>> and i'm aaron gilchrist. more than two dozen people are wondering when they'll be able to go back home after a fire in a condo complex in greenbelt. justin finch is live at hanover parkway where this happened. >> there were 18 adults, seven kids, four dogs and one snake. all are reported to be okay but for families, a loss like this so close to the holidays is just hard. amidst the sound of saws, quick work to repair damage caused by fire some hours earlier. prince george's county firefighters on scene about 1:00 a.m. after flames were seen jumping from the roof of this three-story greenbrier condo building on hanover building in

greenbelt. a father of two is grateful that his daughter was first to smell something burning from her room and she woke up as the alarms began to blare. the fire was above their building. >> i looked up into her room and saw flames coming out through the vent. >> reporter: he then started knocking on doors, more than 30 people forced into the street, wrapped warmly as temperatures linger below freezing. in all, firefighters say the fire appeared to be focused in two condo units and the second and third floors took heavy fire damage and other floors in units below are water logged. >> the computers, laptops, ipads, everything is just ruined. >> reporter: days before christmas, they are planning a response for their neighbors in need. >> it was 1:00 in the morning and i didn't want to be in the

but we'll do what we need to do. that's the kind of community we are. >> reporter: and back live, looking at crews here who have been working since before sun-up, we can tell you that there's no word as to when those people who live there will be back into their homes. the red cross is helping at this time. back to you. >> thank you, justin. another fire ripped through a house in rockville overnight. montgomery county fire posted these pictures. two adults were displaced by the fire. it started from a pile of fireplace ashes that caused more than $600,000 in damage. we've had the clouds out there today and, unfortunately, it looks like they are here to stay. it looks like we're going to keep the cloud cover through much of the day, unfortunately. no

someone drove a tractor-trailer into a crowded christmas market. >> 12 people died. isis is claiming responsibility for that attack. however, security experts say it may have been isis-inspired rather than directed. there is a manhunt across europe for the suspect now and in berlin, people are laying flowers and writing messages creating memorials for the victims. in some of our nation's biggest cities, police are stepping up security in light of the berlin attack. officials say the danger of attacks, the big trucks or even cars has long been a major concern. nbc news' justice correspondent pete williams has the details. >> reporter: police in new york are deploying extra security where crowds gather, in times square and around rockefeller center. in chicago, a similar beefed-up presence at the city's christmas market. and more vila

capitol. pete williams, nbc news, washington. and president-elect donald trump is defending his electoral college victory this morning. he tweeted, "campaigning to win the electoral college is much more difficult and sophisticated than the popular vote. hillary focused on the wrong states." earlier he suggested that he would have done even better if the election was based on the popular vote. hillary won the popular vote by nearly 3 million votes. two more people now confirmed dead in the horrific explosion outside of mexico city. it puts the death toll at 31. 32 are unaccounted for right now. you're looking at new video into our newsroom from the fireworks market that basically blew up. debris is everywhere here. 11 years ago, a fire at the same market caused a chain of explosions and destroyed hundreds of stalls. right now, lawmakers in north carolina are, working to repeal a controversial bill that some say

accused of kidnapping a young girl. the 10-year-old said that a man in a white van tried to lure her inside that vehicle with candy. this happened on monday on 15th street southwest after she had gotten off the school bus. he allegedly told her that there were dogs inside the van and tried to grab her backpack. the girl ran away and told adults later that night. a scary situation last night when a mother and hetwo children were hit by an suv in herndon. they were hit while crossing the street. no charges have been filed against the 20-year-old driver. police don't believe alcohol or speed were factors in this accident and everyone is expected to be okay. it's official, antwan wilson will be confirmed as the head of public schools. he's worked in

more than 20 years and was most recently the superintendent of oakland, california, school district. you may have heard about the paid family leave plan which was approved yesterday but not everyone is celebrating that. here's what you need to know about it. the bill is expected to go into effect in 2020. to pay for it, a payroll tax will be put in place on employers. it's expected to generate $250 million a year. that money will be handled by a new government agency. the bill guarantees up to eight weeks of paid leave to new parents working in the private sector. news4 was there after the bill passed for reaction. >> this just helps many i familç and my loved ones and it will help a lot. >> opponents say the majority of people who will benefit don't live in the district. bowser said she would not add her name to the legislation. if she vetoes the bill, the

well, it was one of the biggest drug busts in the history of montgomery county. >> police seized 250 pounds of marijuana earlier this month which started as a routine traffic stop. a 53-year-old was driving a minivan doing about 66 miles an hour in a 55 zone. once the arrest was made, he smelled marijuana and after some questioning he admitted to hauling the pot. >> he was pretty calm, surprisingly. he was straightforward with us on the stop about how much he had in the car. >> according to court documents, he says he was coming

about 20,000 time as day without any thought. however, when harnessed correctly, breathing can reduce stress and anxiety and boost your immune system. the benefits of controlled breathing, dr. joshua weiner is joining us. can you explain the different ways that different types of breathing can affect the body? >> sure. so when people are breathing rapidly and shallowly, that can trigger your fight or flight reaction. that gets your sympathetic nerve sho nervous system up and running. if you breathe more slowly, that triggers the relaxation response. that's kind of the break. that's what calms your body down. that's going to slow down your heart rate and that's going to help decrease cortisol, a stress-relea stress-release hormone. what you're doing when you're doing controlled breathing, you want to do what

abdominal breathing rather than chest breathing. you're pulling down your d diaphragm out. you want to lie down on the ground, put your knees up, hold your hand on your chest and one hand on your abdomen and you want your chest to stay still and your abdomen to rise and fall. it's going to take some practice. but that type of breathing actually brings a lot more oxygen into the lungs and it also forces you to slow down your breathing and triggers that parasympathetic nervous system by using the vagus nerve, the main calming nerve for your body. people think it's a joke when you say just to breathe when you get upset but there's science behind that. >> we think of yoga and meditation and really controlled breathing. does this fit into that category, too? >> yes.

the abdominal breathing, you want to slow that breathing down and instead of breathing the average am, which is 10 to 12 times, you slow it down to about four to six breaths per minute. you hold for three seconds, five-second exhale, pause for two seconds and then repeat. now, there are all different types of breathing techniques out there. this is one of the more common controlled breathing techniques. there are lots of them. i looked at a study that looked at people breathing twice as long on their exhale as their inhale and it's been shown to help with inducing sleep. so there are all of these different mechanisms of breathing. this is just one that i'm talking about today. >> you say it takes practice. how often should people do this in a day? >> as much or frequently as you can. i think a goal should be to aim towards getting to ten minutes twice a day when you were just sitting

breathing and slowing it down. if you can do that, you're doing great. start with a minute twice a day and work your way up. something is better than nothing. >> i know you said it needs to come from your abdomen. >> right. >> does it matter if it's nose or mouth breathing? >> better to do nose breathing. when you're mouth breathing, you blow off more carbon dioxide and that causes vaso constriction where your blood vessels tighten a bit and that's not good for you. so you do the nose breathing nice and slow and there are some apps out there that can help some people. there is one called calm and there's another one called breathe to relax. so these can be found on iphones, et cetera. they will have guides so you can follow them and it will help you control your breathing because you follow along with what is showing up on the screen. >> very good advice. dr. joshua weiner, thank you. >> and i'm practicing it, aaron. i'm practicing. up
