and we are following breaking news. d.c. police say a man rammed into several parked cars along the route you see here. >> justin, what's going on? >> good morning. police want to be very careful here. they say this driver of this mercedes suv was not under pursuit. they say police themselves noticed this car driving erratically on the 1700 block of eight street about 1:00 or so this morning. that is where the video show show you several parked cars were struck. a prince gornlgs detail was struck responding to this scene. reports that a d.c. police marked vehicle may have been struck in all of this, as well. this all ends over here at the corner of 17th and benning road northeast here.

thank you, tom. tomorrow, the south carolina shooter he dylann roof will try to convince a jury that he should not be put to death. yesterday, a judge ruled that roof is competent to serve as his own attorney. the penalty phase will begin tomorrow. last month, the same jury convicted roof on 33 chargeser for the 2015 massacre that left nine people dead. the jury will decide between life in prison or the death penalty. a queen ann county deputy is improving after a shooting last week. he was involved in a call of a domestic dispute. he is now able to stand up with help and he is scheduled for another surgery this week. 6:13 our time right now. a

adam is live now with a look at metro's newest crime stats. good morning. >> good morning and happy new year to you. this has been a problem all across the metro system. people who simply don't pay to enter the metro rail system. that is a big problem. a lot of people will jump over the fair gates .some will go through the swing gates without paying and that's something that results in millions of dollars lost every year for metro. but a new enforcement effort could be working. acoring to metro's most recent statistics, they've had over 6100 violations written for fair evasion up to the convenient statistics. compared to the same time a year previous, there were 400 hie citations written for fair evasion. that's about a 40% increase in the number of fair evasion

marksville. the storm left severe damage behind. thousands of people still don't have power. some lost their roofs to their homes. others had their cars overturned. the weather caused a tragedy in alabama. four people died in a tornado when a tree fell on their mobile home. >> multiple others were hurt. nbc's mike seidel is in alabama to show us where the damage happened. >> good morning. we're about four hours south of atlanta, just south of rehobo the h, alabama. storms swept from texas into the deep south. at least 12 reported tornados. there was a tornado waf out four hours before, but the tornado warning was issued after the storm hit. there were seven folks in the mobile home. four now deceased. a big oak tree, they had to come in and cut that in half to get it off the mobile home. you can see it sliced right through the bathroom.

fair evasion is something that happens all across the system and the latest numbers are point to go a good crackdown for metro. this is how the statistics breakdown. the most recent stats show over 6100 citations written for fare evasion. according to the same time a year previous, that was about 4300 so it's a different of 1800 year over year, which means that metro is stepping up its efforts. a 40% increase. for a transit agency that's trying to get every single penny it can get to maintain the system, that is certainly good news and a lot of people have been asking me this morning, why doesn't the station manager just step in and do something when someone is skipping out on their fare? the station manager is not supposed to step in. transit police, snet, will step in. back to you. >> adam, thanks.
