>> reporter: while hundreds of thousands are expected for president-elect donald trump's swearing in, hotel sales got off to a slow start. >> usually the day after a candidate has been chosen, hotels normally see a large influx of reservations. that didn't happen this year because quite frankly i think everyone was taken by surprise by the outcome. >> reporter: elliot ferguson who tracks trends in d.c. says trump's upset victory is also the reason more unofficial events surrounding the inaugural haven't been announced yet. hundreds of thousands are expected for the inauguration and thousands more expected to come to washington to protest. he says the fear of violence or terror attack isn't keeping people away on either side. >> we're not getting a lot of calls saying, issa

there until the plane lands at dulles airport. today we're learning more about what happened. >> reporter: with this nasty weather, flight 6060 from charlotte was delayed today. but yesterday when it arrived at around 4:15 there were two big worries. first off, was the person who got locked in the cargo hold really a baggage handler and had he survive the hour plus flight in cargo without serious injuries? dulles rescue crews on a run this afternoon. yesterday they handled one of their most unusual calls ever when a united airlines express jet landed with someone accidentally locked inside a pressurized cargo hold. >> it's going to be an apparent baggage handler that got locked in the baggage compartment. unknown injuries at this ti

express another concern, for security. >> officer called. they want to make sure the person involved is an employee and not a stowaway. >> reporter: the flight reached an altitude of 27,000 feet before it landed in dulles an hour and 24 minutes later. we're still working to find out when someone realized there was a man in the cargo hold. they discovered the man is okay but there are still questions about whether he truly is a baggage handler. >> he's refusing medical attention. we're going to work it as a security incident until we can get some confirmation as to who he was even though he's dressed z a ramper in charlotte. >> reporter: another complication, the man is missing key identification. >> he does have a valid company

>> reporter: the man was detained while representatives from the tsa, faa and united airlines joined the investigation. it's not the first time something like this has happened in recent years. in april of 2015 a baggage handler made a frantic 911 call. that plane made an emergency landing. united airlines has not revealed whether the man had a cell phone. their statement reads once at the gate an employee of the airline's ground handling venn tor was found unharmed in the aircraft cargo hold. we are looking into what happened. the baggage handler works for g 2 sere staff. i e-mailed that company for comment on the incident but i have not yet heard back. got up this morning to go out and get the paper.

there. people in other parts of the country dealing with some rough weather as they head home from the long holiday weekend. everything from snow in the north to some severe storms in the south. nbc's sarah r. >> reporter: overnight severe storms moving through texas brought damaging winds, hail, even a tornado. a lightning strike at this houston area home burned a huge hole in the roof causing a fire. kevin was saved by a neighbor who woke him up. meantime in the not many arthwee digging out of feet of snow.

the slick surfaces and dangerous driving conditions also impacting air travel, causing delays. more of the same is expects in the upper midwest. it's all umbrellas in new orleans where torrential rain put a damper on fans headed to the sugar bowl today. thankfully the game is played inside the superdome, so no rain delays there. that system leaving a trail of damage through louisiana and mississippi. it's not what anyone needs, as many prepare to head back to work and a messy start to 2017. a virginia man who fell 10 stories down a hotel boiler shaft was apparently trying to take in the view from the hotel's roof on new year's eve. d.c. police say 23-year-old john leonard was a guest at the dupont circle hotel. he and a woman went to the roof just after ringing in the new year. police say he fell down the boiler shaft and died. investigators are calling the fall accidental. but it's

two made it onto the roof or why leonard fell into the boiler shaft. something very similar happened on new year's eve a few years ago in 2013. a maryland man was found dead in an apartment building's ventilation shaft after he'd been out celebrating. he was last seen at a bar on 18th street. he disappeared on his way home and was found two days later 50 feet down the shaft just blocks away from the entertainment district. cops were called to an area off 38th street in southeast k d.c. this afternoon. they say they found a u-haul truck with several atms in the back. nobody's been arrested so far. at this point police say they do not know if there's any money inside those atm machines, nor do they know where the machines came from. still ahead, the manhunt for terrorist behind a

isis is claiming responsibility in the deadly nightclub attack in istanbul. the group refers to the attacker as a heroic soldier. the language suggests he may have been trained by isis rather than simply inspired by them, according to terror analysts. the gunman disappeared into the chaos. turkish police have tightened security while they hunt for him. he killed 39 people and wounded dozens of others in the new year's attack. richard engel caught up with an american survivor at the hospital. >> reporter: american survivor jake raak is recovering from a gunshot wound. >> i was shot in the hip. i was probably the luckiest person in the whole thing. i do find myself very fortunate. i was with dying people. seven of us were shot. >> reporter: raak was among hundreds at the club, popular with foreign tourists and the tushish jet set crowd when a

1:00 a.m. >> somebody said there were shots fired. i initially did not believe it until i saw the gunman and he started shooting up the whole place. >> reporter: as the gunman moved from victim to victim, raak says he dove under a bench. he pretended to be dead as the terrorist stood above him. >> he was walking on the bench above my head where my head was you should beneat underneath. when he shot me i didn't move. >> reporter: raak says he struggled not to flinch so the gunan wouldn't shoot him again. a manhunt is underway in turkey to find the gunman. >> that was richard engel reporting. the state department says raak was the only u.s. citizen injured in the attack. the rampage lasted less than ten minutes. as for the gunman, police believe he made his escape in a taxi. tomorrow the sentencing phase begins for the

charleston church shooter. he's 22 years old. he's going to represent himself as federal prosecutors seek the death penalty. last month a jury found dylann roof guilty of shooting and killing nine black parishioners at the emanuel ame church in south carolina back in june of 2015. roof confessed to those murders, said he intended to spark a race war. the first family is back in the white house for the final weeks of president obama's term. the washington weather was less than welcoming just before noon today when obamas returns from their holiday break in hawaii. one major item on the president's agenda, he will deliver a farewell address in chicago next week. he told supporters he plans to express his gratitude and offer thoughts on where we all go from here. this new year brings some new worries for the local d.c. government. while the city is growing and it is financial

white house and in the congress. >> reporter: bowser met briefly with president-elect trump in new york last month, but neither has released details. ward six council men charles allen, a new member of the hot seat judiciary committee said the city has lost one big advantage. >> i think we're going to have to be on guard for this. we've had a hostile senate and congress towards the district. we've always had president obama as the backstop. we don't have that anymore. >> reporter: civic leaders say local politicians have to put aside political differences at home to withstand congress. >> they're going to have to stand strong and support the residents of the city and not let us get run over by the new administration. >> reporter: even if they stick together, it could be a tough 2017 for d.c. city leaders. >> could be tough for the former mayor too, vincent gray, speculated this is just preparation for another run

you're watching news4 at 6:00. now at 6:30 police in prince george's county are looking for three men in connection with the murder of a local rapper. >> the victim shot and killed inside his home in capitol heights last week as friends and family tell us, the victim was an accomplished musician to broke barriers. >> reporter: it's hard to make it as a rapper if you're from the d.c. area but kalil wiggins did just that in the '90s. now police are searching for his killers. ♪ also known as big lil was considered to be a rap music legend in washington, d.c. he and his rap group were signed to a major deal in the90

it was all something most unusual for d.c., known more for its go go music seen than rap music. >> they had a big tour bus. this was in the '90s so i was away at school in michigan. you know, i remember one day sitting in my dorm watching b.e.t. and the video came on. >> reporter: kalil was shot dead inside his home by three masked gunmen. the gunmen never made it inside of the house. they shot from the outside, killing kalil, who was inside of the home at the time. police are looking for suspects and a motive in this case. >> there were three masked suspects that were involved in this incident. so again, we're asking for the public's help. if they have any information, you can remain anonymous. >> reporter: his family and friends say they are reeling from his violent loss. >> his spirit was so uplifting that he will make you feel like you can conquer

l police say the 15-year-old was shot and killed by a teenaged boy. investigators say charlotte's mother heard a scuffle in the room about 2:00 this morning. when the mother walked in, police say the boy shot the mother and the daughter and then shot himself. the school says it is providing support for the students. >> the message went home to parents yesterday to tell them of the sad news but also to tell them the school system will have a team of counselors here today to support students and staff. >> the mother survived the shooting. the teenaged suspect is in critical condition now at a hospital. he has not been identified yet. now to a shooting that left a woman wounded in montgomery county. police are searching for whoever pulled the trigger. pat collins is live at the scene along lamont lane in gaithersburg. pat? >> reporter: the cops are here now. the

out what happened at that house across the street. on this holiday, on this quiet gaithersburg street, a shooting in the middle of the afternoon. for people who live on lamont lane, this is not how they planned to start the new year. >> it's surprising for sure. this neighborhood is really quiet. it's a really nice neighborhood so it's surprising. >> reporter: the victim a woman in her 20s taken by medics out the back door of her townhouse. she has a gunshot wound to the leg. they say she's expected to be okay. neighbors say this is a group house and that the victim has several roommates. the gunman, the suspect, described as a short man with a dark jacket, he is still at large. and people on lamont lane, still uneasy. >> really scary. of

killing two fbi agents on the pine ridge reservation in south dakota back in 1975. his supporters say he was framed and that he did not get a fair trial. they have asked president obama to grant him clemency. but some members of the law enforcement community say peltier is a killer and the statue is an insult. yesterday school officials said the statue would be removed but it is not clear whether it will be relocated or taken down. a close call for a state trooper. what we're learning about the police chase, the fiery crash that followed. >> reporter: her message to the community tonight on news4 at 6:00. it was a wet one today. it's going to be a wet one

a woman who lives in vienna, virginia, has been locked up. police say she rammed her sufficient into a state trooper's patrol car. these are pictures of the aftermath of that incident. police say the trooper pulled the woman over for speeding. the driver then sped away and led police on a chase with speeds clocking in at over 110 miles an hour. as the officers closed in, we're told the driver slammed into trooper hoy's patrol car and then took off again along route 1 in alexandria as her car caught fire. that's her mug shot. she's charged with reckless driving and i leading police. the trooper, we're told, suffered a minor shoulder injury. >>

a weekend schedule, meaning fewer trains. tomorrow things get back to normal as many of you return to work for the first time in the new year. trains run on a normal schedule opening at 5:00 a.m. remember, there will be no scheduled track work during rush hour. the safe track program is on hold until february as leaders decide which part of the system they'll work on next. homeowners in arlington county in virginia can now legally rent out a room or a house to short-term renters through the online company such as air bnb. homeowners can now apply and get approved for a license with some restrictions. the room or the house has to be owner occupied for at least half the year. visitors can stay for more than 30 days. county board approved the measure last month. there will be no cost for the year-long county license at first. but that will probably change this summer. residents
