on our website we have a graphic that it illustrates who was among the trust and how they are related to him and each other. on the campaign trail, donald trump issued conflicting statements about whether he was called for a muslim registry. today protesters marched to the white house at president obama to the regulatory framework. they are concerned about a progr program. it was introduced after the 9/11 attacks and required imgrants from 25 countries to register with the government. it ended in 2011, but the legal framework for it remains. future first lady melania trump appeared in a courtroom today because of a defamation lawsuit she filed against a a local blogger and british

scheduling conference. this is trump's lawyer told "the washington post" the first lady elect didn't have to be there, but she wanted to meet the judge and opposing counsel. the defamation suit was filed in september after a blogger and the daily u mail online publi published a rumor that she once worked as an escort. they retracted the stories. the inauguration only six weeks away now, but protest groups say so far they have been unable to get permits to stage their demonstrations. one group is suing. tom sherwood reports it's mot just planned demonstrations that are on law enforcement radar. >> the inaugural stage set nor january 20th. there are still questions over planned protests may occur, they now have to worry about spontaneous events sparky

kregion by thursday and friday. the cold air is definitely there. take a look at what we're seeing today. let's go back 12 hours. there's the rain e we saw this morning. came down heavily at first. wet roads to start it the day. the sun came out and we saw a nice afternoon. highs in the 50s. right now we're in the 40s. 49 in d.c. 43 in hagerstown. and that cool er air will come n here tomorrow. so temperatures tomorrow about 10 to maybe 15 degrees cooler tomorrow than they were today. a small system tomorrow night. we'll look at that. turning colder on wednesday. then it gets just down right frigid late week thursday and friday before e we track another system starting on saturday. i have all of this for youack here in about 15 minutes. d.c. police are busy investigating two separate shootings in less than 24 hours. the first happened in northwest not far from the montgomery county line. . someone shot and killed a man in his car. it happened just hours after a

carjacking just two miles down the road. pat collins has more on two crimes that have rocked the normally quiet d.c. neighborhood. >> reporter: an armed carjacking in a case of murder. sunday night violence along the western avenue corridor. what's going on here. an armed carjacking near the 0 5600 block of western avenue. about two hours later, less than two miles away, a man shot to death inside his car on 32nd street northwest. this kind of violence most unusual in this part of the city. >> very upsetting. hopefully get to the bottom of it. >> reporter: the carjacking, it happened on belt road off western avenue. a woman coming home from the grocery store's confronted

the man with a gun. we have agreed not to use her name. >> i realized in his right hand he didn't put it in my face. it was like i got this. give to to me. i was like don't this. >> were you scared? >> yeah, but it was all i could muster. i have never had face to face crime before. >> reporter: the suspect takes off and leaves her standing there. >> i was standing there like, okay, fumbling for my phone. >> reporter: less than two hours later, less than two miles away, a young man found murdered inside his jaguar car. the victim 21-year-old shot and killed a block and is a half from his home. no motive so far in that case. today i talked to the victim's mother. >> he was just a

i'm his mom. he's just the best son ever. >> reporter: could these cases be linked? so far, police can't rule that out. but so far, no suspects, no arrests in either case. back to you. >> pat collins, thank you. in northeast d.c., police y they believe they know who pulled the trigger in a separate shooting in the district. that one happened right outside an elementary school. a man shot and wounded just after he dropped his child off. jackie bensen is outside the harmony public charter school in northeast with more on this. >> reporter: you can see the d.c. police officers here behind me. they stayed through after care at the end of the day. there was no threat to the public during this, but that is very little comfort to staff and parents here. the mayor came to the harmony d.c. public

northeast to exchange greetings with young students. they were inside at the time of the shooting and have been sheltered from the details of the incident that happened at the beginning of the school day. >> the kids were in their classrooms and already getting started. and we want that to be the case for them every single day. >> reporter: the mayor and police officials spoke to some parents who were aware of and deeply concerned by what took place. shooting victim drove the victim around 8:30. moments after the two went inside, a car described as a gold-colored acura pulled up and fired at the silver sedan. >> after the child was in the school safely, a vehicle came up on the scene. shots were fired and the victim suffered a non-life threatening injury. as a result of that, our investigators

a blast of really cold air out there stretching from coast to coast in this country. it's dumped snow and ice across parts of the area. what you're look at is in southwestern michigan. now tens of millions of people across the country are gearing up for another arctic blast later this week. >> we are in chilly chicago with a look at the impact from all of this wintery weather. >> reporter: we're still nine days away

start of winter, but clearly old man winter decided to e show up early. winter weather has arrived across much of the u.s. and it's packing a punch. >> it's cold. >> reporter: from coast to coast, snow and freezing rain aufecting millions. in at least six midwest states, more than a foot of snow. and now an arctic air mass pushing south will make the already bone chilling temperatures much worse by the end of the week. >> i don't like windchill. i can do without the wind. >> reporter: temperatures 10 to 30 degrees below average are forecast from the midwest to the east. the nost is bracing for highs only in the teens. the midwest could see minus 30 windchills. the snow and ice also making a travel nightmare. over the weekend thousands of flights were cancelled. in detroit sunday a delta plane skidded off a runway. fortunately no one was hurt.

inappropriately. when he got out of the car, the passenger jumped into the driver's seat and took off. police found that car early sunday morning near logan circle. they have not found the passengers yet. derrick ward has our report. >>, no, no, no. open the [ bleep ] door. >> reporter: that was the end of an uber ride that went terribly wrong. video shot by the driver outside of the car. it was around 1:25 sunday morning. it all started here in logan circle. it was going to be an average ride turned out to be anything but. the driver picked up two women and a man. . one of the women got into the front seat. they got a short distance and things got weird. >> the passenger in the front seat started grabbing my private parts without my consent. and i told her to stop. she

>> reporter: the uber driver says after a few more blocks the passenger got happy handed again. >> that's when i pulled to the side in logans circle and told them to get out. i got out of the car because i didn't feel safe because there were two people in the back. i got out and started recording. >> don't touch me like that. >> why you mad for? >> reporter: the uber driver said he never did anything to encourage the behavior. no means no, regardless of the circumstances. >> i u didn't appreciate it. i have a beautiful girlfriend. i have to stay faithful. but it was crazy. i told her to stop. >> reporter: the male passenger got out of the car and left before the other passenger drove off. the uber driver called police and they found his car a short distance away on 1th street abandoned and damaged. they found keys in a pile of leaves. the driver and the other woman were nowhere to be found. >> this is a job.

the national harbor resort and casino has been popular since it opened last week. people tell us that at least 50,000 people visited the facility and anticipate thousands more will visit in the coming days. it is a $1.4 billion facility that opened on thursday after two years of construction. it's open 24 hours a day. turning now to the weather. we have enjoyed this day and how is the night looking? >> not too bad.

average. today's temperature 56 degrees with plenty of sunshine across the region. some areas even got close to that 60 degree mark. really nice warmth across the region today. temperatures falling into the 40s. down to 43 degrees. it's a little chilly. 44 in quantico. 46 in leesburg. we're on the mild side for this time of year. as we move on to the next couple days, we won't e see numbers this warm at all. the rain was coming down pretty hard. no rain out there right now. you can see it was across our region early. to the north it was all snow. behind the system you cool down. it's not what e we saw.

but well behind it look at the numbers. only 14 right now in chicago. that's the kind of air we're going to e see here. frigid hair. that's really all it will be. notice back to the west a little bit in the way of some freezing rain and some snow. there's a freezing rain advisory well back to the west. as far as our area goes, just the cloud cover the region. then we clear out late after a little bit in the way of shower activity. we clear out wednesday morning to seat clouds return. these clouds come as a result of the front. take a look at what happens. it comes through. the windchill 37 in d.c. 29 in martinsburg. 35 in manassas. we could deal with that pap watch what happens by thursday morning. a windchill of 13 in

below towards peterburg and gets colder during the day. this is the air we have that comes in and continues to knock our temperatures down. 4 in frederick. so the cold is coming. but not quite yet. tomorrow, not bad. temperatures a little below average. 41 degrees by 11:00. 45 tomorrow. and maybe u an isolated shower or two around 7:00. next couple days, here comes the cold. it's not wednesday. we'll see the winds start to pick up wednesday and thursday. we'll be windy and cold with falling temperatures. 28 for a high on friday. both thursday and friday weather alert days because of the frigid conditions. saturday, we'll talk more about this at 6:45. i think this is a day to watch. especially early in the day. and look at this. ahead of our next system, 60 before we come crashing down

the last couple days there's been a a fire burning at a plant in montgomery county. it's still smoldering. >> could be for several days now. firefighters have been battling around the clock since last thursday in dickerson. darcy spencer reports on new concerns now about the impact all of this is having on residents nearby. >> montgomery county trash incinerator facility is affecting collection in the county. while garbage collection at single family homes will

it will go to a transfer station. the trash from multifamily properties like apartment buildings being temporarily diverted to other collection facilities in the region. >> that's unfortunate because it means we will be sending trash to landfills, which is something in montgomery county has worked. >> firefighters have been fighting the stubborn blaze around the clock since it broke o out thursy evening. the fire at the trash incinerator plant is under control but it's not out. it could take days before its extinguished. it's confined to this building, which is full of trash.

the fire is still smolders. residents may be able to see smoke in the area for several days. council member craig wright wants to know more about potential l environmental impact from the thick smoke jgenerated by the fire. >> folks tonight know should they treat this as a bad air quality day. >> reporter: this fire continues to flare up. officials say if they are in this area and you have asthma or a heart or lung condition, you're advised to stay indoors or try to avoid the area. a deadly crash is making the evening commute tough. chopper 4 was over the scene in loudoun county. the sheriffs office says one person was killed many his truck and another vehicle crashed. deputies had to shut down all westbound lanes of route 7 in the area of yellow schoolhouse road. route 7 is a major to ro fair for drivers and could be awhile before the lanes are open

we're working to learn the conditions of the other people involved in the crash. things back to normal on the red line, but it was a mess earlier this morning. the rail cars came apart near the twin brook station. they are still trying to figure out why it happened. adam tuss is there now with the latest. >> reporter: it turns out that this was not the first time that a metro train actually came apart like this this year. a metro train apart at the seams split in two. >> my first thought was they need to figure out why that happened so it doesn't happen again. >> reporter: the incident is as odd as it is jarring. >> i think this is a good system. this isn't the first time it's happened this year. in january a problem with the spring and moisture in the section that holds rail cars

testing of this part of the train now. back to today cell phone video shows riders having to get down op the tracks a after this happened and then walk back to the platform. investigators out here on the tracks doing a lot of measuring and digging today focusing on wooden rail ties bob ibing a bi as the train rolled over. metro says the second and third rail car and the coupler that holds them together disengaged. the train's safety system brought the train to a stop. >> it's one of those odd things that just happens every once in awhile. i'm still going to ride the train. >> reporter: this is another incident for metro and in this age of social media, a snapshot doesn't go unnoticed. there are about 40 people on board that train this morning when all this went down. there were no injuries reported. back to you. >> thank you. a proposal to extend vre to gainesville in prince william county may not have

support to move forward. our news partners report that the team studying the proposed expansion on the i-66 corridor says the cost would outweigh the benefits. they prefer a plan to relocate. they report that could increase daily trains from 16 to 22. the operations board will vote on it later this week. we are learning new details about the shooting of two women last week in a home on davon drive. information revealed a a man told police that e he pulled a trigger when he saw one woman reach into her pocket. he says he feared she was going for a knife.

no charges have yet been filed in this case. >> attorney general loretta lynch visited a mosque in northern virginia today. to talk about a sharp increase in hate crimes. lynch spoke to an interfaced crowd at the muslim society center in sterling. she noted recent fbi statistics that show reported hate crimes against muslims rose 67% in 2015. and she said the numbers should be sobering for all americans. >> there's a thread that connects the act of violence against a woman wearing a hijab to assault on a transgender men to it the tralkic deaths of nine african-americans during bible study in charleston. there's a thread. when one is threaten ed, all of us are threatened. >> she will travel to a high school in new york tomorrow for a discussion with lgbtq youth.

welcome back. president-elect donald trump was just days away from explaining to the american people how he would handle his businesses while in the white house. now plans have been put on hold. a short time ago, nbc news confirmed trump was postponing the news conference until next month. trump had said he would make an announcement on december 15th. that announcement highly anticipated because there's been concern on both sides of republicans and democrats over potential conflicts of interest

a report from bloomberg revealed the president-elect has dies to businesses in government and more than 20 countries. trump said he couldn't make this announcement this week because he's been bogged down with trying to fill u his cabinet. i'm chris lawrence, news 4. a new study reveals a surprising number of americans are taking psychiatric drugs. the study looked at how patients used three types of drugs in the year 2013. 1 in 6 adults admitting to filling out one prescription for psychiatric drugs. 12% reported taking antidepressants. 8% use sedatives. and half said they took antipsychotic med case. the institute conducted this study. starting next month, the smithsonian will display this image of the

the number of opioid deaths is expected to hit a number record this year. >> it's one reason a a lawmakers is going public with a fact that his own son is battling addiction. julie carey spoke with the delegate about that decision to speak out. >> when retired major john bell ran for office two years ago, this was the shot of his veteran son saluting him that ran in a campaign ad. he had no idea at the time his son was addicted to opioids and had been for years. it started when he was in a car crash which given pain pills and got hooked.

worse. >> over about a period of six months starting last october, he unfortunately started taking heroin. that often happens as well. >> reporter: it's a painful family story that he decided to make public by pinning this online letter to the editor. he has his son's blessing, by talking about their struggle they can help others. >> my hope is to get away from the stigma. addiction is a disease. we need to treat it as a disease. . >> it wasn't until last april he and his wife learned of his addiction when his behavior became alarming. there were warning signs on family svacation. >> he became ill u. he was withdrawing from the pil pills. now we know that. these are signs i would encourage family and friends to consider. >> it was so dangerous. >> he was showing the

so all in all, not a bad evening. no rain right now. we're not going to see another chance for rain until tomorrow night. a small chance as that system moves on through. the forecast tomorrow, a lot of clouds tomorrow. i wouldn't rule out sunshine through the clouds. looks like cloud cover. temperatures 34 degrees. 41 by noon. and 44 by 4:00. speaking of cool, only 5 degrees below average. so all in all, not all that bad. later this week, a completely different story. 43 on wednesday with falling temperatures. 32 on thursday. that's actually right around when you wake up. and then let's take a look at it. windy conditions. we're calling it a weather alert day. the evening near 20. and the windchill between 5 and 15 degrees. we're talking single digit windchills out there on thursday into friday. friday's high only 28 degrees after a morning low of 16. saturday is a day that i'm really watching. some of the computer model giving way to snow early. this is a system we'll have to watch.
