salvation army acquired it. i'll tell you all new at 11:00. much of the country is experiencing the coldest air in the season. what's in store for us this week with the official start of winter just over day away. first tonight, three more people have died in what appears to be an attack on a christmas market in germany. >> we have learned that police in new york city are stepping up security around holiday markets there. that department tweeted tonight they are moving expertly trained teams into areas it considers high profile. right now it's just after 5:00 a.m. in berlin. police there are still at the crash site examining the truck which killed 12 people when it plowed into the crowds. dozens more were injured. dan has more on the driver and what we're learningab

another person inside that vehicle. >> reporter: the popular christmas capital was filled with tourists and locals when a large truck plowed into it. the nationality of the suspect is not yet known. police said they are still investigating whether the innocent w incident was an attack. initial evidence pointed to an intentional act. video showed emergency vehicles converged at the scene and debris from the market stall strewn. there's been fear of an incident like this for a while now. today's incident comes after the u.s. state department issued a warning to tourists of potential attacks on christmas markets.

i'll let you know what kind of an impact it will have on your weekend. donald trump is one step closer to becoming president and today the electoral college cast its ballot and cast him the winner. former president bill clinton was one of the electors obligated to vote the will of the people. this is usually drama free but there were outbursts from virginia to wisconsin to phoe x phoenix. a special joint session of congress will formalize trump's presidency in a few weeks. white house was so concerned about russia cyber med ling in our elections that just eight days before election day the white house urged -- used the red phone which is a direct line to moscow to issue a stern warning to the russian government. a senior intelligence official says the message to russia was mu

muddled and had no clear warning about the consequences. for the third year in the row the government is penalizing a virginia hospital. the university of virginia medical center in charlottesville has higher than average rates of death from surgical complications and rates of infections. the government will provide nearly $2 million fewer dollars in medicaid reimbursement. a father from silver spring could spend 35 years in prison for the death of his young son. today a jury in montgomery county found him guilty of second-degree murder and child abuse charges. he took his 7 week old son to children's hospital after he was found unresponsive. the hospital said the baby had injuries consistent with

abuse. he was his primary care gaiver. he will be sentenced in february. the salvation army is thankful when its red kettles are stuffed but every christmas a few kettle strike gold and one in our area received a mystery donation. it's worth enough to help a lot of families in time for christmas. >> reporter: i'm sure you have seen salvation army bell ringers outside your supermarket. none of them are as stunned as captain carl in montgomery county. >> i'm very surprised. i feel blessed tonight. >> reporter: an anonymous donor dropped a christmas surprise in a red kettle outside this giant. >> we're going through our daily routine of counting the dimes and nickels. when the came out we stopped an

>> reporter: someone with a heart of gold dropped a rare canadian leaf coin. it has a face value of $50 but could be as much as $1200. >> reporter: the salvation army will sell it to a collector. money raised through the annual red kettle helps people through services and programs. >> it's so great to hear something like that. >> reporter: if the donor is watching this, what do you say to the person? >> god, bless you. i want to thank you much. >> reporter: i'm holding the coin right now and feels about three times the rats of a quarter. the salvation army plans to contact coin collectors. they will take this coin, sell it to them and once they get the money they plan to put it into their fund to serve the community. maryland will show off

tomorrow. commuters can start using the center on thursday and it's expected to serve 12,000 bus passengers day. prince george county is the bus and montgomery county ride on will pass through the transit center along with metro bus and the university of maryland shuttle if you have campus id. : metro will end its safe track surge tomorrow a day earlier. the production impacted louden down. they use the west and east metro station. normal bus stations will pick up wednesday. in the district it's not whether workers should have more paid family leave. it's how the city will pay for it that would turn a vote into a battle. tomorrow d.c. counsellors will consider two options. one, tax on city businesses would create a new government agency. that agency in turn would provide up to eight weeks of
