as the storm makes its way. we have an advisory that has been shifted off to the north and west, including portions of montgomery county. these counties have been introduced into the winter weather advisory. the storm itself is going to be further to the west. down to the south and east that's where we have those winter storm warnings. on the radar now you don't see anything, but all you have to do is widen out a bit. notice where the snow is. a lot of moisture with this. here is the snow in towards southern maryland. starting time, by 4:00 a.m. in the city accumulation by sunrise ending 1:00 and turning cold. by 2:00 a.m. it's going to be starting down towards southern maryland. this is a completely different system

>> reporter: to comment on what you said a sheriff's deputy told us they had a little snow yesterday and then it stopped and right now they plan to be out tomorrow morning to help people who may need assistance due to the two to four inches you mentioned. officials warn people to be careful if you have to go out tomorrow. we're here on berry road about half a mile from where the road meets up with 301 and the primary roads have been treated. the national weather service issued the weather advisory for charles county starting at 3:00 early saturday morning to 3:00 in the afternoon. officials are asking people to again minimize driving during that time. two to four inches of snow is expected to fall by itself or in combination with sleet and freezing rain. it could ca

police say opened fire in the baggage claim at one of our country's busiest airports. >> when the rampage was over, five people were dead, eight wounded and the gunman was in custody. we are at ft. lauderdale hollywood internationally now with the story. >> reporter: late friday planes stuck on runways for hours began unloading passengers as hundreds forced to evacuate earlier made their way back with stories. >> there was a pop, pop, pop, pop, and then a herd of people started running down the way and trampling over people. >> reporter: the chaos and panic began after 1:00 p.m. >> people started running this way and that way. >> reporter: authorities the 26-year-old man opened fire in the baggage claim area of terminal two. witnesses say the gunman never spoke and was able to reload his hand gun at least

until he was out of ammunition. >> once he finished shooting he threw his gun on the ground and lay on the ground until the first officer came. >> reporter: an eyewitness says this was the gunman and he was taken into custody. >> the subject was interviewed intensively by a team of fbi agents and broward sheriff's deputies. >> reporter: he is a former member of the national guard serving in iraq for ten months. family members say he was undergoing treatment for mental health issues. he flew on a delta flight to ft. lauderdale. his weapon in his checked baggage. witnesses say he retrieved his lug gaj and loaded the gun and began shooting. operations at ft. lauderdale airport remain shut down. the fbi has now filed criminal charges against the suspect for interfering with ora

an international airport. as far as criminal charges for those killed and wounded, those are to come. his first court appearance is set for monday. reporting in ft. lauderdale, nbc news. our team coverage continues here at the the live desk where airports around the country are stepping up security including those in our area. here is a look at the security in place at reagan national where boards are alerting passengers that flights to ft. lauderdale are cancelled. they asked passengers to be extra vigilant. officials say they will have a heightened level of security. last year a bombing in brussels ignited calls to extend security to public areas. right now security protocols are focused on protecting aircraft and large parts of most airports are open to

this neighbor says many considered the father's behavior somewhat unusual. >> he didn't want to socialize with us. if his children tried to play with a friend, the other one would tell on them for playing. he was controlling. >> reporter: police were called to the home just off little river turnpike about 3:25 this afternoon. video from chopper 4 shows the crime scene and scenes to the right of the screen at the rear of the home what appears to be boxes used in bee keeping. a neighbor we spoke to once invited them to watch a story that aired in 2007. it showed him in protective gear helping to remove bees that had clustered on a fire hydrant and boxed them up to take them to a rural area. investigators are expected to remain on this

street until well in the early morning hours. we have learned that the truck driver who was killed yesterday is the single father of five chair. police say he lost control of the truck he was driving. it was a trash truck. they were trying to figure out what went wrong. the road conditions were not the problem. chin is survived by his daughter and four sons. his brother will take care of his children. loved ones are raising money for the kids. they've raised more than $24,000. in two weeks donald trump will be sworn in as the 45th president of the united stes and tonight we're getting a glimpse at the news that trump was skeptical of. russia did meddle in the election intending to hurt hillary clinton and help him win. that's according to officials and at today's briefing trump issued a statement saying the hacking had absolutely no effect on the outcome of the election.

were searching for a band it. this man walked into a rock store, picked up a fossil and stuffed it down his pants. it was part of a marine animal that disappeared along with the dinosaurs. that fossil is worth several thousand dollars. a crime caught on camera. crooks smash into a gas station and steal the atm. police say after they left the scene they repeated the crime at another gas station a few miles away. at least six stations have been hit like this over the last two weeks. the police think the cases could be connected. developing tonight, folks in our region among the 73 million from the gulf coast to the northeast under winter advisories, warnings and watches. >> storm team 4 tells this is a potentially historic winter storm. >> reporter:

have to go very far down to the south moving into the richmond area and into southern maryland and back to parts of blue ridge. here's the main storm. the upper level low is back towards memphis. it's picking up this moisture and the surface low will go along the coast here. that's why we have winter storm warnings from alabama, charlotte into portions of richmond an most of the del mar vau. a blizzard warning in the rest of the purple is a winter weather advisory through the d.c. metro area. let's take you hour-by-hour here. right now nothing in our region, but by 2:00 we'll see it down to the south and by 4:00 it's encroaching on the washington, d.c. metro area. by 5:00, notice the shift here. it was moving up to the west, but notice the shift. that's the storm taking form out to the atlantic. it's around

are at 10:00 in the morning from d.c. south and eastward, the lighter snow to the west. it gets out of here by 5:00 and everybody starts to clear out and it gets cold. first off snowfall amounts. let's show you what's happening. flurries possible to the north. big area down to the south. i'm going three to six inches or more down around leonardtown. that's where you could see things. around waldorf. i have most of d.c. one to three and i've added parts of fairfax, prince william over towards culpepp culpepper. most of montgomery county now under that winter weather advisory. just flurries possible, maybe a quick snowshower, but i'm not expec

an iceberg the size of delaware is getting ready to break away in an art kau and this could lead to the collapse of an ice shift. a crack in that ice shift suddenly grew by 11 miles in december alone and now that iceberg is only attached by a thin thread of ice about 12 miles long. scientists have been keeping an eye on the crack for decades and say part of the break is natural, but they say there could be a link to climate change. we've been seeing a lot of this with the icebergs. >> as warmer air temperatures and warmer ocean temperatures. this is actually a floating iceberg on the ocean. if it moves off it does not create the sea level, but it allows the land ice to move on to the sea and that would increase the le
