a frigid day today and plenty of ice on the road. storm team 4 meteorologist lauren rickets forecasts what is to come. >> my goodness, this morning a what a mess out there. across the area roadways. but good news is temperatures are warming. i still have a few spots that are below freezing at this moment but again those temperatures are coming up. we're going to be talking about that forecast. we've got rain on the way for tomorrow. we're going to be talking about all about that in a few minutes. >> early morning ice wreaks havoc for motorists and pedestrians. more about it coming up on news4. >> and a heated dispute between the u.s. and china after an international incident. what one side did today that could cool things down.

the beltway near baltimore this morning. slick roads may have center a fuel tanker truck sliding. a man who said he pulled over because of the icy roads caught the crash on his cell phone video and we want to show you a look at the aftermath. debris from the explosion set off a 55 vehicle pile up. the damage on some of the vehicles obviously very visible. crumbled between others and the truck driver and one other person we understand died in that incident. in total nine people were hurt. smaller local roads were just as icy and as news4 derrick ward reports they proved to be a change from montgomery county all the way to fairfax. >> stopping became the problem. >> it is not worth coming out here. >> the backup on the beltway in fairfax was from a multi car crash. a man involved in that crash was

>> reporter: -- anything since he wrapped up his trip in japan. no senior official from the kremlin have commented. in fact the state-run media here is barely covering the story at all. if it is mentioned, it is the fifth or sixth item in the newscast and when it is given that attention, it is said that this is an attempt by the intelligence community to cast shame upon russia that this is the hillary clinton campaign trying to come up with some excuse for why she lost the presidency. in the past the kremlin and kremlin officials have said that these allegations are baseless. and that if the intelligence community of the united states wants to prove them, it needs to show much more evidence. something that the cia and the president said hedoes not want to do in order not to reveal sources and methods.

so this blast of winter weather causing dozens of flight delays and cancellation at dulles airport and reagan national. and bwi things are back to normal but now the airlines are playing catch up. >> reporter: we are here at united airlines ticket counter. if you take a look there are still a lot of people standing in line here. we talked to several passengers. they told us about delayed and canceled flights. a lot of frustration here today. all of the runways had to be closed here at ds

i icy conditions. several flights had to be canceled, while airport crews treated the runways. by 2:00 all of the runways had reopened but there are residual delays. airlines are working to get operations back to normal. the passengers are telling us again about canceled flights and delays. there is frustration and confusion. >> newark flight was canceled. they put us on the bus to -- and told us we could get out from here but we're not getting out from here either i don't think. our daughter is over studying a abroad. we're trying to go meet with her. so frustrating but hopefully we'll get out tomorrow. >> been here all day trying to get out but now we're changing airports and going to reagan, trying to get my flight swapped from united to american airlines so i can get to tampa. >> if you are planning to fly today, you want to make sure you call ahead, check with your airline and make sure there is

christmas. happy holidays. looking all right now and again certainly dry for those at national harbor. maybe getting some last minute shopping down. the only thing is we're still a little slick in the north and west and i'm going to point that out coming up. temperatures rising overnight as i said. now tomorrow we're going do have the rain. we're going to be very warm. so we know it is going to be rain but also the winds are going to be filtering in as well and they are really going to be kicking it up. but tomorrow afternoon we're talk about the windchills again. after 3:00, 4:00. windchills in the 30s and 20s and the next rain is not until thursday. nothing happening on the radar right now. thank goodness, we're dry into the evening but we've got a frontal system to the west. that is the one that will only bring cold air. but it will also bring some of this rain we're going to see as we continue into the overnight. current temperatures right now. okay. look at this.

you head to the south. fredericksburg at 37 and it doesn't look like the temperatures are going to rise in the next hour or two. i know it is dark out there right now. be careful. we could have some black ice. and now, play a game "spot the front." memphis, 72. cincinnati at 60. right behind the blue and purple. st. louis at 25. that is some cold air. and monday not making it out of the 30s once again. so tomorrow temperatures rising and in fact they will trenl eventually come up. but right now this is the problem. this is the area of concern around baltimore. around fort mead and howard county, northern montgomery county. areas still of slick spots out there so please be careful as you are driving out and about tonight. again the temperatures will continue to come up.

d.c. will be 50, right around midnight tonight. and we will continue to see those temperatures rise till tomorrow morning. so again right around 50 at majority. but 11:00 a.m. -- at midnight. but 11:00 a.m. temperatures nearing 60. fredericksburg already over 60. shenandoah valley tomorrow in the 40s. temperatures falling behind that front. and after about noon the temperatures will conue crash. by about 5:00 some areas in the 30s. others in the 40s. plus wear going to have that wind so that windchill, 20s and 30s by tomorrow afternoon. tomorrow morning mild, tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow evening breezy and chilly. and it continues through tomorrow night as well. future cast, we're dry through in everything. looking good tonight. after about 7:00 a.m. we'll watch for some rain,

moving in through portions north and west along i-81 and after about 10:00, that is where we start to see the rain here. just more showers. about a quarter of an inch of rain. it scoots through in the midday temperatures are starting to drop at this point. and continues to move out. if it sticks around a limit longer, areas east of i-95 could have a few snow showers if the temperatures crash through sunday early evening. but the rain is expected to get out of here. i'm not anticipating any problems on monday morning. sorry kids and teachers, for everybody going back. 6:00 a.m. monday morning is just going to be bitterly cold. we're going to top out in the 60s. upper 50s, lower sixties before noon. then the temperature falls. breezy tomorrow. and still have ice on there. but no we're just going to see some rain. temperatures will be in the 30s on monday and then we are back to looking at more rain by thursday. and again christmas right,
