contrast to yesterday when there was traffic all around here for the grand opening of the mgm national harbor. there were people who had a reservation for tonight. we talked to one of them. >> excited about it. >> reporter: rik smith tells me he had a great time inside mgm national harbor tonight. >> i definitely saw the luxury there. it was one of the biggest things i enjoyed. looking at the restaurants and actually playing the games. >> reporter: he couldn't get inside last night at the grand opening. the casino and resort reached full capacity only 45 minutes after it opened. and traffic was bad. crowds are shawler tonight after mgm told people without reservations to make plans to visit another time. even though it is a big night for mgm national harbor, hundreds of people are coming here to maryland live casino at arundel mills. they tell me they want to avoid the traffic down at national harbor. we let people know there wasn't much traffic but they say last night's crowds are a turnoff. >> id

board. police arrested him last night outside national harbor. investigators say caldwell was involved in a three-car crash and he took a field so bright crash at the scene. he is 72 years old and blames hissan steadiness on his age. he told us he should have called uber. any moment the senate will vote on a spending bill to avert a government shutdown before the midnight deadline. you are looking live at the senate floor. the house passed the temporary spending bill yesterday and went home for the holidays. the funding bill will keep the government running through april 28th. it includes war funding, disaster aid, and an extension of health benefits for retired miners. once the bill is signed it will be sent to president obama. new tonight a report in the washington post says the cia has concluded the russian government intervened in the u.s. elections specifically to help donald trump win. not just to undermine confidence in the u.s. electoral system. this report is based on

given to u.s. senators and it comes on the same day president obama ordered a deeper dive into russian hacking. meantime the president-elect continued his thank you tour tonight in gran rapids, michigan, where he suggested a possible business agreement with ford to keep more jobs in the country. >> ford's made a promise to me, and hopefully at the beginning of the year they are going to honor that promise about something they are going to do that's very big, and they are going to do it in michigan, not in mexico. and it's going to be great. it's going to be great. >> yeah, mr. trump didn't give any specifics but there are multiple reports indicating ford is shifting its small car construction to mexico, but keeping all the jobs at its wayne michigan plant and changing the type of cars that plant produces. her nightmares haven't stopped yet but her attacker will spend the rest of his life behind bars. we have an update

have followed for six years. a man raped a montgomery college student in a public rest room on the campus. now she is telling jackie bensen how she found the will to survive. >> i was completecally caught off guard, especially being in a women's rest room. >> reporter: a quick trip to the rest room during her first day of classes turned into a nightmare. a man later identified as nathaniel hearth seen her on a surveillance camera slipped in behind her and turned the lock on the multistalled rest room. she says he told her he had a gun and would kill her if she resisted. the then 19-year-old absolutely believed him. >> i had to learn how to survive that situation. >> reporter: terrified minutes stretched into hours. she says at some point she gave up hoping a woman would come into the rest room and it would end. that thought, that thought changed her. >> you know what, i need to do what i need to do because no one is going to save

>> reporter: for whatever reason her attacker had not taken her phone. when he was distracted she took a chance and sent a text to her sister believing he would kill her if he caught her. >> i told myself if i die today, i have to die fighting. >> reporter: thanks to her call by the time surveillance cameras captured hart leaving the building a police dragnet will already formed. within hours he was taken into custody at a nearby motel. what followed was seven years of legal maneuvering by hart. >> today judge david pointon gave a sentence of life plus 120 years to mr. hart. >> reporter: the now 26-year-old victim plans to start college again next year. >> being able to still be at peace with yourself is something that i'm very grateful that i still have. >> reporter: nathaniel hart originally pleaded guilty in the case and received a sentence of

on appeal. after hearing testimony from the young woman you just heard from, it took a jury about 20 minutes to render a verdict of guilty. in silver springs, jackie bensen, news4. a speeding driver who killed a bethesda teenager and both of his parents will spend the next 12 years in prison. olgucan atakoglu was driving 115 miles an hour on river road moments before slamming into a car back in family. michael and allesandro and their 17-year-old son thomas died on the seen. their 16-year-old daughter survived that night. before the sentencing olgucan atakoglu sobbed and apologized saying he regrets his recklessness. tonight we get a first look at dylan roof's confession tape. we are getting to see this confession just hoursf

it's cold already. wind chills already in the 20s and teens in some locations. the good thing is the wind has settled down. even a ten miles an hour wind gives us a wind chill that's really cold. numbers right thousand, 32 degrees right at the freezing mark, winds out of the west at 8 miles an hour. no longer seeing the teens as far as miles an hours go. even an eight miles an hour wind with 32 degrees puts the wind chill this the 20s. 20 in gaithersburg, 17 martinsburg and 27 in culpepper. you just need a little bit of wind and it really makes things a lot different. makes things feel so different. the wind takes the heat off your body. hagerstown, warren ton, we are on the dry side. all just cold. up to the north they continue to see the lake effect snow showers. these come as the cold air moves over the relatively warm waters of the great lakes. that shows you we are seeing the cold air moving all the way down into our region as well. we are not going to see snow but the cold air will continue to

these aren't wind chills, these are temperatures. 23 in roanoke. atlanta at 33, dc at 32. really cold numbers across the eastern half of the nation. that looks like it's going to stick around. how about the wind chill? as we move through the overnight hours tomorrow morning is very similar to where we are right now. 24 dc at 8:00 a.m., 19 martinsburg. 23 culpepper. 18 in gaithersburg. 1:00 in the afternoon, the winds pick up a little bit. not as breezy as today. 26 in gaithersburg, 31 in dc at 1:00 in the afternoon. come on. even with sunshine it's going to be chly. 7:00 tomorrow, 24 in manassas. the wind is going to be the only factor tomorrow. without the wind if you are bundled up with some sunshine not too bad. again, tomorrow night definitely going to be on the cold side. 27 at 7:00, 35 by

we may get to 40 if we are lucky. wouldn't that be great. 39 is what i'm thinking right now for most of us. most of us will stay in the 30s. as we move through the next couple of days 39 again on sunday with the cloud cover. rain, a little bit warmer on monday. dwort half an inch of rain on monday. 51 degrees. things then get interest. i think we see snow on wednesday. 39 degrees there. coldest air by far comes in. 35 on friday. 20 on saturday and sunday. then we'll see another storm. this is one we have to watch as we head towards next weekend. right now a wintry mess looks like it will hit us on saturday. we'll talk much more about that later because we have no more time right now. >> thank you, doug. the caps are looking to win their third straight tonight against
