happened that ended up with the driver of that car was shot. this happened early this morning. a key piece of evidence is taken from the scene. police came upon this car this morning in the 4700 block of byers street in capital heights. they parked there where two men were inside. the driver died. it was a call for a decision to be able to get police through the street. what happened next is quick and violent. the police chief tells how things unfolded. >> as they woke the individuals, the passenger immediately moved to exit the vehicle. and simultaneously and these things all occurred at the same time, simultaneously the driver armed himself with a handgun and tho

passenger and the female officer. >> reporter: the officer on the driver's side fired two rounds and the driver was hit. >> the officers break the window because the driver is unresponsive. and begin cpr. >> police recovered two weapons from the car. >> as soon as he woke up, he got shot. even. if you saw a gun, y'all could have freeze, and i'm going to do x, y and z ask y'all took it upon yourself to kill that man. >> the car involved also fits the description of a car involved in several robberies in the area. part of the investigation we'll look at that as well as the two weapons found inside the car to see if

they have one suspect in custody. back to you live here at the scene, according to court records, terrance thomas was au waiting sentencing on gun and drug charge cans stemming from an incident back in september of last year. it was also on probation after charges of assaulting a police officer in the district. this is the second death by gunfire in as many months on the same block. we'll have more about that on news 4. we're live in capital ligheight news 4. an ambulance was barrelling through an intersection responding to an emergency with lights on and sirens blare iing when it collided with an suv. it happened this afternoon at 14th and h streets northwest. two emts and the ambulance suffer issed minor injuries. the driver of the suv is okay. police are trying to determine who was at fault. chop canner 4 was up over a crash on clarksburg road near 270. a car drove off the road and flipped on to a corn field. pole

figure out how that accident happened. the driver was not injured. . police tell us they have nabbed some christmas grinchs who stole all these holiday packages. the packages snatched from the people's front porches. now officers are playing santa's helpers returning the gifts to the rightful owners. chris gordon outside the police station in germantown where there's a lot of holiday cheer tonight. >> reporter: there are smiles here, but there's also the grim reallization that this recent string of crimes involves juveniles. last week two juveniles stole a car and then used it to drive around taking a packages from in front of homes in clarksburg and here in germantown. we drove for less than 20 minutes through this neighborhood and spotted four packages delivered to doorsteps waiting to be picked up. montgomery county police say the

dramatically this holiday season. today in northwest washington, d.c. police tell us this surveillance camera caught a a thief taking a a package on park road. montgomery county police showed us how they have recovered 42 holiday items stolen from homes in the past week. >> it was a fantastic feeling to be able to recover this holiday gifts that people had stolen from property. >> reporter: police notified victims they could come and claim stolen merchandise. this couple is grateful. >> thank you so much. i really appreciate it. >> we never lost a package before. this is the first time. it got recovered. it's amazing. >> reporter: this man thought it was a mystery when his package didn't arrive sunday. today he brought his 3-year-old son as police made the delivery.

where you may see somedlies. coming up, i'll walk you through where you can expect those delays and how you can avoid them. >> thank you. the tacoma langley cross roads transit center is open to the public. that facility here in new hampshire avenue in maryland is now the largest nonmetro rail transfer point in our region set to serve more than 12,000 bus riders every day. among those routes right on prince georges county and the university of maryland shuttle. the transit center has a well-lit canopy u and screens that bus runs. a frightening incident near the university of maryland. a woman was sitting in her car on baltimore avenue in college park yesterday afternoon when a man walked up to her with a knife. he demanded she give him her car. she refused and drove off. campus police were called and they are investigating. if you know anything about this or related

a call. we have new information on a story we told you about earlier this week about a brazen thief who stole a fairfax county metal star off the root roof. this is what the family's home looked like for decades with the star displayed. this is what it looked like earlier this week if the family heirloom missing. tonight they were determined not to let the grinch steal their christmas so they fashioned a new star. it's smaller and more colorful and it is secure ly attached to the chimney. they are still hoping their original star will snomehow mak its way back home. today a a special day for some children from southeast washington. not only did they practice in the caps fuacility, but they tok the ice with star players and had a great time learning new skills and asking some pretty tough questions. >>

today the first full day of winter. it was pretty mild. we hit a high of 60 degrees. warmer than i was forecasting yesterday. we'll take it. if you got out during the afternoon hours, it was really nice. with clear skies and dry air in place, we're tumbling this evening. it's going to be cooler tomorrow by a good 10 degrees. it's still going to be nice for late december. as we look to saturday, there will be some rain around during the morning hours. but dry for saturday evening as festivities get underway. as we look to christmas and new year's eve, dry weather in the forecast. currently across the area, we're in the 40s just about everywhere. look back to winchester already down to 39 degrees.

and tomorrow morning we wake up to 32. it's a cold start. we'll have plenty of sunshine during the morning hours. clouds increase as we head into the afternoon and evening hours. by lunchtime, we're in the mid-40s. . . lunchtime today we were already near 50 degrees. a high tomorrow of 49. we hit that at 3:00 in the afternoon. tomorrow evening, friday nugt, if you're traveling then, it's looking good. all in all, the weather having low impact on your friday whether you're traveling or staying in town getting last-minute shopping done. travel up and down the east coast is looking good. outdoor exercise is going to be cooler than today but still refreshing. and shopping during the evening hours, dry u and chilly. i want to show you the timing on future weather for the rain on saturday. 5:00 a.m., some showers in areas farther back to the west. we see rain move into the d.c.

coming up, a workplace accident and a man's heart stops beating for several minutes. we'll hear from the paramedics who helped to revive him. a couple triesed to find their place on reality tv about flipping houses. first at 5:30, an fbi manhunt has ended the man suspected in a series of recent disruptive bomb threats is under arrest now. prosecutors say the hoax is disrupted thousands of travelers. even alerted the secret service at the white house. scott macfarlane broke this story on our nbc washington app. >> east a tow truck

find him and today we learned why. james cherry stayed silent during his appearance before a judge. he pled not guilty to charges of making false threats and faces 20 years in prison. he was anything but silent in late july. he made a series of bomb threats including one that forced the e evacuation of a union station on a wednesday evening. he called 911 claiming to have placed eight bombs inside. amtrak and bre train schedules were thrown into chaos and a terror task force canvassed the facility. prosecutors say when investigatored asked why he did it, he responded he thought he would be funny. he phoned in a bomb threat to the metro station and issued a threat to an area in clos proximity to the white house requiring the secret service to respond.

a judge said he can't be kept away from his weapon of choice, a phone. the fbi search for cher ended here at the southeast neighborhood library in d.c. prosecutors say the fed's connected cherry to the bomb threat bis finding his cell phone. another government building was targeted too. more on that tonight at 6:00. for now in the newsroom, i'm scott macfarlane, back to you. a teen is in custody accused of robbing a taxi driver. several in the district. officers arrested jonathan w waddell yesterday. on two occasions he was picked up and go to everette street where he either showed the driver a gun or implied that he had a gun. in both cases from earlier this month, waddell got cash and took off. howard county sheriffs department is bringing holiday cheer to families affected by

the department collected items in their office today. they the sheriff and members of his domestic violence unit delivered the items to families with the hope works foundation. it's an organization that provides support and advocacy to survivors of domestic violence. 1500 items were delivered. crews responding to the scene of a responsible heart attack wound uptaking three people to the hospital after a carbon monoxide scare. it happened yesterday in northeast. when crews got inside, alarms went off and meters ran 500 parts per million. it can become daujs at 35 parts per million. the furnace is to blame. the residents just had had it worked on yesterday. we're told the home does have detectors, but apparently they were not working. we are working to help keep you and your families safe at home. you

m monoxide is a silent killer. fire officials say you should install a detector in each floor of your home. you should also have all heating aplienszs serviced by a a technician every year. in case your power or heat goes out, you should never use a generator inside the house or try to heat the house using a gas stove or oven. back from the dead. tonight we're hearing from first responders who helped save a man who was electrocute d. this happened yesterday in rockville. we're told the man was dead for several minutes. news 4's meagan fitzgerald talked to medics who say they had some help. >> when the call comes in and the sirens go off, these first responders never quite know exactly what to expect when they arrive to a scene. >> on the way to the call that we were dispatched for the cardiac arrest from

electric up in the ceiling and came in contact with high voltage lines and became electrocuted. >> reporter: daniel is a lieutenant with the montgomery county fire and rescue. when he and his crew arrived this office building, the electrician had been dead for five minutes. >> our fwies arrived first. they found he was not breathing. started cpr. >> it was determined that the patient needed to be shocked. . we then shocked the patient with the defib ri later and able to get. a pulse back. >> then thomas and his partner rushed the man to the emergency room where he was able to recover. >> the biggest thing they did for him was to kick the ladder out so he could fall to the ground. >> reporter: that was a critical move to get the man away from the electrical power source without anyone else being electrocuted. it was these guys who

like last saturday. saturday evening, hanukkah gets underway. heading to church, it's dry. temperatures in the 40s. so it's chilly, but it's not frigid. probably don't even need the gloves. for christmas day, partly cloudy skies and temperatures once again around 50 for a high. and all of the snow resorts in our area now open. but if you want to get out there, the trails open. 36 inches. and snow shoe open. now i'm showing you sunday of future weather here. our area is completely dry on christmas. notice this line of rain potentially some severe weather in the center part of the country and further back to the west in the rockies some impressive snowfall in the forecast here. on monday, mostly cloudy and a high of 52 degrees.

some police officers in kansas had a different assignment this week. they are looking for traffic violators, but instead of giving them a ticket, they are handing out gift cards. >> sir, normally this is about $100 ticket. but today we're going to do something different. merry christmas from the wichita police department. that's a gift card. here's your license back. >> thank you. >> i'm just satisfied with the police department and everything. i'm just happy as heck. >> 29 people pulled over got the surprise this morning. security will be a top priority for the inauguration of donald trump now just 29 days away. law enforcement from all over the country are volunteering to help
