s eye ice. kicking things off this morning with a live look across the district and the area as the deep freeze continues on the storm team 4 weather alerted day. >> temperaturies making what could be a slick morning on the road. tom is tracking it. >> we have freezing rain falling. that's rain falling an hitting surfaces that are below freezing and those subfreezing surfaces are going to stay icy for another few hours until about 9:00 this morning. as we get into the afternoon we'll be in the 40s. you can see it is continuing to move off from the

west virginia. this is the radar history over the last six hours. notice to the left we have this area in green, that's where the warmer air is coming in changing the freezing rain to rain across northern west virginia, but all around northern virginia, maryla maryland, the district, this pink here, that is freezing rain, rain that's falling and freezing on surfaces. watch out. we've had reports of multiple accidents. reagan national is at 20 degrees. we'll be above freezing around 10:00 or so. a look at more change addres on way in a few minutes. when we talk about the treatment on the roadways. while you were sleeping road crews have been prepping some roads this morning because of this possible winter weather. salt trucks across theio

have been pretreating the roads and crews have been using a salt and water mixture on the roads. you may notice hundreds of trucks on the roads this morning throughout maryland as well as northern virginia. david saw a few. drivers are urged to stay off the roads, but that can be tough for some. >> i'm ready for car accidents. i plan on going out early. >> reporter: why? >> i've got to do some christmas shopping. >> that's right. this is the last weekend before christmas. people have things to do. the virginia department of transportation telling drivers if you have to go out slow down. state police say a snow emergency plan is in place at this hour. crews telling us they plan to work through at least noon today. some local schools and colleges are delaying events because of conditions. activities at charles school in

and until 12:00 fairfax county. you can see a full list of delays in our main weather story on the nbc washington app. 6:03. let's get you to this developing story. fames tearing through a home in silver springs destroying it. all this happening days before christmas. we have details on who is now accused of igniting that fire. >> reporter: this is what's left of a home on sea island court in silver springs. restoration crews worked quickly boarding up windows and cleaning up debris. hours earlier at around 1:00 a.m. it was firefighters rushing to get the blaze under control. >> heavy fire condition especially through the roof. >> reporter: pete is with the fire and rescue. heys

to be started in the upstairs room by the 19-year-old daughter. >> there wasn't any intent to burn down the house but it got away from them. >> reporter: we spoke with the homeowner who said he ran into the room and used a blanket to try to extinguish the flame but it didn't work and they ran out of the home. >> in their attempts to smuggle the fire it got bigger. >> reporter: using a blanket to extinguish a fire is extremely dangerous and not advised. while getting out of the house safely is the focus, he said if there's time close the doors behind you. it can stop the spread of fire. >> it stops the flow of air and there's a barrier of protection for you. >> reporter: it's too late for the structure a family of four called home, but fire officials say everyone managed to escape

air force one touching down in hawaii at 3:45 this morning for the obama's final christmas vie occasi vacation as the first family. they left last night. in addition to spending time relaxing, the president plans to visit pearl harbor with japan's prime minister. it's going to be the first of its kind visit for japan. president elect donald trump is going to be in alabama today to continue his thank you tour. he was in orlando, florida with supporters yesterday. he talked about foreign policy at length. he made no mention of the concern over russia's role in the u.s. election, but for the first time during his final year-end press conference president obama said vladimir putin interfered with the u.s. presidential election. >> we allowed law enforcement and the intelligence community to do its job

welcome back to news 4 today. we are looking outside as a wintery mix moves through the area this morning getting several reports of early-morning accidents. a viewer saying they are at a complete stand still in maryland on 95 northbound after rockville. we are going to continue to follow these road conditions, but just another example of why we need to take it easy if we're planning to head out early. >> crews are treating the roads now. we'll check in with tom in a bit to get the latest. a fairfax county deputy who fatality shot a hospital patient has been cleared of any wrongdoing. the patient held up a post and charged at the deputy in august during a psychiatric episode. the deputy tried to calm martinez, but martinez was

when he tried to attack that deputy. a maryland man convicted of killing a social worker more than a decade after the crime. >> news 4 covered the story back in 2002. this morning there is an update including what the family is saying 14 years later. >> reporter: bizarre statements in a montgomery county police interview room in march of 2002. prosecutor say a physician struggling with what was described as a delusional disorder confessed to murdering his mental health case manager seen on the right in this picture. >> cunning. >> reporter: nicole was stabbed multiple times, her body was discovered next to a dumpster in an apartment complex. her murder rocked the mental health community. case workers visited clients in pairs a policy rescinded only

virginia, northern shenandoah valley and the metro area, northern virginia, the district and much of maryland as this moisture is coming through falling as rain and it hits these surfaces that are still below freezing and that rain freezes up creating a glaze of ice. watch out on your sidewalk. watch out on side streets. any untreated surface right now is getting a glaze of ice. this is going to continue for another two or three hours and then temperatures will be above freezing by about 9:00 this morning and we'll see that rain taper off and end by late morning. a look at our chances for rain on sunday and the week ahead in a few minutes. >> we'll check in with you then. if you or someone you know needs a life saving epipen a cheaper version is on the way. there will be a generic version

are below freezing and we'll see this continuing for another two or three hours. if you look at radar you can see there's a break in that pink zone to the west so it is going to be tapering off and ending in another couple of hours. the area you see in the green on the left of the screen, that is rain. it's above freezing now in much of west virginia, but the panhandle of west virginia, shenandoah valley and most of maryland, district, northern virginia, all this pink zone that is rain falling and freezing on untreated surfaces so watch out. it could be very slick on anything that hasn't been treated. that's the story for the next couple of hours. all this is tracking off to the east and it will dry out. by 9:00 this morning we'll start to see it warming a bit. this green zone is the zone where we'll get it changing to rain. it will be in mid 30s so things

people to stay away from the roadways. they're saying please give us time. they are working multiple crashes on what is an early saturday morning, but still folks headed out are encounter problems. >> i have a growing list of other issues we're learning about this morning. route 450 in prince george's county will be shut down for some time west of route 3 and westbound route 50 closed due to a crash. 95 northbound near the welcome center out in columbia, a complete standstill. the interloop closed at route 50 in virginia. >> i tweeted out a map that shows some of the gridlock that's forming this morning on this saturday. we do should get over to tom. he's tracking some of this and his warning for a while now has been until that 9:00 warmup. >> this is the mo

conditions out there. northern virginia chief shows us what to do when your car starts to slid. >> reporter: welcome to black top boot camp created by a law enforcement officer. they use this skid car to show drivers what it's like to fishtail or spin out on a slick road. his first reminder about winter driving. >> four wheel drive does not equal four wheel transaction. a car with all wheel drive can't stop or turn any better than a car without. >> reporter: if your vehicle does start to fishtail resist breaking at least at first. >> you want to look where you want the car to go and steer into the direction of the skid. applying brakes can sometimes cause the car -- the weight

we're active on this morning, but it's become a common way for folks to meet for the first time. this morning four people facing charges after what police say was a dangerous set up. >> scarey stuff. news 4 explains what happened and what you need to do to avoid a similar situation. >> reporter: it started as a chance encounter on facebook, the man who met this young woman online wanted to meet her in person. >> he got to her apartment and she was nowhere to be found. >> reporter: the victim parked their vehicle in this apartment complex thinking he was going to meet the woman he had been speaking with on facebook and he was robbed. >> there were three armed individuals there to rob him. they stole several items at gunpoint before fleeing the area. >> reporter: this happened on wednesday in district heights. prince george's county police say they went back to investigate the apartment after it happened. >> our detectives conducted a

apartment and they spoke to a young lady who lives there and while they were conducting that investigation with her, they searched the apartment and found two males inside the closet hiding with a backpack. >> reporter: it's what they found in the backpack and in the apartment that led to serious charges for everyone. >> it was a fully loaded 38 caliber resolve and several grams of marijuana. >> >> reporter: the women and three men were charged. stewart is a juvenile but charged as an adult because of the fully loaded weapon that was found on him. the police have this tip for anyone who is meeting someone online for the first time. >> it might be wise to try to meet them in a public location where there are a lot of witnesses just in case something goes wrong. >> reporter: the police say they are investigating this group to say if they've done anything like this before.

seemingly worse condition out there for folks headed out. we're looking at this tweet, a fire engine has gone off the road responding to an accident. this is on route 50 eastbound. this is with 25 vehicles crashing on the beltway right now. >> what do we need to know timing wise? >> it's the most treacherous kind of winter weather we get. it's not snow. it's ice. when we get a thin coating of ice, that's what's happening right now. all the area in pink, that's rain that's falling and freezing on all the untreated surfaces and it's not going to get above freezing. we're not going to see it melting until about after 9:00 this morning. it's going to be gradually melting so at least another couple of hours this is going to be ice on untreated surfaces here. we're going to see it taper off to rain by 10:00 this morning and ends by noon time but by then we'll begin to
