worker became trapped in the belly of a plane going to dulles. and tonight, talking to news 4 about working with a president trump. news 4 at 11:00 starts now. good evening, first up tonight, holiday trips coming to a slow and frustrating crawl for thousands of airline passengers all over the country tonight. u.s. customs and border protection says a system-wide outage led to delays at several major airports. news 4's darcy spencer is live at dulles with a look at the situation there. >> reporter: definitely some bad timing there, we're told that that outage lasted for four hours. all systems are back on line now but i talked to passengers tonight. there were major delays. george sanker is waiting for exchange students to

china at dulles international airport. it was two hours and counting just to get through customs. >> we have a couple of students coming out hopefully soon and they have been there a couple of hours trying to get through the system and it has been really jammed up. >> reporter: u.s. border patrol and customs confirmed there were outages at various airports, some travellers trying to get into the country were being processed by hand. >> there was a computer glitch, they said some of the computers were down. >> reporter: what do you think about it? >> it's frustrating, but security after all. >> reporter: at miami international airport more than 30 flights were cancelled. and a couple of passengers passed out while waiting. and there are delays from atlanta. many customers are just trying to get home. >> we were in line for an hour and 38 minutes. >> reporter: a customs a

>> there were questions on his charlotte id. >> reporter: the man was detained while representatives from the tsa, faa and united airlines all joined the investigation. united confirmed late today the incident. the governor of alabama just tweeted that four people are dead in his state because of severe weather today. from the west to the south it was a treacherous day to travel. for those still trying to make it back home for the holidays, millions of people impacted by snow, ice, thunderstorms and tornadoes. thousands of flights were delayed in the south, millions on alert for even more severe weather. well, back here at home we have more rain coming our way. but first, the big morning commute. doug is standing by in the storm system with the word on that. >> and the morning commute will be very wet. lots of rain today with some

and tomorrow, joe biden will give the oath of office to 27 returning senators and seven new ones. republicans will have a 52-48 advantage in the senate. in the other chamber, the house is expected to reelect paul ryan as speaker tomorrow afternoon, and once sworn in, ryan will administer the oath to house members. the gop will hold a large majority in the house. news 4's scott mcfarland will have more coverage on the hill. and the district welcomed three new council members today during the swearing in ceremony, including vince gray, and returning to ward seven after years of fighting campaign allegations. there could be a rematch in 2018. the two took veiled swipes at each other today during the ceremony. >> too many people in our city

shot in the leg this afternoon. she is expected to be okay. now police are trying to learn who pulled the trigger, this happened on lamont lane, police only had a vague description of the gunman. neighbors tell us the victim has several roommates. back at the live desk we have learned that special operations police just raided an apartment in istanbul, but did not arrest anyone for the attack on the nightclub in new year's eve. the attacker is still on the run but police have his fingerprints and released a blurry photo of the man they're looking for. earlier today, isis claimed responsibility for the attack calling the shooter a hero, who attacked a club where quote, christians celebrate their pagan holiday. police say the suspect lobbed grenades into the crowd. one american was wounded and tells nbc

staying still and playing dead even after getting shot in the hip. at the live desk, i'm chris lawrence. a south carolina judge ruled today that dylann roof is competent to serve as own attorney in the penalty phase of his trial starting on wednesday. the judge issued the ruling after a forensic psychiatrist deemed roof mentally fit. the judge ruled he cannot approach witnesses during the hearing in court. a judge found that roof was guilty of 33 charges of the massacre of black parishioners. the same jury will determine if roof gets life in prison or the death penalty. and coming up, face time, the victim's family now suing apple. what they say the company could have done to stop the crash. plus going door-to-door in d.c., a community leader

a lawsuit tonight. this could affect all sorts of apps, parents contend a driver was distracted when using apple's face time when he hit their car and killed the couple's 5-year-old daughter. the case is still pending, but now two years after the crash the family of the 5-year-old filed a lawsuit saying apple could disable the app while users are traveling at higher speeds. >> reporter: it may be a policy question on whether companies could do more to stop the misuse of their product. but judges don't necessarily want that decision made in a courtroom. >> reporter: tonight, apple says only they don't comment on pending litigation. and spacex now identified the cause of a failure, a liquid tank destroyed a $200 million satellite and severely
