alabama. >> reporter: 12 tornados striking the deep south yesterday. this took out the huge oak tree. you can see where the mobile home was just crushed and split in two. there were seven residents in the mobile home. four were found dead this morning in the bathroom. this morning tragedy in the town of rehobeth, alabama. officials say four people were killed when a reported tornado struck. sending a tree and power lines crashing through their mobile home. seven people were huddled inside seeking shelter at the time. damage in the area is extensive. that same series of storms leaving a trail of destruction from texas to florida. in louisiana, strong winds. >> it's like a hurricanenado. >> reporter: buildings blown apart. this semi truck overturned. in mississippi, a tornado reducing this structure to rubble. flash floods stranding motorists. the driver of this car

water. in houston, a close call for the family that lives in this home. struck by lightning. >> you can tell it was bad very quickly. >> reporter: everyone made it out safely. >> we have a lot of power lines down. we got trees down. >> reporter: in alabama, the city of jackson hit hard. >> you okay? you all right, buddy? >> reporter: from lions to lee murs at the zoo they were cleaning up. >> we can account for all of our animals. a lot of them are under a lot of stress. >> reporter: that's how folks feel this morning in the deep south. waking up and assessing damage following yesterday. it's fairly rare to see tornados in january anywhere in the u.s., especially here in houston county. they've had three reported tornados since 1950. these are the first fatalities from twisters in over 60 years. >> mike seidel, thank you very much. al roker is back in new york with more on those storms. nice

strong storms are firing up pushing through northern california and the mid atlantic states. that moisture is pushing up to the north. we won't be looking at weather that is quite as severe as we saw yesterday, there are going to be big airport delays for this first workday back into the new year as the rain moves northeast. we'll have snow showers finishing things up. we look for about anywhere from an inch to inch and a half of rain from columbus to boston. the other big problem is going to be a lot of fog, airport delays along the i-95 corridor. so people have to pack their patience traveling on the roads and in the air today. >> you talk about airport delays. a story had nothing to do with weather, for a change. to the major chaos at airports nationwide. after a customs computer out age. thousands of travelers were stranded for hours. nbc's kerry sanders is at the airport in miami with the latest. good morning to you, kerry. >> reporter: good morning. the comput

we've seen a few passengers trickling out on a flight that arrived from brazil. about 8,000 passengers at miami and many thousands more across the country faced quite a delay because of downed computers. imagine you're a passenger and it's your travel day from hell. you're in a foreign country and you have to get on a plane and get to the airport two hours early and get on the plane eight, nine, ten hour flight from rome. then you land after getting off that cramped plane and wait in line for up to four hours with nowhere to sit except maybe your luggage. all the while waiting for the customs computers to come back online. overnight a holiday headache for passengers during one of the busiest travel days of the year. a four-hour computer outage at the u.s. customs and border protection system left thousands of travelers stuck in long lines. causing chaos at airports across the country. here in miami, passengers on more than 30 international

waited to get their passports processed. >> i got off the plane and had no information whatsoever. i was trying to get through customs. it was a sea. hundreds of people there. >> reporter: another passenger posting to social media "i see the light! two hours later in customs line. all systems have been down." in atlanta travelers were not amused either. comparing the long lines to theme parks. >> it's still going. this has to be at least 5,000 people right now. this is worse than a disney land. >> reporter: in boston, the broken customs machines breaking the spirits of weary travelers. >> it was a mess in there. i'm ready to go home. >> reporter: in los angeles, one traveler trying to take the out age in stride. >> it's part of traveling, i guess, these days. you never know what you're going to get. >> reporter: u.s. customs and border protection released a statement saying the computers were not hacked. instead calling it a temporary out age with its

systems. global entry, which is a lot like tsa was pre was no benefit to passengers. those who thought they might be able to get around the problem were waiting in line. the question this morning is why customs didn't have a redoesn't dant system to back up. that's part of the ongoing investigation. >> kerry sanders, thank you. we have breaking news now on that tragic nightclub attack in turkey. police carrying out new raids overnight as they search for a suspect. nbc's chief correspondent richard engel is in istanbul. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, katie. turkish police have arrested 14 people in those raids in operations carried o istanbul and in the city of konya. they have the attacker's fingerprints. the alleged terrorist who gunned down

year's eve fills this selfie video days before the attack. the video is being broadcast around the clock on local television today in hopes that someone will find him. after killing 39 people in the club, most of them tourists from the middle east, he ditched his coat and dropped his guns. police confirmed that's him seen on cc tv. just after the attack near the club getting out of a cab. turkish media report the cab bee threw him out because without his jacket he didn't center any money on him. he walks away and isn't seen again. isis has claimed responsibility for the attack. turkey launched a military attack in response striking the government, the government announced, around a hundred isis targets inside syria on sunday. as police raided homes last night, the most wanted man in turkey remains at large.

office that was set up to oversee and police corruption and scandal in congress. they script its independence and put it under the control of congress, the very group they're supposed to police. donald trump ran a campaign saying i'm going to drain the swamp in washington. doesn't it do the opposite? how does he feel about it? >> it does not, want. i don't want your viewers to be left with the impression there's no mechanism to investigate what i would call constituent complaints. there's a new office. and the new office will cut down on the overzealousness. >> is that office completely independent of congress? >> the office could be. >> it's not now. >> they're going to vote on it today. it was a particular committee voting by secret ballot, but the full congress will have an opportunity to speak out on it and vote today. >> has donald trump weighed in? >> he's not at the moment. i'm sure when he feels the urge to weigh in on something he does. let me make clear, if a

they can still lodge that complaint. they can't do it anonymously. and many of these people, members and their staffers who have been under investigation have complained about their due process rights being violated and comprised. they need protections, as well. >> let's talk about obamacare. because number one, up for the new congress is to repeal obamacare. is the republican congress, kellyanne, willing to take ownership of the issue? have they come up with something to replace obamacare? >> yes, and yes, katie. one of the big priorities for president-elect trump and his republican congress would be to make it easier for americans to purchase health care across state lines. the way you would buy auto insurance, for example. currently you can't do that. we also were talking about a more patient-centric free market system. you have patient savings account. you can control your health care spending for you and your family. this impacts women who are the chief health care officers of

affordable care act that donald trump praised. allowing kids to stay on their parents health care plan until they're 26. is he committed to maintaining those parts of the law? how will he do it without the individual mandate to pay for them? >> he's committed to retaining those that his advisors said are working. he'll be talking to his hhs does knee tom price about it. it's an issue where the president-elect has issued a great deal of counsel. i was in palm beach last week it was in public he met with the top health care experts in the country. the heads of the mayo clinic and bring ham and young. he's getting -- >> is he still committed? >> he is committed to repealing and replacing obamacare so it's more fair. we hear about this issue more than anything else, this and veteran's care. they say i thought

to get better coverage but i've been cut my hours were cut down to 25 to not get the coverage from employers now i have two jobs and no coverage. people thought they had coverage now they feel like their premiums have increased and quality is less. >> when is he going to have a press conference? he promised one in december to talk about conflict of interest with his business. last one was 159 days ago. he urged russian hackers to look for hillary clinton's e-mails. when will he hold a press conference and when will he divulge he says he knows what others don't know? >> he'll have a briefing by our top intelligence officials early this week here in new york. at which time he'll perhaps learn more about what they say. we're tired of the insinuations and people leaking to the press rather than dealing with what may or may not have happened. >> will he tell the intelligence officials what he

>> i think every president and president-elect ought to know things that others don't. >> if michael flynn is picked to be national security advisor. he has close ties with vladimir putin. this shows him at a dinner with vladimir putin. is that where he's getting the information? >> he's getting information from a number of sources. he receives daily briefings but in addition to that he receives intelligence briefings from many sources. i would push back on the idea that someone sitting at a dinner with someone else is close ties in and a coziness nancy pelosi -- rex tillerson has done business in 50 countries or so. and somebody who understands how to negotiate and say no to some of the leaders when necessary. >> kellyanne conway, thank you. happy new year. >> happy new year.
