of weather is going to last on through the day tomorrow, right on through the day on sunday. we'll get a little break before it comes back again, and it comes back even colder than what we're dealing with right now. let's look at the windchills around the mid-atlantic because this is some frigid air. 27, the current windchill, d.c., 23, gaithersburg. 17, pittsburgh, and 19 to roanoke. extremely cold for this time of year. our average high is 50 degrees and it feels about half of that right now. current temperature, 35 degrees at the airport. temperature s dropping, and one word describes it all, cold, cold, and cold. that's what we'll be throughout the night. if you're heading out, make sure you bundle up. tomorrow morning, more of the same. windchills in the teens early tomorrow morning. that's what we're watching here. we're going to watch this pattern. much more stormy pattern as we head into the neck week. so fribbligid tonight. a cold weekend all the way through the day on sunday. sunday tracking a system to bring us rain on monday,

refused to accept u.s. intelligence assessments that russia interfered with the election. >> a surprise today from the trump transition. late today, we learned that rudy giuliani no longer a contender for the cabinet. he took himself out of the running ten days ago. edward lawrence is tracking this from capitol hill. >> wendy, rudy giuliani says this isn't about him. it's what's best for the country and the new administration. meanwhile, donald trump is trying to help himself on capitol hill here, in louisiana, with louisiana senate run-off eleshz. right now, republicans hold a slim majority in the senate. but that would go a long way to help his agenda if he could get one more republican in place. trying to get one more republican senator elected to congress, donald trump went to louisiana to help john kennedy win saturday's run-off election. this as trusted campaign adviser rudy giuliani removes his name from consideration for secretary

important place for giuliani in his administration some time in the future. one selection expected soon will add another woman to the cabinet, reportedly washington state representative cathy mcmorris rodgers will be named interior secretary, criticism increased today for tapping fast food ceo andy puzder as treasury secretary. >> donald trump has kind of given a big middle finger to that department. >> a coalition emerged to block trump's promise to repeal obamacare and instead make changes. >> it's clear he's movable. the question is whether the people he's appointing are going to help make this happen. >> one union seems to be moving towards calming the twitter war with the president-elect. today, indiana united steel workers boss chuck jones said he would still work with trump after being verbally attacked by him online. >> if trump is sincere about keeping jobs in the country and you heard him numerous times,

casino gets ready for its first big weekend. a very busy day there. we want to start with the arrest, though. you talked with charles caldwell this afternoon. what did he have to say about this? >> well, one of the things he said is that he should have taken an uber. charles caldwell has been on the prince george's county liquor board for some time. in the last year or so, became chair of that board, and he said that he believes that what police thought was a dui was him not being steady on his feet because of his age. he told me, you know, i'm going to be 73 in a few days. and you know, a little hard for me to get around. he said that he believes that the test police did was inconclusive. but as we know, prince george's county police have confirmed they charged him with dui, and he is going to have to face the charges. police say it was a three-vehicle accident. caldwell described it to me as a minor fender bender that barely left any damage on his vehicle. we doknow that everyone walked away from the accident withoutgy

major injuries. but that's under investigation. this all comes after what mgm is calling a successful grand opening yesterday, with lots of people. in fact, too many people. now they're asking folks, if you don't have reservations, to come and see them another weekend. mgm national harbor is considering last night's grand opening a grand success. but there was one incident reported inside of the casino. a fight that lasted for a couple minutes, didn't result in any arrests because the man who was beaten did not press charges. >> we're not new at this. we operate large facilities in las vegas and elsewhere. we have very experienced professionals watching over both our guests and our employees at all times. >> the issue was quickly handled by security and the evening carried on. now -- >> thank you. >> for guests who have reservations at the hotel --

judge sentenced a speeding driver who killed three members of a bethesda family. that crash happened in february near walt whitman high school where the family was heading to watch a play. chris gordon is in bethesda with the message prosecutors want parents and especially young drivers to hear. chris. >> well, we're reporting tonight from the scene of the fatal accident. river road, turning on to pyle road. and the message prosecutors want this 12-year sentence to be sent to the community is that parents need to take responsibility. this young driver had a record of speeding violations and arrests. and they say despite his recklessness, he always was given the family car keys. prosecutors say he was driving his father's turbo charges bmw at 115 miles per hour just seconds before the crash.

21-year-old smashed into the side of the chevy volt crossing river to pyle road, with a family heading to walt whitman high school on a saturday evening in february. >> i think the message is to parents, be a parent. you know, and take the -- make the tough decision. i think that the weapon of choice, this was a bullet. this was a missile going down the street. >> michael and alessandra were killed on the scene along with their 18-year-old son thomas. only 16-year-old helena survived. after she came out of a coma, she was told her whole family was gone. before his sentencing in court, he sobbed and shook visibly, saying i truly regret my selfishness. i am forever sorry to helena for taking away the people closest to her. the judge sentenced him to 30 years, suspending all but 12, saying you

at bullet speed. his defense attorney says he takes full responsibility. his family is taking the 12-year prison sentence very hard. >> i think the last thing i heard was his mother scream as he was being taken away. that she loved him. >> now, this fatal accident caused some bethesda residents to push for a traffic light here at this intersection, calling it dangerous, but as you can see tonight, there is still no signal. wendy, back to you. >> chris gordon, thank you. >> the government runs out of money at midnight, less than six hours from shutdown. the house passed a temporary spending bill yesterday then went home for the holidays. then came a last-minute snag. on the senate side. west virginia senator joe manchin is leading a democratic revolt. he just spoke on the senate floor. he's pushing for a longer extension of health benefits

hundreds of people are holding an eat-in at the d.c. restaurant at the center of what is known as pizza gate. a line stretched down the street outside comet ping-pong in northwest d.c. today. organizers on facebook encouraged the community to come out to support the neighborhood

conspiracy theory led to a man firing a gun inside the shop last weekend. customers are calling on the incoming trump administration to denounce fake news. >> we have a neighbor down the street, vice president-elect mike pence, who lives not too far away. i think if this administration is serious about standing up to this fake news epidemic, i would like to see him come here and show his support for comet pizza and all the surrounding businesses. >> there has been an outpouring of support on social media for the restaurant. people posting with th the #standwithcomet. >> and the north carolina man charged with firing those shots inside comet will be in court again next week. edgar madison welch talked to a "new york times" reporter from jail. goldman says welch told him he just wanted to check out the restaurant but became upset when he was driving to d.c. and something in him flipped. he also said he believed the false, unfounded reports that a child sex ring wasbe

welch is now facing two felony charges. >> and this week, a member of the presidential transition team was fired for some social media posts involving that fabricated news about the comet ping-pong. >> the son of the man donald trump has selected to be his national security adviser, retired general mike flynn. "meet the press" moderator chuck todd joins us now. general flynn came under a lot of fire, but nothing from the trump administration denouncing fake news. >> not quite, but one thing i would note is the sound of silence on trump administration officials standing by mike flynn. very publicly. they haven't thrown him under the bus, but they're not exactly -- they're exactly overly defending him either. i had kellyanne conway on mtp dale a, because there's been other military leaders very concerned about mike flynn, what's going on here. barry mccaffrey expressed skepticism, giving voice to other rank and filein

military concerned about mike flynn's judgment. and i have to say, look, you can read between the lines, but again, kellyanne conway was saying he has a fine career. this person has a stellar record as an intelligence officer. >> the father. >> the father, but was -- i would say, very careful not to overly defend him. and i think -- i have to tell you, if you follow trump closely, when staffers accumulate controversial -- too much controversial press, they're usually out. they don't last long. happened to corey lewandowski, paul manafort, the second campaign manager. from my understanding talking to sources, mike flynn knows it could be trouble. >> about this fake news, why doesn't trump come out and denounce it? does it -- does he hurt some of his base when he does that? is he walking a fine line here? what's he doing? >> i don't know what his motive is for not denouncing it. but i can tell you, when you watch a lot of his

news was when the mainstream media didn't say he had a chance. that's fake news. all this stuff. i think they're playing a dangerous game of conflating. incorrect analysis and trying to conflate and say, oh, yeah, there's the media complaining again. i think they always want to create, look, i think in donald trump's mind, he doesn't mind if there is doubt planted in the public about mainstream media. i think he sees that as a helpful foil to him. and i think that's what makes covering him a challenge. let's be honest. >> he likes his twitter. >> there's that, too. he talks directly, but i think, you know, the fact that they have used the tactic of trying tocondplat fake news with incorrect analysis, that certainly happened during the campaign, we know what they're trying to do. >> chuck, what about the rudy giuliani news. he seemed like he wanted to be secretary of state. now he's out of the

storm, in the storm. there you are. >> it's a cold storm. that's all we got out there right now. no snow or rainstorms anytime soon, at least for the next couple days. we'll be dry, but what we will see is the continuation of the cold air out there right now, frigid. on frigid friday. 35 degrees. winds out of the west at 12 miles per hour. notice just how low the windchills are already. here we are at 6:00 in the afternoon, and 17, the current windchill. gaithersburg. 21. frederick, 28. culpepper at 30. a very cold evening, and it's going to continue to be. no chance of rain anytime soon, but you take a look. just at the wider picture here, and look what's happening up here toward the lake. the lake effect snow machine is on. i saw one report in parts of new york of 22 inches of snow. been amazing how much snow we have seen. we have seven seen no in places like portland and seattle, and the cold air will continue to be here for us as well.

now at 6:30, nbc news has learned a spending bill to keep the government running past midnight is likely to pass later tonight. a last-minute democratic revolt over miners health benefits appears to be resolved at least until january. >> changes are likely changing to the way companies like airbnb work in part of our region. how it could impact the thousands of you renting out your homes. >> and apple is moving into the historic carnegie library. what the store might look like and what will happen to all the green space around that building. >> first in virginia, though, a 12-year-old boy lashes out in an angry letter, urging a judge to give his father a life sentence for killing his mother. >> the judge sentenced the man to life plus 16 years today. for killing his estranged wife michelle, the mother of five. bureau chief julie carey joins us from the courtho

leesburg with the dramatic moments that unfolded in court. >> well, also, wendy, there's word already tonight that his attorney that he plans to appeal his murder conviction and life sentence. case tee tillo showed no emotio court, bit his wife's friends wept as several of the charn talked about what their mom's death has meant in their young lives. >> nick castillo, the oldest of the five castillo children, leaving court after seeing his dad sent to prison for life. he and his sister testified today about the enormous loss of their mother michelle. but nick admits the judge's decision creates some mixed emotions. >> it's a bittersweet moment for me, to be completely honest. not just because i have lost my mom, but i have always lost my daughter in a very weird, odd way to say that. but i'm completely okay with the fact that he gets this because that's what he deserved. >> castillo has maintained his innocence all

couple's children are made it clear they believe their father killed their mom. that view stated powerfully today in a letter from 12-year-old jonathan castillo and read in court by their foster mom. jonathan believes his dad tried to use him in his murder plot, asking him for a garage security code, wrote jonathan, you have no idea what you did to your children. you denied you murdered mom, and that's another lie. you know you did it. i know you did it. we all know it. you need to pay for what you've done and be punished for life. they were estranged and involved in a divorce and custody battle in march of 2014 when she was found in her home, hanging from a shower. prosecutors say her death was staged to look like a suicide. today, they urged the judge to impose the stiff sentence recommended by the jury, so that the castillo children would never have to fear their father's release. >> these children should be able to close the chapter, grieve their mother without having to worry if he's going to come home or contact them. >> but nick castillo said there

to speak to his father again. >> it's going to take time for my wife and i to decide, you know, for us to really say you know, we forgive him. we'll talk to him, not all the time, not every month, but every once in a while. >> and something very interesting in the courtroom today that we don't see very often in this case. several of the jurors, in fact, more than half of them who decided castillo's fate earlier in the summer, came to court today. some of them even wearing orange, that was the victim's favorite color. they say they are relieved that the judge imposed their recommended life sentence. back to you in the studio. >>julie. >> a final good-bye to a 16-year-old girl who was shot and killed in the district. brianna was hit by a stray bullet the day after thanksgiving at the potomac gardens housing complex in southeast. she was home from boarding school for the holiday. her family raised nearly $10,000 online to pay

and at that service today, they called on the community to end this violence. >> brianna would want for people to put down their guns and love one another instead of hating one another. love. put the guns down. and say i love you. >> one thing that we're going to do as a family, we want to put out for everyone to lay down their guns. guns don't kill people. people kill people. she died a senseless death. she didn't have to die the way she did. >> police have identified a person of interest in brianna's murder. evans was caught on surveillance video firing a gun around the time she was killed. he has been arrested and he is charged with unlawful gun possession and more charges could follow. >> as the senate debated that government spending bill earlier today, several lawmakers offered tributes to former senator and astronaut john glenn. glenn was the first american to

shuttle "discovery." he served as a democratic senator from ohio for 24 years. >> such a storied career of what john glenn gave to america. restoring our faith and our own space program. riving his life to prove we could move forward into space, serving the state of ohio and the national as united states senator for four terms. he was just an extraordinary man. >> he described his childhood as being like something out of a normal rockwell painting. but as we all know, his life was anything but ordinary. >> john glenn died yesterday at a hospital in ohio where he had been hospitalized for more than a week. he was 95 years old. >> the seeds are planted for a new apple store downtown. the plan is to locate the store in the historic carnegie library. mark segraves shows us what that building will look like after the transformation from a library to an

>> it opened in 1903 and hasn't been used as a library since the 1970s. the carnegie library has had several transformations over the years. the district-owned building is now used for private parties. and is home to the historical society of washington. events d.c. which manages the building approved a proposal to lease the majority of the building to apple for a new flagship retail store. max brown, chair of events d.c., says it's a win for the building and the district. because apple will be making a big investment. >> updating it, renovating, number one, is important. number two, we're going to create jobs. >> this won't be the first time apple has transformed an historic building into a modern store. they have hired the same firm that designed its stores in san francisco and london. one concern is a retail store wanting to put parking spaces on what is now a park. >> the green space will

green space. >> for colby stewart, while she uses apple products, the carnegie has a special place in her memory. it was home to her prom. >> i don't think it should be a flagship store for apple because it's a national landmark. it's history in this building. it shouldn't be made for an apple store. >> lots of details still have to be worked out, so we're about two years away from a store actually opening here. as for the historical society, they have a lease that goes for about another 80 years. the executive director says he thinks this is a great opportunity for the society and the library. and you might recall that we reported the building has a mold problem a few months ago. that's still being remediated. at the d.c. carnegie library, mark segraves, news 4. >> a local mosque at the center of a national conversation, as leaders address a spike in hate crimes after the presidential election. >> proposed changes to airbnb and other short term

attorney general loretta lynch will be visiting a mosque in louden county next week to address the spike in hate crimes targeting muslims. on monday, lynch will visit the all dulles area muslim society center in sterling. the fbi says hate crimes against muslims spiked 67% last year. the highest number since the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 terror attacks. >> as many as a million people could be making their way to d.c. for the presidential inaugurati

morning. >> that's bp service manager. he says pretty soon people will be lining up at the station to winterize their cars. first on the check list, the battery. make sure it's strong. >> any service station can check your battery to see if it's holding its load properly. they'll let them know that it's weak. if it's weak, it's probably a good idea to have it changed. when you need it the most is when it's going to fail. >> next the oil. have it changed. >> if it's clean, it's easier for the engine to turn over initially to start up. >> he says take the time now to check the coolant system. important as temperatures start to fall below freezing and the tires, have them checked not. >> if they're more than five years old, most likely, they're dried out. they're not going to grip the road as well when the weather gets inclmant. >> the other thing you want to do to make sure you can see out of your windshield on those snowy nights is to always top off your windshield wiper fluid, and make sure you keep a jug of

while. let's show you what we're dealing with. temperature wise, you know it's cold. 35 degrees. winds out of the west at 12 miles per hour. we still have a breeze and that brings the windchills down. look at the current temperatures. potomac coming in at 31. 31, centreville, 27 in bull run, and 34 over towards beverly beach. now, radar still showing those lake effect snows. they're going to continue. any time you have air coming across the lake this time of year, the lakes are still relatively warm. that pulls moisture off the lake and you get the snow. that's what they're seeing. this will probably go on for the next day or so. tomorrow, the navy-army game. take the blankets if you're going. it's going to be a cold one. temperatures in the 30s, with rather breezy conditions, yeah, windchills will be in the upper 20s to around 30. a cold day for a game, but still not too bad out there. something else happening tomorrow, storm team 4 tracking winter. our winter special tomorrow night at 7:30.
