causing problems, also the cold, blustery wind that's making it feel so much colder. i'm pat lawson. news here in the storm center with our chief meteorologist. you've been following it all week. it is here. it is brutal like you said. >> you expect the wind chill to be in the single digits. it happened earlier than expected. wind chills 9 degrees in the city. some areas are close to zero with that wind chill. just amazing how cold we actually are. let's take a look at the numbers around our region. dc at 9. ocean city at 11. the winds will continue to gust throughout the overnight hours. wind gusts 40 miles per hour. this hour in baltimore it was 43 just about an hour ago in d.c. now down to 30. 29 in fredericksburg, 29 in gaithersburg. everybody not seeing the cold but the wind

there with the wind chills between zero and 10 degrees. a very cold night tomorrow night. that sets the stage for our next storm. winter storm watch now posted in effect friday night into noon on saturday for areas through the north of washington including frederick county, virginia, frederick county, mayryland. what's going to happen here, we have a chance for snow and then some ice on those roadways. snow and ice, slick roads possible before it all changes over to rain. we'll be watching this for you very, very closely. i'll have the latest for you. we'll be in the storm center throughout the rest of the afternoon. >> doug, there are not a lot of people walking around outside in northern virginia, but commuters will have to brace themselves as they make their way towards the metro. news 4's chris gordon is live in arlington. tell us what's happening there, chris. >> as you see behind me,

lot of people on the streets but we're at the metro station so occasionally people do come up to street level and they brace getting to the cold and the occasional gusts of wind. i have this laser pointer which measures the temperature and i've just been taking it against my body. i saw 18 degrees just a minute ago. 24 degrees now and you see when the wind whips up, that wind chill factor that doug just mentioned, brutal. also, the virginia department of transportation has spent the last two and a half days preparing the roads. there you go. now you've seen the blasts of wind. the virginia department of transportation has spent the last 2 1/2 days preparing roads for icy conditions and possible snow. p dot trucks spraying a brian solution on 5,000 lane miles of roads in northern virginia.

corruption scheme and was scheduled to be released june 10, 2017, but now transferred to a halfway house in the mid-atlantic region. the federal bureau of prisons tells us he ultimately will receive services including financial and job counseling as he prepares for total freedom. a return home in june 2017. jack johnson who was imprisoned, his wife imprisoned too in a corruption scheme is now out of the medium security prison in cumberland. at the live desk i'm scott mcfarland. more breaking news now from charleston, south carolina. just minutes ago jurors found dylan roof guilty of killing nine black members of a church at bible study last year. the verdict was expected. roof had made a videotaped confession. he did not take the stand in his own defense. his lawyers say their real battle is still is ahead, to save his life by getting him sentenced to life in prison. more on that when we go live to charleston

the latest now on donald trump's transition. the white house is criticizing the president-elect for his statements about russian interference in the u.s. elections. spokesman josh earnest says trump should stop attacking u.s. intelligence and start supporting the investigation into what happened. today russian president vladimir putin called reports that he was involved laughable. meanwhile, montana congressman ryan zinke is nominated to being the interior secretary. he's a highly decorated navy s.e.a.l. conservationists give him a poor rating because of his support of co coal, gas, oil. the metro board voted to cut hours of operation. there will be significant changes over the next two years. metro says it needs more time for maintenance. this is a story our transportation reporter tweeted early this morning. he has more on what you need to know about the

>> reporter: well, this was certainly not an easy decision for metro board members or metro staff, but starting in july the number of hours that the system operates during the week is going to be slashed dramatically. in fact, eight extra hours per week. so what does it mean, trains will only run until 11:30 on the week nights. they'll stop running at 1:00 a.m. on friday and saturday nights and on sunday the system won't even open until 8:00 in the morning. it will close at 11:00 at night. metro general manager says all of this extra time is needed for maintenance. we know very well about the maintenance needs. coming up on news 4 tonight we'll explore in depth what this means be for you and when you'll be able to get done. >> 1 billion. how does it take to protect yoel

it is bitter cold out there on this thursday afternoon. storm team 4 is tracking the cold air and the winds that are making it feel like the single digits. >> look at that flag blowing and what's next for us. could be snow. doug is updating his forecast

now. we're not the only ones feeling the wrath of this early winter. heavy lake-effect snow is pounding michigan and other parts of the wegs. >> as nbc's chris klekham is reporting, it could get to 40 below. >> problems sweeping across the u.s. continue to pile up. this was the scene thursday morning along i-80 in pennsylvania. a 59 vehicle pileup, the result of slick snow covered roads and highways. >> truck passed, going about 60, got into the ditch and started piling up after that. >> bitter cold and snow is making life miserable from coast to coast. >> this is brutal. >> it's all part of an arctic blast of winter weather that's pushing east causing temperatures to drop 10 to 30 degrees below average. >> we're in for probably a long winter at this rate. >> reporter: in chicago overnight wind chills dropped from 15 to 30

places and the temperatures for sunday's bears game, single digits at kickoff. out west heavy snow snarled traffic closed major highways. in portland, oregon, this school bus lost control and crashed into other vehicles with students on board but no one was seriously injured. of particular concern, finding shelter for the homeless. >> it's cold. i feel sorry for people who are out and don't have a place to go. >> reporter: new york's office of emergency management declared a code blue alert to focus on helping people who can't escape the cold get inside shelters. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: an early season cold snap proving the weather is not only frightful but downright dangerous. chris klackam, nbc news. you sure can't stay warm without a warm coat, that's why 3500 brand-new winter coats are being handed

children today. 23450us was there today when students from thompson elementary got their free coats during an event in northwest. later today a shipment of coats will also be delivered to children at d.c. homeless shelters. the charity has provided more than 13,000 coats for at-risk and disadvantaged youngsters over the past five years. >> it's great to see them. the sad thing is though that they have to come here to get new coats. it makes you feel good, but you also know there's a lot to be done. >> as a special treat for the children, georgetown university head basketball coach john thompson stopped by and read a story to the kids. some of his players were also there to help distribute those coats. we posted a link where you can donate to the cause. the nbc washington app search kids coats donations. the temperatures have dropped way past uncomfortable and are now downright dangerous. >> doug, what again

time we had cold like this in december? >> we looked all the way back to 2010. it's been six years since we've been this cold. temperatures right now, i mean, it's one thing to talk about temperatures in the 20s. it's another to talk about wind chills in the single digits. that's really what it is. it's all about this wind and as the sun goes down we even lose a little bit of that helping us to stay on the warmer side. we are in for one brutal night tonight. plenty of sunshine. clear skies. 23, winds out of the northwest at 30. that's the current wind gusts right now in d.c. you mentioned those temperatures in the teens already back to the west. 18 winchester, 19 port royal. the record tonight is 10. we're going to get very close to that. look at the wind chill. i mean, this is ridiculous. 1 in gaithersburg, 0 in hagerstown, 14 in culpeper. incredible cold in the month of december. if this is late january, early february, okay, but december, very rare to get this cold this time of year. nothing on the radar now, but a

skies. we have the lake-effect snows going on towards the great lakes. back west around kansas city, a lot of cloud cover. that's our next storm that will start to move in tomorrow night. what it's going to bring is a chance of some snow first and then some ice across parts of the area, but i want to show you this computer model. this computer model very much -- very similar to other computer models here. here we are at 11:00 on friday night. here's where some snow is. may try to bring a little snow down but it's not much and on saturday morning notice where the potential is for ice up by the pennsylvania border in through the panhandle of west virginia, around frederick. these are the areas under the winter storm watch right now. 7:00 a.m. may be coming close to d.c. but then it's out of here by 8:00. temperatures start to warm above freezing and then by 11:00 it's mostly dry. we're not going to see much rain out of the first waves. i think they get more rain on the day on sunday. that will definitely be all rain

tomorrow morning waking up -- tomorrow night, rather, 25 d.c., 22 winchester, 25 in culpepper. extremely cold night on your friday night heading out. here's the critical part, 5:00 a.m. when the moisture is moving in. notice the temperatures in the upper 20s. that's why we can get some ice on the roadways in those areas. by 10:00, just about everybody above freezing so that means that we're just going to be seeing rain at that time if there's anything at all. as i mentioned, we're going to be drying off. we'll be warming into the 50s on saturday afternoon. that's not all. sunday i've got a high of 63 degrees right now. so we go from 28 to 48 to 63 on sunday and then down to 31 degrees by sunday night. sunday another big fall as far as the roller coaster temperatures go. next week, a lot better. lots of sunshine. right now christmas eve and christmas, we're now forecasting 55. we do have to watch out for a possible storm on thursday. talk more about that at 4:45. >>

here are 4 things to know on a busy afternoon. now at 4:30, a former prince gorges county executive has been transferred out of prison and into a halfway house. he was convicted of corruption charges after getting arrested in 2010. metro moving forward with the plan to cut back. they agreed to cut late night service for the next two years. you can see the new schedule on the nfc washington app. guilty on all 33 counts. that's the verdict for the man who admitted to shooting and killing nine people. a live report in the next 30 minutes. storm team 4

in weather alert mode this afternoon as the cold, bitter weather and the wind grip the nation's capitol. yeah, talk about a polar plunge, that's what got us down here in the storm center with meteorologist amelia draper. if we were just talking about the temperatures, that would be bad enough. >> right. >> but we're not. >> it's the wind. it's brutal. we were just outside just to see how cold it was. i think my feet are still frozen. the good news, the winds die down tonight overnight. they're really not an issue tomorrow. it's unseasonably cold. take a look at how cold it's feeling out there when you factor in the wind gusting in anywhere from 20 to 40 miles an hour. feeling 9 degrees in washington, 1 in gaithersburg, 12 out in culpepper. mainly clear skies. that will continue to be the case through the evening hour. look at the numbers on your evening planner. by 8:00 we're down to 19 and it's going to feel anywhere from about zero to 10 degrees. itdr

create an unforgettable moment with his girlfriend so he staged a police standoff. in the situation the girlfriend shows up. she sees him on the scene, guns drawn, actually tasers were drawn. it's intense. worried that her fiance could get shot and then at a critical moment while on his knees, he proposes. so a lot of people i spoke to, pat, weren't really feeling the surprise proposal, especially with what we've seen over the last few years with violent interactions with police. a couple of people say, you know, two people in love, maybe this is just the way that they found to express themselves. he says he was trying to show some unity between police and motorcycle riders in his community. it's clearly different strokes for different folks. the mayor of mobile, alabama, says that she would not have consented to this stunt if she knew about it. so most

obviously is way above the top. >> you've got to wonder whether it's even appropriate in terms of police policies and procedures. >> that's right. the other video that your listeners are talking about involves a possible case of racial profiling at all places -- of all places, victoria's secrets. >> another situation in alabama. she was told to leave a victoria's secrets store after a different black woman in the store was allegedly caught shoplifting. in the video she says nearly a dozen white shoppers were not asked to leave, it was her and two other black women. so her name is kimberly huzah. she says in this video, she becomes very tearful. she says she was humiliated, embarrassed. all she was trying to do was shop like anybody else was trying to shop. victoria's secrets parent company has reached out to her and apologized. they have also fired the employee that was -- asked her to

when they see things like this that has a profound impact and brings up issues that should have already been addressed with equality laws in our country. more than a few people are telling me they've made decisions to stay away from stores where they've been having bad experiences in the past also underscoring that they won't be coming back to a place that would interfere like that. i spoke to lakesha. she tells me this woman's experience really krupp set her but she's happy she did it on social media. she'll put it on social notice. >> i'm sorry for her. there were no videos. i had my voice to complain to corporate and tell my friends and family not to shop there. i'm glad she was able to catch this incident on camera and expose this behavior. we have to keep doing this, file complaints and stop giving the stores our money. i'm glad they fired the store

this time of year. as we look to saturday, another weather alert during the morning hours with a wintry mix impacting some areas especially north of town. and that will transition over to just some spotty rain showers throughout the day on saturday. kind of a rainy sunday shaping up. all in all the weekend is not looking great. might be a good weekend to stay indoors and get the christmas tree decorated and get ready for family and friends to come over. as we look through tomorrow, we'll walk you through your day hour by hour. we start off with wind chills from zero to ten degrees. the thermometer on your car, hopefully it starts tomorrow morning reading 17. as we get into the midday, lunchtime hours we're around 28. skies become mostly cloudy throughout the day. kind of a gray 56 noafternoon f your friday. by 3:00 around 30. that will be your high. in the evening hours if you're heading out to the holiday parties, as long as you're home before midnight it's looking dry. travel weather looking good

that's how an icu nurse came to know him and called on him one day in mid october to the bedside of a terminally ill little boy who he says was more concerned about missing christmas than he was about dieing. >> he couldn't fathom what dieing was but he knew how much fun christmas was. >> reporter: he said during the visit the boy died out of his arms. out of a promise of privacy to the family and the nurse, he has not revealed any names or identifying details and this story has touched hearts around the world that missing proof could cause too many to question his account. >> the story exactly as he told me is true? >> yes. >> reporter: you were in that hospital with that little boy? >> yes. >> reporter: he died in your arms? >> yes. >> reporter: it was the nurses in that icu who called you? >> yes. and

and i did. >> reporter: sharon recalls in detail hearing her husband's account of what happened and what she said was in mid october. >> this is something that weighed so heavy on him that he passed up a chance to be with family, be with his grandsons that love him dearly because he obviously wasn't prepared for a child to die in his arms. he's not been trained. >> reporter: she stands by her husband's story as does daniel cunningham, a friend in whom he confided about his emotional experience exactly one week after it happened. >> there was a little boy who was terminally ill and you went on to say that it -- you know, this little boy -- a nurse had contacted you and had said something -- something to the effect of this little boy is upset that he's going to miss christmas. >> reporter: two different accounts of santa's story. if that's not eug

of her day, too. you make a great santa. >> thank you. thank you. i'm going to keep the hat for my kids. >> you need to be a little grayer. he earned a bronze star for heroism and he was awarded a purple heart when he died on the battlefield. >> now the search is on for the owner of the medals. barbara is here to pick up the story. >> really interesting story. we're talking about two of the most honored decorations awarded to members of our u.s. military who served on the battlefield, for heroism. these were found in bags of donated items that came into the an nondale goodwill during last spring or summer, they're not sure when. they bear the name of robert enslinger. he was an army second lieutenant fighting in belgium during world war ii. he was caught in cross fire and died in his third day of battle. we learned he attended

university but not much more is known. >> we have been conducting our own due diligence to track down a family member. we posted it online, a family member but each of the leads has led to a dead end up to this point. >> if the rightful openers aren't found clemson university has offered to add the medals to the wall of heroes. 13 years ago they tracked down owners of some other important military medals that had apparently accidentally ended up with a pile of donations. we just shared their post on our nbc washington facebook page so you can share it with your friends and get the word out. we're going to try to see if we can't help them find it. people collect things, trinkets gets stored in places and all of a sudden somebody doesn't know what they are. >> sure. >> that's how i think they get given away by mistake. >> just hope we can find a friend, a family member, someone out there. >> we hope so. we're going to try to see if we can help them. >> thank you, barbara.

we have team coverage. chris gordon is out in those elements. we're going to begin inside with doug in the storm center. >> it's all about the cold. the cold temperatures moved in very quickly. earlier this morning just after midnight we are at 39 degrees. then we continue to fall all day. with the winds gusting 30 to 40 miles an hour, it has been brutal out there. take a look at this. you needed the coat. around the upper marlboro. you didn't have the gloves. the pockets were what you were using even putting the hands back in the coats, the gloves and the pockets. i'll tell ya. this is the coldest air flow you've seen in quite some time. 7 the current wind chill. zero at hagerstown. 4 below in state college, pennsylvania. extreme cold for sure. look at the winds. we've seen winds gusting upwards of 30 to 40 miles per hour. now coming down a little bit. still 30 in martinsburg. that's why we have the wind chill. that will continue through the night. the national weather servicas
