pierced the bottom of the train and the wheels wound upcoming up. several windows and doors were shattered. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. we'll have new reaction coming up in the next half hour for you. today metro announced its biggest system closure so far and of all times it's happening over super bowl weekend. no trains will run between foggy bottom and eastern market the first weekend in february. crews will be work on the track fixing ceiling tile. but metro will offer shuttle buses to help offset the inconvenience. the announcement comes on the heels of the fancy new ad maybe you've seen it, it promises that the agency is working to earn back your trust with the slow gap getting back to good. transportation reporter adam tuss confirmed the ad cost metro $400,000. but i just retweeted his reporting that that money only represents 0.02% of the agency's overall operating

session. one that starts next week. as soon as it was published on the website, we started to hear from some of you, questions, concerns about what exactly it entails. i want to share some of what we've dug up as to what it's supposed to imply. it says no individual shall go into a facility designated for use by members of the opposite sex. but it goes further and here is the point that has some concerns mainly for those involved with schools. it says that a principal within 24 hours needs to notify a parent or guardian if their child chooses to identify as a member of the opposite sex or chooses to come out as transgender so to speak. we wanted to matter from the person who authored this bill and that was delegate bob marshall, republican here in prince william county. he agreed to talk to us about what his intention to introducing this is. >> let's figure you're a woman going down 95 at 8:00 at night and you want to stop

we're following breaking news in prince george's county, chopper 4 is in ft. washington on the scene of a big fire at the tucker road ice rink. >> look at how far the plumes are traveling. this is near the henson creek golf course. we don't know if there are any injuries. firefighters say they are attacking the fire from the outside. we will keep you updated as we learn more information on this. we're also following some news out of south carolina, the sentencing phase in the trial of convicted church shooter dylann roof is under way in charleston. >> and with roof representing himself because he says he doesn't want lawyers using mental illness as

more from chris clackum. >> reporter: mumbling but defending himself, dylann roof declared in a brief opening statement that he did not want his former attorneys introducing mental health evidence because as he put it, there is nothing wrong with me psychologically. it was the first time roof ever addressed the jury directly. the same jury who convicted him last month of murder and hate crimes for the june 2015 church shooting in charleston that left nine parishioners dead. in his opening, prosecutor nathan williams said this defendant's horrific acts justify the death penalty. victims' family members were called to talk about the life and loss of loved ones, starting with jennifer pinckney, widow of the reverend pinckney who spoke of a loving pastor and father of their two daughters, but turned to the terror of that night

daughters were upstairs inside the church when the shooting began. pinckney testified i heard pop, pop, pop, it hit me then it was gunshots. and immediately worried her husband was a victim. prosecutors may call as many as two dozen others like pinckney over the next two weeks before letting the jury finally decide whether roof should die for what he did. chris clackum, nbc news. it's a terrifying scheme and it's happened again. a man said that he was in sterling when he got a call yesterday afternoon, a young woman saying that she he had been kidnapped. and then police say a man came on the phone demanding a ran system f some for the man's daughter. the man hung up because he does not have a daughter. last year our iteam reported this is an emerging trend known as virtual kidnapping. fbi records show the feds have investigated more than 60 virtual kidnapping

nationwide since 2014, including a case in frederick, maryland where crooks pretended to kidnap a man's wife and he wired the money but managed to cancel the transaction after realizing that it was in fact a scam. fbi agents warn that virtual kidnappers often try to keep would-be victims on the phone as long as possible to prevent those victims from realizing that they have been ripped off. cleanup is still under way after the deadly storm in albany, georgia. authorities confirm a sixth death, a 73-year-old woman who died from smoke inhalation. officials believe the victim was using a candle during the power outage which caused the fire. monday night's storm caused severe damage throughout albany, about 1,000 homes have been damaged, power line, street signs and trees all still down. i got to tell you, if we had to endure two cold rainy days to get today, it was worth it. >> but that is short

things. first off, a lot of lake-effect snow, a couple of feet around the buffalo area. that is one storm. that will help to bring in the cold air for us. and the next one way off toward the west, we're talking california and parts of the colorado rockies. believe it or not, the next few days, they could see 4 to 6 feet of snow after they have already seen four feet, dhthey could ge another 4 to 6 feet. that storm system is going to eventually move or way and that is the saturday storm we keep talking about. right now, we're tracking the cold. 53 d.c., 28 columbus, ohio. 18 in chicago. 4 in minneapolis. we will be seeing very cold air and this is the longest stretch of cold weather that we've seen. cold enough that when our next storm system development develops tomorrow night into friday, it will be spoke. so tomorrow just cloud cover around the region being but already show showers in parts of the region tomorrow afternoon and a few more tomorrow evening. but after about 8:00, the snow

area. and just about everybody sees that snowfall. but watch tomorrow as the storm develops off the coast, it moves to the north of the city. so the city not nearly as much. and i think that will be the case and by 8:00, it is out of here. so hoof alf an inch or less i-9 south and east. north and west, maybe half inch to an inch. so that is the areas with the l biggest impact. could be some delays early friday morning, so we'll watch it. but temperature-wise we will be in the 30s. my ten day forecast didn't work, so let me try it one more time. so take a look at the numbers next couple of days. they will be quite frigid as we move on through the weekend. temperatures only in the 20s and low 30s saturday and sunday. high on sunday only 29. amelia draper will have more on this. it has become apo

subjected to in hollywood years ago. now because they weren't able to give any other voice. so folks are scratching their head on his claim of reverse racism because they say maybe the criticism is unfair. but, you know, white actors are not excluded from hollywood. so it's very interesting. as we've been saying, the reactions to perry's comments all over the place. lisa tells me that she disagrees with tyler perry on this one. she feels he's actually back handing the very audience that has been supporting the projects that he's been making for tv and the silver screen. >> tyler perry does have the right of creative express as an artist being that he started his career supporting the african-american community through the arts, theater and film to now change lanes and to expect that there would not be some sort of backlash is silly. and he's smarter than that.

what started as a fender-bender escalated quickly in montgomery county. >> two drivers both saying they feared for their lives. one ended up unconscienkoconscce other on trial. meagan fitzgerald has the story from chevy chase. >> reporter: 28-year-old brandon reynolds is on trial for beating up a man on the side of the beltway. prosecutors are calling it a road rage incident, but in court reynolds argue that had it was just self-defense. the incident happened in june on eastbound i-495 near connecticut avenue. montgomery county police say they arrived on scene and found the victim lying

riders on this commuter train are describing a frightening scene. the train derailed this morning just as it came into a station and a piece of metal pierced a rail car. >> authorities agree this could have been a lot worse. marc santia has the latest developments. >> reporter: a wild morning commute for hundreds of passengers here at the lirr atlantic terminal in brooklyn as the train was coming in, passengers tell me they heard a loud bang, then they were thrown into the aisle. >> it was just like a boom! i can't even explain it. >> everything flew. bodies, phones. and it was a loud bang. >> reporter: people were injured and there was as they described it controlled chaos. >> people were primarily shocked just wondering what
