with meteorologist amelia draper with a check of the forecast. >> it's cold out there. so many people weighing in and saying it's freezing outside. it's not actually freezing. but when you factor in the winds, that is how it's feeling right now. we're at 37 degrees. and look at the winds, coming out of the northwest at about 18 miles per hour. so when you add in the winds, this is how cold it's feeling right now. feeling like we're in the 20s across the area. about 27 in washington, 22 in frederick and o 19 degrees back in winchester. the good news, we have plenty of sunshine in the forecast and we will keep it mainly dry today. but look at how it's going to feel at 8:00 p.m. this evening. a as you head out to dinner or holiday parties, feels like temperatures in the 20s. so make sure you bundle up. i'll be walking through your saturday, hour by hour and letting you know how cold it's going to be tomorrow. thanks amelia. i'm melissa mollet at the

information on a suspect or a motive right now. meanwhile, the community is rallying around comet ping pong pizza in the northwest. today neighbors are being encouraged to visit the pizzaria. you can share messages of support on social media using the hashtag #stand with comet. on sunday a man fired a gun inside that restaurant. edgar welch says he was investigating a fake news story called incident, while one shot at least one shot was fired, nobody was hurt. today the man accused of killing his estranged wife in ashburn will be sentenced. yesterday a judge rejected a motion to set aside the guilty verdict against bralio castillo. a jury recommended a life sentence plus 16 years. it was back in 2014, castillo broke into his estranged wife's

like it was a suicide. six years after two women were raped at montgomery college, their attacker is being sentenced today. that's right, this video we have shows nathaniel hart in the blue-and-white beanie looking for potential victims. this is at the takoma park campus on january 26 of 2010. prosecutors say he locked a victim inside a rest room and raped her repeatedly. hart was previously sentenced to 90 years in prison after pleading he then appealed, and after a new trial, this past october, he's now facing a three life terms. and today is the funeral for a murdered 16-year-old girl from d.c. brianna mcmillan was shot and killed in southeast, the day after thanksgiving. through a gofundme page, her family raised almost $10,000 to pay for her funeral. police identified save evans as

brianna's murder. police say evans was caught on surveillance video firing a gun around the time she was killed. so far, all he's been charged with is unlawful gun possession. developing this morning, hundreds of workers in our area are about to be looking for new jobs. the washington business journal reports the kane company is going out of business and according to the journal, the financial problems started last year, the kane company operates office movers and several similar businesses,o as 1,000 employees could lose their jobs. the company's owner says their pensions and their 401(k)s will be paid. happening today -- a pennsylvania court is expected to decide whether the state's presidential votes should be recounted. green party presidential candidate jill stein filed suit claiming that the state's voting system is out of date and vulnerable to hacking. the state's 20 electoral votes

candidate hillary clinton made her first appearance on capitol hill yesterday. since the election. clinton was there to honor senate minority leader harry reid who is retiring. the former secretary of state jokes she was glad to be invited to the event after spending weeks hiking in the woods. >> but after a few weeks of taking selfies in the woods, i thought it would be -- a good idea to come out. and i'm very grateful to harry for inviting mebe this celebration. >> during her speech, clinton took some time to talk about the danger of fake news and its real-world consequences. she compelled congress to pass bipartisan legislation, to deal with the issue. and president-elect donald trump is in louisiana today, he'll be in michigan for a thank you rally on his tour tonight. nbc's tracie potts shows us how trump's cabinet is shaping up

under way to prevent protesters during the inauguration weekend. the "guardian" reports the national park service is blocking planned rallies in front of the lincoln memorial and other landmarks along the national mall. it's filed a blocking permit for weeks leading up to and after trump's inauguration. organizers for the women's march on washington have said they are working on other plans. the facebook event says more than 227,000 people are there's more on "news4 midday." just ahead -- a look back at the life of famous senate and senator john glenn.

john glenn, an american space pioneer, patriot and politician, has passed away at the age of 95. mark barger takes a >> most of america met john glenn in 1959. the newly formed nasa, named him one of america's seven original astronauts. he made history in 1962, blasting into space, aboard "friendship 7." glenn became the first american to orbit the earth, circling three times before his capsule came down in the atlantic ocean. he returned to a hero's welcome

outside of their neighborhoods. the deputy chief of early education at d.c. public schools joins us with more on what people need to know. good morning, thanks so much for joining us. so i want to you start by telling us a little bit about who can apply. who should be attending these programs. >> so any parent of a 3-year-old or 4-year-old, who will be three by september 30th, can enter the lottery. what they do is go on the can see all kinds of different school profiles and choose a school that they think will be a good match for their child. and then list their various preferences. >> so this happens on monday. >> yes. >> that they can start applying. and i don't have children personally. i have friends that have children and i hear them talk all the time about the d.c. school lottery system and how challenging it is. to get in and get their kids in the school that they really want. we're talking about little kids. three years old.

>> so what is happening in the very early years, is that kids' brains are developing very rapidly. and so if we can get them into high-quality early childhood programs like our classrooms at dcps, then that child has an opportunity to have their minds stimulated in all kinds of different ways. >> when parents are thinking about what is the right program for their particular child, perhaps i mean they're three, seeing exactly what their full potential is. what type of programs should they be looking into? how do they gauge what is best for their child in. >> first, parents know their kids better than anyone. so they really need to be thinking about who their child is. and then through that lens, look at the different school options. so for example, if they know that their child loves playing outside and getting their hands in the dirt and fascinating by the outdoors, then they should look at, look for a school that has a garden program.

example, cw harris in ward 8 has an amazing garden program. the kids are actually involved in planting. and then every week they have a farmer's market that families participate in. >> and language i'm sure is another one of those special programs. >> we have several dual-language programs where kids can learn spanish and english. arabic and english. and then they should also look at the curriculum. so every dcps early childhood classroom is guided by research-based curriculum. we have three, one the mind. and that really focuses on cultivating independent learners, we have creative curriculum, all about project-based learning. so kids are learning literacy and science and math. they're learning it by for example exploring trees and in all kinds of different ways. and then the montessori program is a very child-centered. >> we've got to go, but one more question, if parents start applying on monday, by when do they know and how many kids will be accepted?

this, though. this one dad out of west virginia, i think he took it a little too far. he turned himself into the real-life elf on a shelf. >> i never did that. >> so he sat on the roof at wayne county elementary school and he had the whole outfit. look at the faces on the kids. the dad says it was pretty cold up there. but the looks on the kids' faces, i think say it all, like dad, get down if there and don't ever do that again. their frinds to know it was their dad. christmas greetings have a special way of warming our hearts this time of year. >> but it's especially true for a young cancer patient in north carolina. 5-year-old hayden drake has spent most of the year battling leukemia. for christmas he had one simple wish -- to get a whole bunch of cards with his name on them. and his mom felt obliged to you know make that happen for him. and word got out and he started

five cards in the mail and he did a little happy dance. and he was doing a happy dance the whole time he was reading the cards. >> and there is some good news, haten is in remission from his cancer. but he will still need chemotherapy treatments for the next three years. good luck to him. we have -- cold weather out there. >> yes, it's cold. >> people are getting colds in >> including myself. but seemingly nonstop this year. it's so frustrating, but it is very cold outside. it's the coldest it's been so far this season. because of that it's the storm team 4 weather alert day. look at the current temperatures right now. we're coming in in the 30s. mid to upper 30s across the area. 37 right now in washington, but the thing is, is it's blustery out there you look outside your window, it's deceiving, you're seeing plenty of sunshine, but with the winds it's feeling about ten degrees cooler.

right now arlington police investigating a crash involving a pedestrian. look at the video we just got in. it happened around 9:30 this morning near washington boulevard in arlington and north stafford street. near washington lee high school. right now we're working to get more information about exactly who was hit and their we get it. thanks very much, melissa. time is running out for lawmakers to prevent a government shutdown. >> senators are debating the spending bill right now on capitol hill. so they need to come to an agreement on a spending bill by midnight. the house already passed a stop-gap measure to keep the government funded until april. the hang-up in the senate, some democrats are upset the bill does not include long-term

as a result the senate might not be able to vote on the spending bill until sometime this weekend. technically, putting the government into a partial shutdown on saturday. president obama has sent a letter to congress asking for a 2.1% pay raise for civilian federal employees. that amount would replace the previous proposed amount of 1.6%, would match that of defense department employees. according to our news partners at the delivered yesterday, a day after d.c.-area democratic members of congress wrote to the president asking for the increase. >> there will be a presidential recount hearing today in wisconsin, a federal judge will decide if the recount can move forward or not. donald trump defeated hillary clinton by more than 22,000 votes in that state. jill stein requested the recount to determine if election machines had been hacked.

>> in michigan, people gathered outside the state supreme court demanding a recount. on wednesday a federal judge shut down that process. protesters argued that irregularities uncovered during the recount provide proof that minority voters may have been disenfranchised. >> either the polls were wrong or there was some kind of large-scale fraud. and we're never going to know which of those is true unless we look at the evidence now. reforms to michigan's voting system. looking ahead to decision 2017, this morning one less person is competing to become virginia's governor. congressman rob whitman dropped out. he said he can do more for is virginia by staying in congress. three republicans are still hoping to become the gop nominee. and they include prince william board of supervisors chairman, cory stewart.

>> that was one of my questions for you. how are you going to surprise us this weekend? >> because i get tired of doing the same christmas music every year, i'm always looking for different holiday songs you know with the different feel or might not be as familiar. so there's a few little bon-bones in there and some great sing-along material for the audience to really get involved. we do music by mariah carey, dolly parton, "feliz navidad" an songs at the end. it's great fun for the whole family. >> laura, you probably don't do concerts very often. you're a proudway stage actress. >> haven't done a broadway show for three years since i left "cinderella" i've actually been doing mainly concerts. >> and i know you do a lot of writing and composing as well. do you like doing these concerts? >> any time i get an opportunity to sing with an orchestra, i'll

the school, right? >> yes. >> and a lot of them get their first chance to see the ballet when they come for the nutcracker. >> with orchestra, it's important. >> a live orchestra. and all of these amazingly beautiful costumes. so when kids come and see it, they go home and say i want to do that? >> yes. >> and that's one of the ways they come to the show. >> every one of these kids -- >> we were one of these kids and we worked really hard ando >> we're seeing some of the show now. tell us about the program. >> okay. so i'm dancing the role of the snow queen and this is my snow king and we take clara, who is here, she's with us, we take her to the snow and we also take her to the land of the sweets. >> how do kids get selected from the school to be part of the show? >> they audition in june over the summer and our director looks at them and she decides

they work through the fall. >> and were you guys all excited about having parts this year? >> yes. we're so glad you could come and see us, you look absolutely beautiful. tell us when the show will be on stage at the hilton theater. >> we start december 15th through the 23rd. and are there still tickets available? >> yes, can you get tickets at manassas ballet.org and they start at $25 and we're at the right off of i-66 and free parking. >> and you have to get out of school to do this? or do you go to school and dance after that? >> you get out, i guess you'd have to. >> we are so thrilled to have you here and to be in these fabulous costumes and we, would say break a leg, but we don't want you to do that. have a great performance and folks you know they're at the hilton theater, tickets still available for that run that's coming up shortly.

>> this is a water mallon, i want to say like a gift basket you know, just for the holiday season. this is one of the some of the carvings that i did you know while i was on food network. i wanted to show a little bit of that. and you can carve fruit out of anything. you can carve them in flowers, you can put cantalopes. you veggie carvings are great. i wanted to teach you a few of it how to do it. what are we going to do today? >> a cucumber flower. i brought you a knife, one for you to try. >> you want me to try it? >> yes. >> what do i do here. >> can you grab a nice and then we're going to make a mark on the cucumber.

bottom, this side. >> so just start to do this. >> and then you want to overlap it a little bit. you want to try to make sure you get like five out of that. and then you can keep overlapping it. and as i'm doing this i'm looking at myself and thinking people must wonder why i'm wearing two watches, one is an iphone watch a >> so when you finish you can just twist it at the bottom, now you have a flower. >> and then on a regular day i would put a carrot in there with a toothpick. just for the holidays, you want the holiday colors, you can get a strawberry. >> that looks easier than i thought. >> easy tricks that you can do with different. >> erica.

wall street's post-election rally could roll on today. the dow now 500 closing at new record highs yesterday, helped by the energy, industrial and tech sectors. the dow has posted record closes 13 times since the election. we get data today on consumer sentiment. the dow is now at 19,614, the nasdaq up 23 to 5417. the department of transportation is proposing airlines be allowed to let passengers be allowed to make in-flight phone calls, despite
