a statement boeing said, it's currently under contract for $170 million and wants to deliver the best planes for the president at the best value for taxpayers. trump is now on his way to north carolina, another stop on his thank-you tour. the latest on that and his major cabinet decisions in our next half hour. i'm megan fitzgerald in getting ready to reopen in the next few hours. a gunman walked in, firing shots. luckily, no one was hurt. take a look down here. you'll see there's a very visible presence of police officers. npd tells us they have increased patrol in the area making sure nothing suspicious is happening. also, take a look down here. ever since that gunman walked in here, a flood of support has been coming in. neighbors stopping by to show

to show that hate will not overpower this community. well, this afternoon students at watkinsville high school in montgomery county bringing home warning letters. a woman was at the bus stop and a man walked up to her and told her to shut up and put a bag over her head. she screamed, ran away. when she got to told staff and they called police. this happened in the cider mill apartments and police are stepped up patrol in that area. we're following up on a shooting in maryland. we know the name of the man killed. investigators don't think it was a random crime and anyone with information is being asked to call crimestoppers. they're offering $25,000 reward. the reward is growing for

staffer. a gop lobbyist is adding another $5,000 to solve the murder of seth rich, make tgt biggest reward ever offered in a d.c. homicide case. jack burkeman is now putting up $105,000. police are offering another $25,000. he says solving this murder is more important than partisanship. rich was killed in the bloomingdale neighborhood in northwest in july. a possible robbery. a sheriff is finally incident and shooting of former nfl player. and you only have to miss a little bit of sleep to feel the

well, we continue to see this rain move throughout area. storm team 4 weather alert. we're seeing pockets of moderate rain as well. of course, that's going to make it for a messy ride home. this rain going to stay with it. it's not moving out until after 9:00, moving the same way it came in from the southwest to we already have some low visibilities out there because of the rain. also we'll add on some more fog as we enter the overnight. look at this pocket of moderate rain. that continues to push up through the region. mainly even a little snowflake and wintry mix towards the west. that's where we find a winter weather advisory in higher elevations. now, we're dealing with this today. another winter weather alert day

doug will be talking about that in eight minutes. >> snow alert, thank you. a 75-year-old woman was drunk when she drove into two troopers but she's not the only one they arrested. the accident happened last night in waldorf on crain highway. ruth runyon hit an empty patrol car and officers were inside. they weren't injured but the tow truck driver who showed up to haul her away was also arrested for drunk driving. a developing story. the man who police say shot and killed a former nfl player is now behind bars. police initially let ronald gasser go after the shooting death of joe mcknight last week in new orleans. today the sheriff defended his decision, saying this was never

significant losses on isis forces. also right now, there is extra security at metro stations in los angeles. the city was on high alert after a threat of an imminent attack against the city's commuter rail. senior law enforcement officials told nbc news the threat came from a man using a pay phone in an overseas western country. the mayor rode the train this morning to ensure riders it was safe. in oakland today, the manager of the warehouse that we emotional, sometimes angry, apology. >> 36 people were killed over the weekend. nbc's jennifer joins us with today's new developments. what's the latest we're learning about the investigation and the victims in this case? >> reporter: well, it's been a long day so far. behind me they're shoring up the corner of this building they have not been able to get into.

>> how much rain are we going to get from this, doug? >> i think we'll see an inch. we'll continue to see more rain over the next couple of hours. the heaviest rain right now. it will lighten up. we'll show you storm team radar 4 showing you where that rain is, making its way through over the past few hours. we continue to see that now. notice all the yellow there. that is the moderate rain. you see little areas of orange in there as well. that is some moderate rain that as this has been in motion for the last few hours. montgomery county getting hit hard, parts of the beltway getting hit hard. prince george's county getting hit hard. bethesda, river road, along the beltway, along the american legion bridge and heads up along 270. this area going to get hit hard over the next hour or so. the wider view, taking us back to the west, notice all of this back here.

continues to go. we have a camera out this way. this is along i-68, next to the frostburg area. i believe that is ice on the tree tops there. can you actually see it falling. we did see snow falling there earlier. this storm under an ice storm warning. we do have winter weather advisories. an ice storm warning to the west. nothing around d.c. or any part of our area. the blue ridge, parts of the blue ridge and parts of west virginia. here's the ice storm war around the frostburg area and winter storm warning around garrett county. if you're traveling to the west, it's brutal back there. this is mostly for higher elevations, above 1500 feet. that's something we'll continue to watch. as we move through the rest of the evening, notice by 8:00 it's almost all out of here. this is what we told you yesterday. the rush would be a problem, but take a look. a couple showers coming in around 10:00, 11:00 tonight. they'll be cold showers.

around 7:00 a.m. could be overnight fog. we'll look more into that. as we make our way through the day, we'll clear and we should see sunshine. tomorrow, not a bad afternoon. pretty nice afternoon, as a matter of fact. right now it is just dismal out there. look at the clouds, the fog. 42. winds out of the north at 14 miles an hour, puts our windshield at 36 degrees. notice the current temperatures. these aren't the windchills. these are temperatures. 36 in gaithersburg. 43 in will continue through the next three to four hours. now, tomorrow, a little better. 40 degrees at 7:00 a.m. with fog. 46 by noon. clearing skies and some sunshine during the afternoon. again, not bad on your wednesday. then we get to thursday. thursday is something else. we'll watch another front move through on thursday. temperature around 47 degrees. could be an isolated rain or snow shower late in the day on thursday. 39 on friday. your weather alert day on friday. 38 on saturday.

welcome back. we ton see this rain heavy throughout the region. very moderate. i just got off the phone, i was on wtop, bob who does traffic on the 8s spinouts, especially on exit ramps with rain coming down. it's heavy through baltimore beltway, up 695. travel through this area, it is going to be a little bit of a mess. take your time. as we continue through the evening, that rain continues until just as we get into about 8:00, 9:00. now, we had a little bit of a wintry mix, especially headed out toward western maryland. higher elevations, up to about,000 feet.

those areas. not close to the district, but west of i-81. exactly where we thought it would be. a little bit of snow. but most everybody here in the area turning to rain. we're seeing it just move to the north and east as we continue through the evening commute. good news is, once this gets out of here, we start drying out overnight. unfortunately, we'll be left with a little fog. here's that winter weather advisory. goes until midnight. can you see for some of the high elevations around the blue ridge mountains and also going out st winter storm warnings out there in allegheny county, garrett county you have some ice storm warnings. winter weather advisory until midnight for these regions. if your travels take you out here later tonight, be careful. noticing closer to the district, we do not have anything here in our area. the wet snow and sleet for those areas. just rain for us. we'll continue to take a look at the rain and fog and time it out for you in a few minutes.

first popular vote bill in the state of maryland. here in the district the d.c. council gave preliminary approval to paid family leave bill, granting up to eight weeks of leave for child care, six weeks for immediate family care and two weeks for individual care. the $250 million program will be supported by a payroll tax on city businesses. opponents of the bill complain that two-thirds of the workers who will benefit live in the suburbs a income taxes. once it's normally approved, the bill is expected to take effect in 2020. continuing to track the rain across the region. we'll start getting lighter rain in portion of the d.c. metro area. you see the yellow on storm team 4 radar making its way into montgomery county up i-95. you can stop it and notice up that's where the heavier rain

then picks up around fret ricks burg area. the heaviest rain along 270 up there along i-95, towards laurel, up in those areas. bethesda, washington, notice the lighter green. heavier rain through d.c. right now and lighter rain making its way across our region. we'll continue to see that off and on this evening. as i mentioned, there's the first round of heavier rain. we got another round to the south. yet another one even farther down to the south. even a little light. i'll zoom in on this guy and see wh towards parts of southern maryland. a little lightning just to the east of richmond. how about that? that shows you how dynamic of a system we're dealing with. any time you get lightning with temperatures like this and you think, wow, that's just amazing. 41 in elkins. 42 in d.c. 45, richmond. on the other side, a little warmer, 60 degrees towards virginia beach. hagerstown, only at 38. coming up in just a minute, lauryn ricketts with more on not

this week. it is really cold. it gets even colder next week. possibly near record. we'll talk about it coming up. >> it's going to get worse. thank you, doug. new today, police are being concerned about drowsy drivers for a while now and now it's even more serious than we first thought. the american automobile association just released some new research. it found that drivers who miss even an hour or two of sleep nearly double their risk for a crash. sleep expertsom at least seven hours of shut-eye. the centers for disease control and prevention reports a third of drivers fall short. >> getting only four to five hours of sleep in a night is the same as driving while legally drunk. and if you sleep less than four hours in a given 24-hour period, you are as impaired as you would be if you were twice the legal limit of alcohol. >> even missing out on one hour of your normal sleep increases your risk of getting in an axe

>> oh, yeah. it is. we got the cold. we've got the rain. thank goodness we don't have any snow yet, but -- >> keyword being yet. >> yeah, that's what i said. because we may or may not have some i need to mention at least within the next 48 hours. i'll show you that coming up. right now, let's talk about the rain tonight. let's take one day at a time. that rain continues. of course, it is storm team 4 weather alert day. we had pockets of rain and we're seeing that now on the storm team 4 radar. after 9:00, returning for tomorrow. and it will be a little warmer. just around seasonable for this time of year. but temperatures below seasonable. i mean, look at this. cold, cold rain coming through areas just west of us. douglas through loudoun county into leesburg. d.c. we've been steady in the low 40s. i think we made it up to 43 degrees. temperatures staying put as we continue into the overnight. thank goodness we won't see the rain for everybody overnight.

we're seeing moderate rain moving up to the baltimore beltway out of howard and montgomery county and moving through the city of baltimore. everyone seeing more pockets of rain. especially down towards fredericksburg. it's starting to tape off through central shenandoah valley and up towards winchester. we have an area of low pressure. now off the coast. that's going to continue to move north and then jet off the atlantic coast. it's going to continue to bring tha southwest that dry out before we dry out here in d.c. and areas to the north and east. visibility has been at a low so be careful when driving out and about. already had our news partners talking about spinouts along the roads, especially exit ramps. please be careful. by tonight that visibility going to continue to be on the low side. i think we'll have fog overnight through tomorrow morning. that will quickly fade away as we get some sunshine during the

again, drying out through the day. i think that morning could be a little still wet and damp. now, 6:00 p.m., again, some heavy rain in pockets still shooting through. then we started to see it taper off just to the west. still some rain along i-95. i think we could have a few more showers late night around the region and then overnight, i see a chance for rain showers as that low pulls out to sea. from baltimore through annapolis eastern shore. you guys may be the last to see it while everybody else starts to dry out. we'll continue to have that fog, as i said, but we'll get sunshine through the day tomorrow. your wednesday looking good. nothing to worry about there. let me take you into thursday when we have a cold front moving through the area. arctic front. pretty powerful one. it looks mainly dry. we could have a few light snow showers. light being the keyword. a few rain showers as we go through the morning. then we'll start to dry out.

to be so dry. behind that front winds start to pick up on thursday night. and by the time we get into friday, it's another storm team 4 weather alert day because temperatures will be in the 30s. don't let that number fool you. with blustery northwest winds gusting up to 20, 25 miles an hour. it will feel like the teens when you wake up friday morning. will feel like 20s much through the day. you'll trade your rain boots and raincoat today for a winter coat and hat and gloves by friday. we rebound on monday back in the 50s. and then as we get into the end of next week, those temperatures really start to drop. in fact, some areas will not make it out of the 20s. doug will be talking more about that cold airs as we settle into next week. that's coming up just after 5:00. >> all right, lauryn. well, this is snuggy weather right now. question is, are you using the real thing?

makers sold on tv are suing amazon for infringement for allowing counterfeit products to be sold through its site. it comes through two weeks after amazon filed its own lawsuit targeting vendors for the same thing. if you're a parent you should practice what you preach when it comes to time in front of a screen. between tweeting, texting, bring watching television, parents spent an average 9 hours, every day using media and technology. it's mostly entertainment time, not time at work. the study from common sense media is based on a national survey of 1800 parents of tweens and teens. and i don't know that you would be guilty of something like that, but a lot of parents are. >> yeah, that's right. we want to talk about maryland's new casino.

we continue to see that heavy rain move through the region. and just through the baltimore area right now, but look back down towards fredericksburg. that's where we're continuing to see more heavy rain throughout our area. that will continue to push through the north and east. really up through waldorf and into southern maryland, northern portions of southern maryland, out towards annapolis. that's where we're looking for heavy rain that continues to fall. even some more portions of moderate rain.

with wtop, talking to their traffic guys and they're talking about a lot of spinout on the roadways. be careful if you need to head back out as you go through this evening. there's some of that heavy rain coming down inside baltimore. everybody, montgomery county, howard county getting in on just a little bit more of that light, steady rain we've been seeing through much of the day. let me take you over towards our -- really our western fringe right now. coming up through maryland and then frostburg where they had a tenth of an inch of some snow and ice accumulation. even winchester had a little snowfall moving through the area. can you see that's mainly changed to rain. we'll keep a little bit of some ice and wintry mix through western maryland. of course, the higher elevations. over about 1500 to 2,000 feet. this rain will continue to move through because we've got an

rain right now as well as feeling that cold. good evening. >> i'm chris lawrence in for jim tonight. you can take a look at the storm team 4 on radar. it is wet, it is nasty out there and pretty much everybody's seeing it. >> let's check in with doug and lauren in the storm center. how long is this going to last? >> the heavy stuff for another two, three hours and light rain continues through about 11:00. it's cold out there, too. >> cold. just to the west of us, west of i-81 we have wintry mix, sn winter weather advisories out there. >> it's that time of year, december. that's why we're in weather alert mode here. let's take a look at storm team 4 radar and show you where the rain is. we just had a heavy batch of rain come through the d.c. area last hour. this is going towards the north, towards the baltimore region. you see it up towards baltimore. that's the heavy rain we saw last hour. here it is right in here. notice the oranges and reds. also notice down to the south we've got more of the yellows and oranges.

heavy rain is coming through here. by the way, 95, this is just really heavy down to the south. i'll zoom in on this area. up see what i'm talking about. just south of d.c. around waldorf, quantico, fredericksburg. 95 just a mess tonight. it's always a mess at this hour. going to continue to be as we move through the night. seeing what we're moving out to the west. there is snow and ice. ice storm rn warning and winter weather advisories have been posted back to the west. nobody in our area. west virginia and parts of western maryland continue to see that. you notice the back edge of this rain right here making its way through. that's the back edge of the steady rain. in behind it, though, we'll have a couple of showers right through about 10:00, 11:00 tonight. i mentioned the temperatures. once again, it's plain cold out there this afternoon. 37, hagerstown up to 43 in d.c. that may be the highest

40 in elkins, west virginia. on the other side of that front down to virginia beach coming in close to 60 degrees. you can see where that cold air is, all the way down towards the coastline. going to continue to be there. now, i mentioned the cold. above 1500 feet. that's why we have winter weather advisories here. we're talking winter weather advisory for hardy, morgan county, allegheny county, western allegheny under an ice storm warning. you've got kids going up to frostburg, might as well give them a call and mess. garrett county, maryland, now under a winter storm warning out there. that is once again for ice related to that of what's happening. now, as far as the traffic is concerned, we'll continue to see that extremely heavy rain all across our region through 7:00, 8:00. when i come back to you guys in about the next 15 to 20 minutes, we're going to talk about the end of this rain and then the beginning of the arctic cold moving on in. see you then. >> there's good news.

president-elect donald trump is heading to north carolina this evening for the second stop of his thank-you tour. the event is being held in fayetteville, the home of ft. bragg. trump's pick for secretary of defense, retired general james mattis, will also take the stage. d.c. mayor muriel bowser brought her own list to trump today. she wanted to talk about certain things with mr. trump. she says she wants the incoming president to know the district this is mark segraves went up to d.c. as well. >> reporter: it was a meeting mayor bowser asked for and president-elect trump wanted to have himself. the two met inside trump tower for more than 40 minutes. mayor bowser had her top two advisers in the room. president-elect trump handled the meeting on his own with no staff. one of the top issues was transportation.
