with a look at what's to come on this chilly day. amelia? >> well aaron, we're talking about highs in the mid to upper 40s. here's a look at storm team 4 radar. still plenty of clouds across the area. the white is clouds, not snow or rain. but notice up around frederick in northern loudoun county, back into the panhandle of west virginia. we so a little more green. what that is is clearing. and that trend will be moving into the d.c. metro area this afternoon. during the mid afternoon hours, not too bad out december. right now, kind of chilly, we're still in the 40s. the district, one of the warmer spots at 47. you can see the suburbs in the low to mid 40s. and highs today near 50 degrees. once the sun comes out, we'll see our temperatures start to come up. we're going to hover around 48 degrees from about 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. after that we start to cool off around 44 at 5:00 p.m. and by 7:00 p.m. low 40s and the clouds start to

leading up to tonight's opening. news4's justin finch is live in oxon hill where they're putting the finishing touches on the big building there. justin good morning. >> aaron, good morning. it's a matter of time. we've been here for some six hours here and now we're nearing some 11 hours counting down to opening night. and i can tell you that staff have been working here around the clock here, trying to get this place ready by 11:00 p.m. as the clock counts down to opening night, the rush to be ready ramps up inside mgm national harbor. to the rhythm of live guitar, crews moved in sync pushing mops across floors and setting up restaurant table tops, falling into place hours before crowds arrive. >> i've been looking at it on my floor for a year. to climb up on my ladder and

thousands of people to show up and make their way inside. back in to you. >> justin, thank you. the man poised to become the next d.c. schools chancellor is at the wilson building right now. antoine wilson is at a public meeting. the education committee is talking about his readiness for the job, wilson was formerly the superintendant of oakland unified school district. the d.c. council is expected to approve him later this month. today you're going to have a chance to weigh in on the future superintendant for falls church schools. the school board wants parents to explain what kind of qualifications and characteristics they're looking for in a district leader. the meeting is at 7:00 p.m. at thomas jefferson elementary school on oak street. people stood in the cold for hours overnight for a chance to get an affordable apartment in southeast d.c. news4's megan mcgrath has been out there for a few hours. megan, how important is this opportunity for folks who are

behind me here, you can see that the line has gone down at this point. but earlier this morning, hundreds of people turned out to get their names on a waiting list for affordable housing units here at the orchard park apartments in southeast. people waiting in line say there is a housing crisis, that there jnt aren't enough affordable places to live in the district. the sign says no lines before 8:00 a.m. a request that was ignored. affordab to find in the district. people hoping to get a unit and a break on the rent braved the cold and spent the night in line. >> it's very important because it's very hard. and to find affordable housing, especially in d.c. with d.c., it's very high for living. >> because it's extremely hard. i've been on housing waiting lists for ten years now. >> orchard park apartments in southeast is accepting 200 applications for low-income housing units. for sonia winder, getting an

life-changing. >> well i've been here since july back from florida. and i've been in seven places, living with seven different people and it's nothing like your own and i'm still living with someone right now. >> demand is great and there's no guarantee that the long wait will pay off. especially for those at the end of the line. those here say it's a chance worth taking. >> it's hard everywhere. the whole d.c. maryland virginia area. you see how long this line is. >> good morning. >>as hand. >> at 9:00 a.m., the rental office started taking applications, this is just the first step in a long process. dawn fox knows, she was on a waiting list for two years before getting an apartment. she says the mayor needs to do something. >> why is this line two miles long, but there's no line in the million-dollar properties going up downtown. has somebody forgotten one of

d.c.? and that's its people. >> now people in line have to fill out the application. they also have to show proof of insurance, proof of income, proof of need and then they're put on a waiting list. now speaking to someone with the management firm. they are saying that it takeser in on average from 12 to 18 months to actually get a unit for unit to become available and for folks to move in. so it is a very long back to you in the studio. >> megan, thank you. this morning a judge postponed the hearing for edgar welch, until december 13th, to give the extra time to the defense team and welch's family, which is traveling to d.c. from north carolina. welch is accused of firing a gun inside the comet ping pong pizza restaurant on sunday. he claims he was investigating a fake news story referred to as

>> a jailhouse interview was published. he said welch learned about the fake news through word of mouth and then found it online. >> he started drilling down on this and thought there was more evidence that was real. i asked him if he discussed it with ebb in. he said he discussed it with his family. they seemed to think there was evidence that there was i guess children were being harbored at this pizza place. >> these photos are from we's he's facing three felony charges, including assault with a deadly weapon and a misdemeanor gun charge. a local soldier is dead, more than three weeks after he was injured in a suicide attack in afghanistan. sergeant first-class allen brown died on tuesday at walter reed military hospital. he was from takoma park. brown was injured when militants attacked bagram air field. a suicide bomber got on to the base and targeted a crowd getting ready for a post veteran's day fun run.

also killed. this morning we're working to learn if a truck driver will face charges in a deadly crash in frederick. first 4 traffic brought you this as breaking news yesterday morning. 40-year-old ross michaels died after a tractor-trailer driver lost control and crashed into his car where i-70 meets i-270. maryland state police say the truck driver couldn't slow down in time, and hit his brakes abruptly. michaels was the father of two children, he was headed home after picking up a computer from his and paramedics had to take ten people to the hospital after a metro bus hit a car. the crash happened in southeast d.c. last night. just before 7:00. when the w 4 bus was turning on to south capitol street from malcolm x boulevard. police say no one was seriously injured in that accident. hillary clinton will make an appearance on capitol hill today, she will attend and speak at the portrait unveiling for senate democratic leader harry reid. he's retiring at the end of this session of congress.

hillary clinton's public appearances have been rare since last month. michigan's recount of the election is order. a federal judge lifted an order that forced a statewide review of millions of ballots, the judge said he must follow a decision by the state appeals court that found that green party candidate jill stein had no legal standing to request the recount. the decision clinches donald trump's win over hillary clinton in that state. stein is vowing that she will appeal the decision. and president-elect donald trump will he'll visit ohio state university to meet with the victims and first responders to last month's attack there. then he'll head to iowa for his thank you tour. news4's tracie potts has that story. >> president-elect trump meets with another candidate today for secretary of state. retired navy admiral james derides. >> i think next week will be the time i announce it. >> there's concern his administration is stacked with former military leaders and

business administration. >> yeah, at a certain point you want you know, you don't want everybody coming from the same background i don't think we've hit that yet. >> president obama and bush actually appointed more generals, the latest for trump? retired general john kelly. sources tell nbc he'll be nominated to lead the department of homeland security. trump's national security adviser, retired general mike flynn met with his former obama counterpart susan rice gracious, it was a superb meeting. >> democrats are concerned trump may cut medicare and medicaid. >> we're going to mobilize, expose and defeat republicans deeply damaging scheme to end medicare. >> mr. trump, we are going to hold you accountable. >> and confirmed this morning, oklahoma's attorney general scott pruitt is mr. trump's choice for administrator of the epa.

we are hearing an update from one of the nbc news correspondents. near the scene. telling us that that man that you just saw there, michel lembrick may be holed up in a house in rural georgia. we understand authorities to be at that location. there was a $70,000 reward for his arrest. there was a number of agencies that were teaming up to try bring this person into custody. again, this is the man that police say shot two of their officers, killing one of them. there have been a large manhunt under way. it appears they may have this man, minquell lembrick cornered at a home in rural georgia we'll monitor the situation and bring you developments. we turn to south carolina now, where an escaped inmate is on the run and he's now accused

williamson attacked the officer inside a walmart in columbia last night. she was responding to reports of a shoplifter. she is expected to recover. it's not clear right now how williamson escaped. columbia police say they'll have another update on this late they are morning. new information we're working to learn why this car went up in flames at a gas station this morning. you take look at this dramatic video, there are pillars of flame and smoke pouring into the the air here at the exxon on on itself was totally safe. in this video, brazilian soccer player allen rochell, thanks his supporters and tells them he'll be back in brazil soon. he's being treated in colombia after being injured in a plane crash that killed 71 other people. the victims included other players, coaches, journalists and the aircraft crew. the team was traveling to play in the finals of a south american tournament. americans are not living

and dr. jennifer sokolosky who was a patient yesterday. how did you find out about it? >> one of the problems that i've had as a dentist, you wear loupes all day long. the little magnifiers, after you take them off and you had to read the computer screen to see the next procedure or your notes, you're unable to do that. you need to deglove, put your glasses on, reglo loupe back on. >> she came to you as a patient and told you she wanted some way and you said she could get contact lenses, right? >> we did talk about contact lenses, but we also talked about a new fda-approved procedure, called raindrop. we could be the first in the d.c. area to be performing it on december 7th. which was yesterday and she said sign me up. >> you saw her yesterday, now

other, the opposite. they work on people who can't see distances, correct in. >> so lasix does distance vision and so far we haven't had anything to do, reading very well. at the same time. and so jennifer actually had both. you know so she had a little bit of distance issue that we fixed in one eye yesterday and then the other eye we used this new raindrop procedure, so that, so that she can now actually read today. >> this is pretty exciting. >> 150,000, i saw the list of people like tiger woods and many, many other very famous people who have come here to washington to get the lasix procedure. how would you rank this in terms of important things happening in the eye field especially? >> as you know there are a few people who are over 40 years old. until now we really haven't had anything that could, that could do this within one day, of someone turning around and being

back and take care of teeth today. >> now dr. rose, you told me that a lot of people will come in with problems like this and you say these days, there's something for everybody, right? >> there's a safe refracturive procedure for almost everybody. they need to be screened appropriately and counseled on their visual needs, their age and the health of their eyes. >> watching this yesterday was pretty exciting. those of us who happened to be in the surgical suite with you. were standing there like we were being the first time. you weren't nervous at all. >> not a bit. >> why not? >> complete confidence. >> i guess you're used to things like that. >> it's a relatively painless procedure so the procedure works well, it's quick. it's about 10-15 minutes and we're done. >> there are a lot of us who probably need it. and i'm sure you'll probably be hearing from a the although of people. but thank you so much for sharing this experience with us.

from texas, so -- i'm so proud of my fellow texan at 8:00 last night. so many people were on their phones live-tweeting the tv debut of "hairspray live" star-studded cast. including jennifer hudson. harvey firestein, kristen chenowith and maddie ballio, a newcomer to the scene. never been on broadway before, never been on tv before. let me show you a couple of the twet all over social media there you saw jennifer hudson this somehow big it was, snapchat had its own filter of tracy turnblad that you could put on any one of your pictures. and my wigs are this nice and there was a great one talking about how well did jennifer hudson do, they passed out in excitement over the fact that she was on there. wonderful show last night on nbc, barbara and aaron, back to you. a lot of fun to watch for

today stocks are off to a mixed start. but the dow, s&p and the nasdaq are still staying pretty high. a german grocery store chain still has not built its first store in our area. but it is showing signs of expansion. lidl is holding it's first hiring event next week. first d.c. area stores are expected to open no later than 2018. th starting next year, you can go on united's basic economy fare. but your options will be bare bones, when you get the fare you won't be allowed to use the overhead bins on the plane. only carry-ones that can fit under your seat. you won't be able to pick your seat. it's assigned the day you take off. and you'll still pay an extra fee if you need to check a bag,

because of the cold and winds it will be a weather alert day. we'll keep it dry saturday and sunday. tomorrow, a high of 41 degrees, mostly to partly sunny skies and it will be blustery tomorrow from start to finish. so again at 7:00 a.m. it feels like we're in the teens and 20s. feeling about 21 in washington. 15 in gaithersburg, make sure the kids are bundled at the bus stop. as we move toward the midday hours, it feels like we're near 30 degrees, feeling much cooler than today. about a 20-degree the afternoon hours and tomorrow night as you head out for your friday night. you'll want the warm jacket, the scarf maybe and the gloves with temperatures feeling like they're generally in the 20s. now still a little bit breezy, but not as windy on saturday. look at the high, only 39. not much better on sunday, a high of 42. some showers looking likely on monday. take a look at thursday and friday of next week. a high of only 33 on thursday

well now we're seeing more and more people picking up that hobby. and john moorehead, director of the national home brew competition is here with a look at a capitol hill competition that's happening this week or happened yesterday, right? >> absolutely. >> tell us all about it and welcome. >> thank you for having me, barbara. >> how did that happen and do they have these competitions all over the country? >> yes, so competitions happen all over the country. this competition was created through our federal affairs brainchild. her idea was to have recognize the hillstaffers on capitol hill. and have them submit home brews. >> and are there a lot of them who do that in. >> yes. we had 14 entries, which was more than some other, some expected. and we hope to continue to grow the competition and promote the hobby of home brewing. >> there is a home brewers

association has been around since 1978. we just celebrated our 30th anniversary yesterday. which was very cool. started by charlie papasian and charlie matson. >> how many members do you have? >> 46,000 members. >> and how do people get started with it? one of their kids give them a hoe brew kit and they just say oh -- >> something like this. kind of so this is a one-gallon kit from three stars home brewing shop and local home brew shop in d.c. you would starth extract kit that makes one gallon. you would start with malt extract. which is made from malted barley and then you would boil water, soak these specialty grains. >> what are the grains? >> specialty grains to allow new flavors to the beer. so instead of making a pale ale, you would use different ingredients. >> where are the hops? >> hops are right here, actually. >> these are the hops, they're packaged, sealed tight. vacuum tight to not allow any

the nasdaq rising 60, to 5393. amazon says not so fast. days after "the wall street journal" reported the online retailer plans to have more than 2,000 brick-and-mortar grocery stores, the company says that's not true. a amazon spokesperson said we have no plans to open 2,000 of anything. that could cause concerns that that move would put thousands of grocery workers out of a job.
