revelers will be there. first, vladimir putin and president-elect donald trump are reacting to the obama administration's decision to punish russia for its efforts to interfear in t interfere with the u.s. presidential election. hallie jackson is standing by. >> reporter: good morning. russia has been threatening now to hit back at the u.s., and today they're explaining how they might do it, by expelling the same number of diplomats that the u.s. did, and by shutting down the same number of government compounds in russia. in other words, it's russia's reciprocal retaliation after the obama administration's new sanctions. payback for putin. from the white house, slapping sanctions on russia for trying to interfere with the u.s. election, a punishment the next president isn't saying much about. yet. "it's time for our country to move on to bigger and better

things." donald trump says in a short statement. "nevertheless," he adds, he will meet with leaders of the intelligence community next week in order to be updated on the facts of the situation. multiple senior intelligence officials tell nbc news trump and his team have been briefed since mid-august about russia's attempts to interfere with the election, adding trump himself was told of "direct links" between moscow and the dnc e-mail hack. trump has resisted publicly acknowledging that link. >> could be somebody sitting on their bed that weighs 400 pounds. okay? you don't know who broke in to dnc. >> reporter: russia now furious over the new sanctions. the punishment includes forcing 35 russian diplomats out of the u.s. by the end of the weekend, going after two suspected russian hackers wanted by the fbi, and ordering two russian compounds, one in new york, one if maryland, accused of being used for spying, shut down today. the sanctions also

recent days. they say they have visited 3,200 car and truck rental agencies asking managers to look out for anything suspicious. >> thank you very much. now a tragedy. a texas woman is dead and two daughters injured after they fell from a chair lift. officials say the three fell on thursday morning. they were taken to a nearby hospital. the woman died and one of the daughters has been released. a wild police chase in phoenix ended when police shot the suspect. officials say the pursuit began after an armed robbery at a convenience store. they say the suspect took off in a u haul truck and led police on a low speed chase. the chase ended when the suspect got out and apparently tried to carjack the vehicle in the next lane,pe
