jennifer johnson joins us with the latest. >> that's right. this was unusual step for a president-elect donald trump. they got what they wanted. no u.n. vote today. >> president-elect donald trump stepped into an international showdown today as egypt postponed a vote on a resolution declaring israel's settlements a violation of international law. the prime minister benjamin netanyahu demanded the u.s. veto the resolution. that prompted donald trump to tweet and post on facebook. peace between the israelis and palestinians will only come through direct negotiations and not through the imposition of terms by the united nations. an unusual step for a man not yet in the white house. >> we have one president at a time and that's quite important, but i don't think we're going to stop trump from tweeting out or speaking out. i think president obama has taken that it into account. >> the u.s. has opposed

settlement construction. now some question whether trump will reverse that. >> that would be, in my judgment, a serious mistake and a setback toward efforts to achieve can peace in the region. >> the president-elect got into. another diplomatic dance after tweeting the united states must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding news. that came after vladimir putin called on his country to boost its nuclear power. today trump also worked on his white house team naming familiar face kellyanne conway as counsellor to the president. >> he was krit u call to the win and now going to uphold one of the top positions of the white house. also appointed today was shaun spicer, spokesman for the republican national committee. i'm jennifer johnson.

a verbal attack on ivanka trump led to an ugly incident on a flight out of new york. today trump, her husband u and three kids were flying out of jfk when the first leg of the trip to hawaii. tmz reported that a man on that flight confronted ivanka, asked her why she was not on a private plane and said her father is ruining the country. the passenger's husband tweeted about the encounter, but tweeted the message after the crew removed the couple from the plane. secret service confirmed to nbc news that ivanka trump is under their protection. it is not clear where her protective detail was positioned. news 4 broke the story on twitter. it turns out president-elect donald trump will be featured on a metro smart card after all. the card just shows the white house right now. tom sherwood has more on why metro is

the man pulled out a gun. derrick ward is on byers street where we have learned this is not the first deadly shooting on that street. >> reporter: we are here in capital heights on bye yers street. the shooting this mahmoud morning happened right about there. that's what the investigators left. that's where the car was when the shooting happened. folks that live on this block are double trouble not just because of police here this morning but because of another shooting this last month. terrance thomas is dead. police say he pointed a gun at an officer who was responding to a call and reporting a suspicious vehicle. both were asleep. officers awoke them. >> the driver of the vehicle armed himself with a handgun and then pointed both at

passenger and at the female officer. >> an officer on the driver's side hit thomas while the passenger who tried to get out of the car was taken down by other officers. officers then began attending to the driver. >> began cpr providing life-saving measures. >> he lived five blocks away from where he died. >> everybody knew him as a funny dude. >> a man was killed on this same block. >> they don't believe there's a connection can, but they are on all possibilities at this point. >> now the other man in that car is in police custody. according to legal records, thomas was awaiting sentencing on gun and drug charges from september of last year in prince georges county and on probation

market. a local woman says 80% of the people living in that town earn a living fre ing from pyre teot. investigators are providing more evidence about the man suspected of driving a truck into a crowded christmas market in berlin. the new dash cam video shows the speeding truck headed straight for the market killing 12 people. police say the suspect left fingerprints behind. the hunt for him spans across all of europe right now. the mood at the berlin market is somber as it reopened for business u. matt bradley is there now. >> german prosecutors are more certain than ever that the 24-year-old tunisiaen was the man who perpetrated that grizzlie attack 72 hours ago on this christmas market around me. if you can imagine,

assad since the uprising began back in march of 2011. a major labor union has won the right to organize workers at the new trump international hotel in downtown washington. local 25 of the union unite here says trump officials have agreed not to oppose their organizing effort. 130 workers now will be asked if theyment to join the union. unite here represents about half of the hotel workers in the washington area. the union is organizing 1300 workers at mgm national harbor. social media has extended everyone's global reach and that can be a good thing. but even a solid piece of journalism can be distorted by somebody else and published online. within seconds, the misinformation multiplies and spreads not unlik a disease. here's an example from our own newsroom.

"huffington post" picked up the original story and rewrote it without doing any additional reporting. but some blogs went further. >> so blogs started to say u that marching bands were b boycotting the parade, which wasn't necessarily true. >> later that same day, at least one facebook group took it a step further. not one high school marching band is willing to perform. >> which wasn't true and wasn't what my u initial story says. >> reporter: on december 15th, the notion was debunked that they staged an official boycott against trump. and noted the rumor is a sensational liezed and exaggerated version of a genuine news report. >> i was surprised by how quickly original reporting turned into what part-time wanted it to say. >> it is

first at 6:30, an fbi manhunt has ended in d.c. a man suspected of a ries of bomb threats against high profile targets has been arrested. >> only on 4, scott macfarlane reports on a case that impacted thousands of people. >> a food truck driver from georgetown, the fed's spent a couple weeks trying to find him. according to a judge, the man's weapon is his phone.

>> false threats and facing 20 years in prison. prosecutors call cherry an extreme danger. the d.c. man is accuse d of phoning this a bomb threat to union station july 27th, forcing a massive e evacuation and widespread disruption to amtrak and vre trains. he told the dispatcher he placed eight bombs inside union station. court filings sd they u had a bomb threat into the metro station. again, triggering a police response. and they say day before, they u called in a bomb threat to an area near the white house and near the world bank, which can led to an alert to secret service. his attorneys say no one was harmed in the incident, but a a judge ordered he be jailed until trial to keep him away from a telephone. the fbi tracked him down at this lie u brar a week ago. vrgts say they connected him to the threats by finding his cell phone number.

that trial happens. >> breaking news of a terror plot foiled in australia. police arrested seven people for planning a series of bomb attacks in melbourne on christmas day. police believe isis inspired the suspects who wanted to target it popular spots in that city such as a train station, public square and a cathedral. police say they have been watching those suspects for some time and they believe that the threat is now over. a man from virginia has been charged with provide issing support to isis. he lives in virginia and was arrested yesterday. investigators say he gave money to somebody in october and november believing it would be used to help buy weapons and ammunition for isis fighters. but that person was working undercover for the fbi. the case started with a tip from someone who noticed

social media. investigators say williams bought an ak 47 assault rifle the day after the shooting last year. security cameras in neighborhoods across our region have been capturing thieves stealing holiday packages off people's front porches. police have recovered more than 40 packages stolen just this past week. chris gordon is outside the police station in germantown where grateful people claimed their stolen gifts today. >> reporter: montgomery county police say one adult and three juveniles are responsible for stealing dozens of packages in the past two weeks. they say this kind of crime is is growing. it's the time of the season when packages with holiday merchandise purchase d online gt delivered to our doorstep. when no one is home to receive

disappear. we have seen scenes like this recorded on security cameras throughout our area. the number of stolen packages are rising in the district, virginia and maryland. police are using security c cameras. reports from neighbors and delivery drivers who say they are being followed by thieves who then walk up to the front door and walk off with a package that they just delivered. police have this advice. >> you can have the package delivered to work, to a neighbor, when you are home. >> police put out this display. for stealing these items which were left in packages at homes in german town and clarksburg. police notified the residents who had packages stolen and today invited them to come to the germantown station to have their gifts personally
