the 29-year-old now accused of first-degree murder in the death of tricia mccauley, his fourth arrest this month. 11 days ago, johnson netted two arrests for death, one at a pcs store and another at a cvs store. he was ordered to undergo a mental evaluation and wear a tracking monitor. >> clearly people don't see it. clearly it's i just have it on my leg and i'm going to commit more crimes. >> reporter: it's unclear if johnson ever followed through. a search of records link him to theft charges and assault and he's wanted for crimes in montgomery and prince george's county. mccauley was found dead in her car on tuesday. police say a tipster led them to johnson which led them to mccauley. a vigil is held in her h a

many lives. and before her discovery, friends had not heard from mccauley until christmas -- they had not heard from her since christmas afternoon. johnson will be due in court later today. he's being held without bond. pat, back to you. >> justin finch, thank you. police want anyone who has seen the suspect with mccauley's car to come forward. go to our nbc washington app and search "yoga teacher". investigators are searching for a grandmother and 5-year-old who passed through our region. the last time anyone saw barbara briley was christmas eve at this gas station just off 95 in caroline county. the 71-year-old was driving her great-granddaughter from new jersey to north carolina. sheriff deputies show briley entering the store and asking for

>> probably about 35 minutes, talking with her, make sure everything was okay before she left the store. >> if she could contact somebody, she would not let these many hours go by and not talk to us. >> virginia state police were able to ping her phone 30 minutes south of richmond yesterday morning. they are searching the area around that airport. the man convicted of the emanuel ame church shooting, dylann roof, is appearing in court for a presentencing hearing. roof has asked to represent himself in the sentencing phase of the trial. the judge may make a decision on that today. roof is set to be sentenced january 3rd. two university of maryland football players have been reinstated after they were suspended for the last four games of the season.

lorenzo harrison and d.j. turner were accused of shooting an airsoft gun. the flight recorders could answer why a russian military plane crashed this past weekend. 92 people were killed when the plane went down into the black sea. this is new video of divers trying to uncover pieces of that plane and all of the victims. investigators say they will find the second black box today. it was an historic moment as shinzo abe was the first to visit the "uss arizona" memorial yesterday. more than 2,000 americans were killed there in 1941. in his remarks, abe offered sympathy for those who died. and at this hour, secretary of state john kerry will lay out the obama administration's vision for rein

conflict between israel and the palestinians. this comes less than a week that the u.s. abstained from voting for a u.n. resolution condemning israeli settlements. a senior u.s. official says kerry will also respond to some of the claims directed at the administration in the aftermath of that vote. meanwhile, president-elect trump is stepping up his criticism of president obama. in a tweet this morning, he criticized his handling of the transition saying, quote, doing my best to disregard the many inflammatory president o statements and roadblocks. thought it was going to be a smooth transition. not. edward lawrence has more. >> reporter: he's been out of sight but very visible on twitter. he's saying, "president obama cam paired hard in very important swing states and lost. the voters wanted to make america great again". >> this partisan rivalry, if you will. >> reporter: advisers to

you may run into traffic along route 1 in prince william county. crews will be doing major road work near the jefferson plaza shopping center in woodbridge. take a look at the pictures chopper 4 got as it flew over the area. it's to make room for a new bridge and to add another lane to jefferson davis highway. the work will last through next friday. you'll soon be able to update your status for free at all of the underground stations. the green light has been given to extend a pilot program. right now it's only at six stations but come next summer, the free service will be available at 60% of the stations. the rest will be brought up to speed in 2018. a lot of people waiting on that, so, great. >> that's for sure. well, there's

lo loudoun county, unusual spots of dry and winds out of the northwest. it's going to be pretty breezy tomorrow afternoon. 47 degrees is the temperature right now. we'll head into the upper 40s as we continue into the afternoon. but nothing is going on on storm team 4 radar right now thanks to a weak high pressure in charge. that will change the frontal system tomorrow. so we're even dry after midnight tonight and then we get to 3:00 a.m. and we start to see rain move in. we're going to have to watch the temperatures. matt rivers will be with you and chuck and amelia in the morning. we'll have rain pushing through the region but there's a wintry mix that could leave a light glaze, enough to create some problems. 7:00 a.m., we see that rain and it will quickly move out of here by tomorrow afternoon we are dry. mid-to upper 40s and the winds pick up. we have

around for tomorrow afternoon. and then we get into friday and winds pick up around 30 miles per hour. windchills are in the 20s for much of the day on friday. we'll have a pretty quick cold burst that moves through our region on friday and then we get into saturday, new year's eve, back in the mid-40s by sunday to bring in 2017. temperatures are right around 50 degrees. we're going to plan out your new year's eve, a lot of people out and about on new year's eve. what you can expect coming up in about 15 minutes. >> thanks, lauryn. the numbers are still rolling in but retailers have already seen a major boost from holiday shopping season. sales growth is expected to jump almost 5% this year. that would be the biggest jump in more than a decade. experts say boosts in last-minute shopping and a solid start to the post christmas period is contributing to those numbers. one of the hottest toys of the holiday seems to be causing

fairfax county experienced an unspeakable tragedy. the day after thanksgiving, police say that their father stabbed and killed their mother. police officers felt they had to do something for this boy and his siblings. they went to several stores asking for donations. the store stepped up big-time and the officers were able to deliver water, food and presents to the family. >> i have no idea. >> you were not expecting this? >> no. i just expected toys from santa. >> we are parents and have children that way. so a lot of the guys were sympathetic towards the children here. >> officers say they were able to fill three cars up with all of the donations that they received. amazon had a good holiday season for the sale of its own

the afternoon, we'll top out around 49, maybe 50 today if we're lucky. it's going to be chilly if we continue into the evening. storm team 4 radar right now, pretty quiet. a weak high pressure is in and we have a storm that sweeps through the area. we're going to see rain in the morning and then it will be off by the afternoon. we turn pretty windy tomorrow afternoon through tomorrow evening but we get sunshine back. now, mostly rain because there is a few isolated spots north and west of d.c., loudoun county, montgomery county, frederick county, maryland, and off to the west, it could have a wintry mix. friday, blustery. not getting out of the 20s in terms of windchill. all right. as you can see tonight, we're looking good. after midnight, that's when we start to see rain. a wintry and cloudy mix. it warms up and everyone sees rain and out of here by noon
