intelligence community and the auto industry. nbc's kristen welker is at trumpatory witrump tower. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. president elect donald trump has been at odds with the intelligence communities for weeks, but now his latest tweet may be inflaming the situation even more. and that is just one of the many twitter battles he's picked this week. president elect donald trump may be opening up an even larger rift with the intelligence agencies he's about to lead. tweeting overnight the intelligence briefing on so-called russian hacking was delayed until friday. perhaps more time need today build a case. very strange. an intelligence official tells nbc news the meeting was always scheduled for friday and called trump's tweet disturbing. the president elect repeatedly questioning intelligence assessments that russia meddled in the election. and he may have gotten an

senate, soon to be the white house. instead of a victory lap yesterday -- >> #fail. >> they're forced to reverse course on the ethics office. it's a big fumble. who is to blame? >> it's a stumble, not a fumble. they can move on if they learn the lesson. they have to understand the biggest message of the election people don't want business as usual in washington. they don't want politicians getting special treatment. the decisions they made the change the rule was absurd. it was reversed because of constituents and donald trump teaming up to say no way. if they learn the lessons there won't be any calls. >> paul ryan didn't like the call but house members said yeah, yeah, yeah, thanks. when donald trump said he didn't like it and basically everything changed. is this a sign of things to come of the dynamics between paul ryan and president elect trump? is he going to be saying congress jump and they'll be asking how high? >> nothing gets everyone's attention w

election they all thought you were going to lose. think back to the dynamic last year. paul ryan was communicating in every way possible he thought donald trump was a sure loser. all his political instincts told him that. there he is telling house republicans my political instincts are telling me this is a bad thing to do. donald trump comes out a few hours later, his political instincts were validated in the grandest way possible in this election. he ussays my instincts this is d politics. they'll listen to him, at least for a little while. >> obamacare, of course is front and center today, president obama going to capitol hill. does he have anything to gain by doing this in a repu controlled congress? is this a pr move? is he speaking to the american people? >> this is a debate the public will have. a lot of you have healthcare now because of this law -- >> 20 million people. >> keep it in place. the republicans will

years and every election we've run against this law we can do a better job. the debate today on capitol hill will get a lot of attention. it will play out over months as both sides try to make the argument. do you want the current law or something different. republicans are obligated to do something different -- >> it's going to take, forever right? >> they own the issue now. let's talk about the donald trump and the intelligence community. he tweets last night the intelligence briefing on so-called russian hacking was delayed until friday perhaps more time needed to build a case. very strange. you don't have to read between the lines. he's saying the intelligence briefers are cooking the books, they're part of a conspiracy. what is possibly to gain by this 16 days before you take the oath of office? >> i think it's two things. this is donald trump. he sees the coverage and persistence of the story. he sees it as his opponents and the media trying to

really win the election. in terms of what he's tapping into and why politically he's getting away. his campaign capitalized on not trusting major institutions. >> when he says these things like i know more about anything else or i know more about isis and the generals -- >> this or that -- >> does he understand how much scrutiny every word he says is going to receive once he takes -- >> or the impact. >> he's never in his time on the national stage as a politician. never paid a real price for it because he won the white house. when he's president of the united states and makes these types of claims, i think there will be a different standard. i think he'll have to learn a different lesson. he came make claims at president of the united states that don't hold up. >> maybe he'll step away from the twitter. >> oh, no he won't do that but he might think twice before he hits sends. >> good to see you.

attack at an istanbul night club. officials in turkey have now identified the gunman who killed 39 people during a new year's celebration. he has not been publicly named and is still at large. meantime, police have detained five alleged isis members in connection with that attack. isis has claimed responsibility for the shooting. which also wounded nearly 70 people. here at home a north carolina officer is on administrative leave today after video shows him slamming a femafif female high school student to the ground. >> good morning, katie, that video of a school resource officer body slamming a 15-year-old is the talk of the town especially here at this high school. this morning the girl's mother says she plans to do everything she can to have charges brought against the officer as well as school officers.

this morning 15-year-old jasmine darwin, the high school student being slammed to the ground by a resource officer on the video is speaking out is. >> when i watch the video, i get really angry. like you did not have to slam me like that. you could have pulled me away. >> reporter: darwin was takebn o the hospital. her mother says she suffered a concussion a bruised wrist and other injuries. >> i am upset, angry. he could have killed my daughter. >> reporter: but the nine second cell phone video does not tell the full story. jasmine says the incident started when she saw her older sister fighting and tried to break it up. this video allegedly shows that fight. the officer involved has been at the school for four years. he could not be reached for comment but is now on paid administrative leave. which is department policy. social media exploded when the video was released. this is vile, this is not

body slam a girl, a third your size. so many people have no concept of the challenges working in public schools. similar incidents have gone viral. this confrontation between a school resource officer and a student in south carolina a year ago. that officer was fired, but no charges against him. and in texas this 12-year-old slammed by an officer. he was fired. the principal sent an audio message to parents. >> i am deeply concerned about what i saw in the video. the safety of our students has always been a top priority. >> reporter: the police chief is asking the community for patience. >> we will work diligently to review any and all pertinent information so we can provide an accurate account of the event. >> reporter: harrison isn't sending either of her daughters back to the school. >> the school is supposed to protect children when they to

my child was not protected. >> reporter: jasmine's mother says her daughter is now scheduled to see a neurologist later today. matt, katie? >> thank you. sentencing begins today in charleston, south carolina for dylann roof, the 22-year-old convicted of killing nine people at a church there. the same jury that found roof guilty will decide whether he'll get the death penalty or life in prison. roof is representing himself. he said he plans to call no witnesses or introduce any evidence. seven crew members were hospitalized tuesday after complaining about toxic fumes on an american airlines flight from charlotte to orlando. they say they developed headaches. the airline inspected the plane but did not find the source. >> mr. roque

this morning, their mom is speaking out. nbc's national correspondent miguel almanguer has more on that story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, at first parents were apprehensive about releasing the video, especially for them, it is so difficult to watch. but they hope other parents take away a valuable lesson. one that could save a life. they were doing what toddlers do, the twins climbing a bedroom dresser when it comes crashing down. little brock pinned beneath the heavy furniture. his brother hearing the cry for help, but their parents, who say they were upstairs had no idea what it just happened. >> we did have a really close call. >> reporter: trapped for nearly two minutes bode tries to lift the 155 pound dresser off his brother, managing to push it off his tiny brother. brock, shaken but incredibly not seriously hurt. >> that was crazy. we are lucky. >> reporter: their mother says th

rewind to the first cooking segment i did on "the today show" back on july 2nd, 1990. yikes. take a look. >> i enjoyed watching cooking show and julia child was a great influence and inspired me to go on and do it later on in life. >> you don't try to talk like her. >> no, at all. >> no, you don't. >> cheddar soup is something we do. and to take a soup which is -- looks -- you might think it's heavy like a chowder and make it a light dish. >> this is better than velveeta? >> we don't want to get into that. >> i like velveeta. more than 26 years later, one of my favorite people is back with an updated recipe. he's the chef and owner of porterhouse bar and grill here in new york city. >> how are you? >> nice to see you. >> all right, listen i'm excited to cook with you today. because that was 26 years ago now you have a version of the recipe, but it's much lighter and healthier, correct? a little bit? >> yes. to all

natural. you know, just great fresh ingredients. that's the most important thing. we learned that counting calories is important. but whole natural ingredients are the best thing. the corn chowder really begins with corn. and you may not find fresh ears of corn, but you can use frozen ears of corn. the reason why i like the whole corn is because the corn -- we're going to grill them in a grill pan. >> so you don't have to steam them or do anything, grill them on that pan and they'll be cooked enough? >> they're going into the chowder at the end so they'll cook some more. use a broiler, broil these. just to get the char, the flavor, the nice smoky flavor. the thing about the corn is that the cob, the cob is important to -- just cutting the corn, the grilled corn off the cob. the cob itself adds great flavor. and also adds a creaminess to the dish. so we just love our corn chowder anytime of year. >> i love

of course a healthy dose of bacon which is good for any healthy dish. i love bacon so much. it's an addiction i have a problem. >> there's so many great bakens. >> i know, that bacon anonymous? >> the bacon adds great flavor. i'm taking out and i'm going to put in some onion and celery, and a little bit of butter to go in here. you know, even joy bauer would say the fats are healthy in moderation. >> they've gotten a bad name, but studies have shown they leave you much more satisfied and you're not hungry between meals if you do indulge and have a little bit of fat here and there. >> this is a dish that's a meal in itself. here we have our vegetables that are wilted, our celery and onion, i'll add cumin and coriander to that which is great

we're going to add some chicken broth. >> i want to go down stairs because everybody's tasting some of this corn chowder that you made. what do you guys think? >> we were just saying it's been so long since someone in a cooking segment said studies show. >> okay, but it's true. >> really good. >> is it good? is it tasty you guys? >> really good. >> you taste the smokiness of the corn? al you're a big bacon person. al gave me bacon of the month one christmas. it was my favorite present i have ever gotten in life. >> take the corncobs out. and we're going to put those -- we can discard them. >> al gave me one of those, too. one of those food musher thingies. >> an immersion blender. >> of course. >> i couldn't live without it. that way you don't have to transfer hot soup to a blender.

you start it. we're going to add our corn and cheese. cheese goes in which is cheddar cheese. aged cheddar. and the bacon and let that cook for another five or six minutes and some cream. if you don't want the cream, use yogurt. this is enough for eight people. >> also this is a meal. real quickly, i know we don't have much time. you like to serve it with waldorf salad. i think of it as being mayonnaise laden. >> you could make your own mayonnai mayonnaise, if you wanted to use yogurt instead you could do that. >> apple grapes, lemon juice, pecans or walnuts. >> exactly. we need to -- we can combine this to make our dressing. >> i'm going to let you work on that. i'm going to ask the folks down stairs did you try the salad as well? >> loving. >> really

9:57 is your time now on this wednesday january 4th, 2017. good morning i'm eun yang. the lights are back on at the washington monument after it went dark tuesday night. a spokesman for the national park service says the lights were back on when electricians arrived this morning. looks like the automated program that controls the iconic monument's lights are out of sync. the lights are expected to be on wednesday evening as usual.
